We left school and did our CSEs in 1984 - note no O Levels/A Levels or 6th Form - dear Mumsnetters

We came of age in 1986 - Hand of God - Mexico World Cup etc etc

Harold Wilson was PM when we were born

only CFs would call us ‘nearly’ ‘60’

Did you do maths CSE?

EvidentClyburn · 25/04/2025 19:04

Ph3 · 25/04/2025 19:02

@EvidentClyburn how is it rude? If you were born in 1968 you’re 57 years old. Thats nearly 60 and That’s not rude it’s maths.

Fair enough - I just see us all as ‘young and beautiful’ - and in my mind it’s circa 1983 !

I was born 1958.. I'm nearer to 70 now than 60.😕

Ph3 · 25/04/2025 19:06

@EvidentClyburn and I say bravo! to that. Who cares! Live to the fullest!

Moier · 25/04/2025 19:07

P.S l did ' O' levels and got 7 passes.. 50 years ago.

We were born ar the BEST EVER time in music 💪

Doesn't mean you're not nearly 60 though 😉

And there's nothing wrong with being nearly 60.

I've just turned 51 and my partner is 61. He takes the piss all the time that I missed all the best music when it was first released. Or I went to see them in 1979. "How old were you then? 😉"

Getting older isn't an insult it's just a fact.

And I'd rather be my age now than 30+ years younger, tbh.

FlibbertyGibbitt · 25/04/2025 19:09

I turned 60 three weeks ago 🥳 I am happy that ;

I get free prescriptions 🥳

I can have a senior railcard (£40 first class return to London the other day )

that I have got here 🥳 some don’t so I count my blessings every day 🥳

jaytotbad · 25/04/2025 19:12

But you are nearly 60

Warmhandscoldheart · 25/04/2025 19:14

Needmorelego · 25/04/2025 18:32

Closer to 60 than 50 I'm afraid 😁
My husband turned 60 this year. He is taking full advantage of any deals. He now has a 60+ London Oyster card, Senior Railcard and a Senior Coach Card.
Unfortunately he can't do the Iceland discount for over 60s on Tuesday mornings because he's at work 😂

Iceland over 60s 10% off discount is all day on Tuesday. Also available at Food Warehouse if you've got one local to you 😉

EvidentClyburn · 25/04/2025 19:15

I mean we were STILL IN SCHOOL when Relax by Frankie was no 1 FFS!!

60???! no!!!!!

ShanghaiDiva · 25/04/2025 19:16

I sat my exams in 1984 and o levels were still around. All 11 of my exams are o levels #superswot!

BIWI · 25/04/2025 18:31

More tonic in your gin, perhaps?

Lmao 🤣

EvidentClyburn · 25/04/2025 18:31

Doesn’t feel like 40 years

What does a year feel like it, I don’t think time has a feeling! What I do know is that feelings aren’t facts! Numbers in the other hand are!

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 25/04/2025 19:18

Well of course you are! I was born in 1971, first year of GCSE, so you are obviously older than me!

TeenyTotAndTiny · 25/04/2025 19:19

You think that’s bad? Well in another ten years you will be nearly 70! 😧

Jane958 · 25/04/2025 19:23

Like an earlier poster, I was born in 1958, my next sibling in 1961 and the other in 1964.
We all did 'O' Levels.
Age is just a number.

TroysMammy · 25/04/2025 19:24

I'm a January 68er too and already counting down to when I'm 60 as I'll get a free bus pass. Hoping they won't up the age by then. I also know I have 9 years, 8 months and 8 days to state pension age. 😂

AngelicKaty · 25/04/2025 19:24

@EvidentClyburn I have no idea why you would be so vexed about this fact of life. At 56/57 you are "nearly 60" - get over it! Just wait until you actually are 60! 😂 Honestly, there's only one alternative to growing old: dying young. Which would you really prefer?

TheCountessofLocksley · 25/04/2025 19:24

EvidentClyburn · 25/04/2025 18:58

Ok I went to school in a deprived area - deprived council estates where our parents wouldn’t have had a day’s education - my Dad was a manual worker who could barely read or write

Snap! Apart from the literacy. My dad and I would sit and do crosswords and he’d read me the classics. English wasn’t my mom’s first language. She had no education past 14, but encouraged me to read, write and try my best at school.

rosemarble · 25/04/2025 19:25

I was born in 1970 - last year to do O levels.
I am in my mid 50s. That works for 53-56 and then I think I'll be late 50s and near 60.
Since you are 2 years old than me then I think you are nearly 60s.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 25/04/2025 19:27

EvidentClyburn · 25/04/2025 19:04

Fair enough - I just see us all as ‘young and beautiful’ - and in my mind it’s circa 1983 !

Yep. I'm 53 and in my head I feel about 28.

Hotflushesandchilblains · 25/04/2025 19:28

Just turned 60 so a little ahead of you - I am still surprised!!!! I would not have liked it a few years ago either, but you are nearer to 60 than anything else. The big surprise is when you get here - nothing happens. You feel the same. So dont stress.

Mexicantortilla · 25/04/2025 19:30

69er here and will be 56 tomorrow, I think whilst the general consensus is correct in being closer to 60 than 50 it is awful to be generic in rounding up someone’s age, whilst many of you won’t be concerned as you may well be no where near 60, I will tell you that the reality is not a pleasant one, retirement looming death is definitely nearer, health problems accelerating……please have some compassion and remember the person is 56/57 NOT 60

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 25/04/2025 19:31

You are nearly 60 so I'm afraid you are being completely unreasonable.

TheIceBear · 25/04/2025 19:31

What has all the stuff you have outlined got to do with anything ? About O levels and World Cup etc ? I don’t get it .
