We left school and did our CSEs in 1984 - note no O Levels/A Levels or 6th Form - dear Mumsnetters

We came of age in 1986 - Hand of God - Mexico World Cup etc etc

Harold Wilson was PM when we were born

only CFs would call us ‘nearly’ ‘60’

What’s wrong with being ‘nearly 60’ though?

It’s like when you tell people your age and they do that mock compliment “you don’t look [age]!”. It’s ok to be [age], you don’t have to pretend I’m younger!

Nothing - 60 is relatively young in lifestyle nowadays

You're just a youngster OP.

Wait till you get to my age and then you will have something to complain about.

pimplebum · 25/04/2025 18:35

Aging is a privilege not everyone gets

don’t be a daft and celebrate life !

Exactly. I am 60. World didn't end on my birthday. I had a fabulous time surrounded by people I love.. No point dreading a certain age, you'll either get to it or not. I know what i'd prefer.

TobiasForgesContactLense · 25/04/2025 18:31

My husband left school in 1984. He is already going on about his 60th birthday party (in 2 and half years) so he clearly feels he is nearly 60!

It sounds like it’s going to be a great well organised event if this convo is starting already !

OfNoOne · 25/04/2025 18:36

It's factual. 57 or 58 rounds up to 60. If you're 57 or 58, you're nearly 60.

That's ok, by the way. Being 60 or nearly 60 is fine.

SantaToSSD · 25/04/2025 18:37

As someone who is actually 60, I would like to know why is it rude to describe someone as nearly 60? Inaccurate, maybe (though not in your case since you are nearer 60 than 50) but rude? Charming!

Lookingtomakechanges · 25/04/2025 18:38

Nearly 30 at most. How the years go by!

Gonksmum · 25/04/2025 18:38

I'm a Jan 68er and yes, we are approaching 60!! It is rather alarming, but true. Glad to be here.

And yet you’ve taken offence at it.

i went to to a school where vast majority did CSEs - doing O levels was practically unknown!

We were in bands at the old secondary modern, I was in the A band so it was gce for us.

Anywherebuthere · 25/04/2025 18:40

Above 55 is nearly 60!

DisforDarkChocolate · 25/04/2025 18:40

I was born in 68 and describe myself as nearly 60.

brunettemic · 25/04/2025 18:40

EvidentClyburn · 25/04/2025 18:31

Doesn’t feel like 40 years

well perhaps when you’re nearly 60 it’s harder to judge the passing of time

SatanicAngel · 25/04/2025 18:40

Well I was born in '78 and I'm nearly 50! 🤷🏻‍♀️

Mrsredlipstick · 25/04/2025 18:41

60 this year and blinking happy about that. My late brother was born 08/08/68 and I miss him every day.
Celebrate each year but it's nothing these days to be 60. Enjoy your privalage.

We didn’t realise Iceland discount was a thing !

I think it's Tuesday mornings. 10% off if you're over 60.

O levels & 6th forms did exist in 1984
I did a mixture of CSEs & O levels

GCSEs followed which were the equivalent of combined CSE & O level

6th formers had a common room enabling them to stay inside during breaks, our year successfully campaigned to have a common room as well - if I recall correctly we campaigned in the 4th year securing it for our 5th year, though I may be wrong and we managed it during the 5th year ((((It was over 40 years ago!))))

I did go back a few years ago to watch a football game, and sneaked off the field for a wander around.
Before we had secured our common room there was a ‘famous’ circle of rocks on a patch of green, where the ‘top dogs’ would stand. I tipped over a couple and they still had some of the names on them of the year above us, one of which was my best mates older brother. Perhaps the last generation of 5th years to circle those rocks

I’m also not nearly 60, just nearly nearly 60, and still not grown up

AquaPeer · 25/04/2025 18:43

Well my dad (😂) was born in 1958 and referred to himself as nearly 70 earlier so seems logical

MumoftwoGranofone · 25/04/2025 18:43

Same year group. Did O levels/GCEs, CSEs and A levels. I’m late 50s and thankful to be here but still closer to mid-50s than 60 🤣

catstudies · 25/04/2025 18:44

I was reading a classic book to my child and it said the story took place in 1988. It just sounded so ancient when I read it out loud. Different century and all.
Took me some time to do the maths and I surprised my child and myself when I admitted not only was I born but already a seven year old in that distant, distant time…

TheodoraCrumpet · 25/04/2025 18:45

My sister was born in 1966, and refuses to believe she'll be 60 next year. I suppose you're loads younger than her at least.

Sadly, it’s true….56/57 is closer to 60 than 50!

No idea what you mean about no O’levels/A-levels or 6th form…..you are talking about being born in 1968 and taking exams in 1984 aren’t you (not 1868 and 1884)? At my school, the less academically able took CSE’s and did vocational courses. But O/A levels definitely existed.

I have O and A levels and went to 6th form….what type of education did you have?!!

sofasoda · 25/04/2025 18:47

well old!
