CIS

Just read an article about the Supreme Court judgement today. It repeatedly refers to Cis women. I get so unbelievably annoyed by that term.

I am not a ‘Cis’ woman. I just hate the term. If you want to be a trans woman, fine. That’s what you are. Don’t make me the other side of your imaginary coin. Don’t make me call myself something I’m not. Don’t make me part of your ‘We’re all just at various points on the woman spectrum’ nonsense.

There are women. And there are trans women. Two entirely different things.

YANBU. I detest the term.

Barbadosgirl · 16/04/2025 22:54

Loathe it. YANBU

Sassysoonwins · 16/04/2025 22:55

I'd go so far as to say there are men and there are women full stop.

It always was an unnecessary, manipulative prefix forced on us, but today’s judgement surely should render it obsolete in the U.K.
(well, except for legitimate uses. I’ll still call some molecules cis.)

ThatNimblePeer · 16/04/2025 23:09

You’ve led a very easy life if this is what bugs you.

ChickenNuggetDreamland · 16/04/2025 23:10

Also detest it with all my might.

You’re either a man, a woman…or a man that wants to wear a dress and think he’s a woman.

Gattopardo · 16/04/2025 23:11

I hate it as a term: I get very cross when people suggest I am this.

luckily my workplace is great, and our training makes clear CIS is a contested term which some people find offensive ;)

nocoolnamesleft · 16/04/2025 23:13

I consider cis to be a slur. I am a woman.

onwardsup4 · 16/04/2025 23:18

😂 “we are on various points of the woman spectrum” fucking hell. YNBU it’s an absolute piss take.

Skyellaskerry · 16/04/2025 23:37

I find the term offensive and react when hearing it. I think it needs to be called out more.

I dont imagine your workplace is typical, so many use cis in training, definitions, policies, etc, without such qualification or consideration that it can be offensive.

SapphOhNo · 16/04/2025 23:43

Can't get too exercised over it. Count yourself lucky if that's what you have to worry about

Bogginsthe3rd · 16/04/2025 23:45

I guess if you were born a woman and you are a woman you are a cis woman. It's a just a term which you don't have to use if you don't want.

Absolutely this.

As Hadley Freeman said.... "women are women and transwomen are transwomen", which sums up the issue of terminology quite succinctly.

I'm wondering,..... what's the current ladies' lavatory setup at The Bridge and the RFH? Haven't been to either for a while.

No, you’re just a woman.

Cis relates to gender identity and assumes that we all have one, when we don’t.

It sounds like other people would call you a cis woman then. You don't have to use that term.

Quite. And I object being referred to this way.

Nope. And applying the term to women who reject it is against MN talk guidelines.

They don’t have to use it either.

OtterInABlueTie · 17/04/2025 00:05

I hate it. Why can't they just call us women and Transwomen transwomen?

Just to check my thinking on this,

it would be bad if I were to presume to know the gender identity of a TW, TM or NB person right? At least that’s what the message seems to be.

But it’s OK for others to presume to know that I have a gender identity and to call me cis, even if I don’t like that and don’t feel like I actually do have a gender identity, I know I’m a woman because I’m female, not because I feel like one. I have no idea what ‘a woman’ feels like, I just know what I feel like.

Is my understanding of this logic vacuum correct? I can’t presume to know other peoples gender identity, but they can presume to know mine.

Enough4me · 17/04/2025 00:14

I agree. It doesn't mean anything as women are women, we don't need an addition to show we are real women unless we may be confused in a conversation about a stuffed toy woman and, even then, then we'd use 'real' and not 'cis'.
When compared with men, we are clearly the other sex of the two available.
The whole concept of trans is a story that was allowed to go too far, follow the money and the predators to see who gains!

I think then the would simply say that you were born a female and you are a woman because you feel that you are a woman. And probably only say this if that was offered up by yourself. It's more of a philosophical question of you being you. I think therefore I am.

ServantoftheBones · 17/04/2025 00:18

Yep. You’re one or the other. Male or female. Don’t denigrate my being a woman with bullshit made up terms or some how manage to make actual women lesser because men can’t even accept their male privilege but some of them just have to force their encroaching onto “being female” when they’re not, they never fucking were and they never fucking will be! It’s not a case of welcome to the lower half we’ve always been considered as. It’s bulldozing their bullshit all over everything we have ever fought for and had to endure. Fuck that!
