We left school and did our CSEs in 1984 - note no O Levels/A Levels or 6th Form - dear Mumsnetters

We came of age in 1986 - Hand of God - Mexico World Cup etc etc

Harold Wilson was PM when we were born

only CFs would call us ‘nearly’ ‘60’

Er, that person is 57, so of course they're nearly 60!
And I'm 59, so I really don't see what the problem is.

Jabberwok · 27/04/2025 09:33

EvidentClyburn · 25/04/2025 18:32

i went to to a school where vast majority did CSEs - doing O levels was practically unknown!

That's really interesting, I was born the end of 68 so a school year behind. We did o levels, I went on to do a levels, but I am increasing bitter that the teachers never pushed for kids to go to uni. Only one of my school year did. That's one out of 242 kids so less than 0.5%. I don't mean me here, I was too immature, to lazy to leave home at 18. But I have several friends who went later or never went who's lives would have been so much better AND in my view so.much better for the economy of this country.

Doesn’t feel like 40 years

Facts don't care about feelings?

Gingernan · 27/04/2025 10:20

just nitpicking, grade C 'O' level wasn't low so a grade A cse was pretty good. I got decent job in the Inland Revenue in 1965 with 5 reasonable O levels.
(I wish I'd enjoyed it and stayed as I would have retired years ago with a proper pension)

Blimey, that means because I was born in 58, I'm nearly 70

I tell DP this regularly lol

Earlier (I was born 1962) it depended on the school you went to- I went to an early comprehensive and was thought to be a pupil who would do a couple of O levels and about 5 or 6 CSEs. My family moved to a more traditional part of the UK I went to a girl's grammar school- I went on to do 12 O levels 3 A levels and S levels- we were all expected to go to university, or very rarely art school or a conservatoire. About 10% went to Oxford or Cambridge- it's entirely down to expectations, from day one we were expected to achieve top academic results.

It’s good to do well academically - I genuinely loved history

In our school we were only expected to wear suits when we attended the local Magistrates’ Court ! -,To be fair a couple did go to uni so this must’ve done A levels - but they scrapped 6 form the year after my year left

We’re 3 years off 60

thats the definition of nearly, sadly!

on the plus point… you got 3 years to plan a kick arse party.. so get on with it 😆

To pass you had to get at least a C. Anything below was a fail.

I mean it’s not rude as you are nearly 60. 57/58 is closer to 60 than 50 .

If you were born in 68 then you can't be 58, you are 56 or 57

I’m only a year younger than you OP, but O Levels/A Levels ,and Sixth Form were definitely around then, I did them all - are you in the UK?

Ok so my maths isn’t great at one year off. Point is it’s still closer to 60 then 50

EvidentClyburn · 27/04/2025 19:41

Yes in the UK

I’m Jan 68.
I did O Levels (summer 1984) Others did CSEs, depending on academic ability.
I went on to do A Levels (summer1986).
FWIW.

CCKid68 · 28/04/2025 06:54

IMO this is a stupid question. I was born in 1968, and I am nearly 60. And from my experience in life one should not and can not apologize for something that is a fact. So how can it be unreasonable? The statement is true. Guess I am just a bit more abrasive than others.
Since this is simply my opinion and not a fact... Am I Being Unreasonable?😃

Polgara2 · 28/04/2025 07:21

So what discounts can you get at 60 then?? (Asking for a friend 😉)

Well, if you live in London, all your travel will be free - tube, tram, rail and bus.

Free prescriptions. (And I think some discounts on eye-tests)

A third off national rail travel, with a senior railcard.

Lots of attractions/exhibitions etc offer discounts.

Iceland offer 10% off shopping on a Tuesday with their discount card.

Odeon cinemas do a Silver Screening, for just £3.50, and a cup of tea/coffee and a biscuit!

… and probably loads more. It’s brilliant being over 60!

EvidentClyburn · 28/04/2025 07:52

Morning everyone

What I meant by no O/A Levels or 6th form was I went to an extremely rough, working class school in a deprived area where O/A Levels and 6 Forms are anathema !! And the old Mumsnet favourite of Russell Group Unis - I mean whaaaaa? - this just wouldn’t have been a thing with us. However a few in our school DID do A Levels and Uni - BUT the 6th form closed straight after the 67/68 born intake iyswim. So just to clarify we are more CSEs and YTS schemes! 🤣

However this ⬇️ is a universal truism about everyone born in 1968;

Were all still young looking, good looking, fit and fresh faced

Women are all 8 stone maximum, and the men are all 28” waist maximum! 😊🙌

We haven’t changed much physically from when we celebrated our 21sts!! 🎉🎉🙌

Edited

London travel for 60 plus free after 900 if I recall, during the week but yes a brilliant bonus.

Boots also do special offers.

EvidentClyburn · 26/04/2025 08:25

Yes that’s the thing - all the 68 born kids I knew were from deprived council estates - uneducated parents - my own dad spent all his spare time at the pub and was an unskilled manual worker - looking back illiterate probably - he died in the 90s before the majority of people had internet access. I often wonder how he’d have fared in the internet age - but that’s a different thread perhaps !

I was born and raised in a council house, piss poor and went to a rough hole of a school. It was big too. Lots of us did O levels but only 14 of us in my year at 6th form.

Realistically possibly similar levels to my school

BitOutOfPractice · 28/04/2025 22:52

I’m a year older than you op (also nowhere near 60) and grew Up in a council house with wc parents and went To a big standard comp. I did levels and so did 90% of the school.

HoraceCope · 29/04/2025 05:18

we had two streams, i think
half did o levels and half did cses
on the whole

katepilar · 01/05/2025 14:55

Another2Cats · 25/04/2025 22:29

That's interesting. That certainly wasn't taught at primary school in my experience.

Here is a quick video of how a 30 degree angle would be drawn. Is this what you were talking about? If so, this is (or, at least, was) definitely not commonly taught at primary school level:

Hi, yes, drawing a 60° angle and drawing a half of that.

I'm nearly 50, it's two years and 4 months away.
