Is the floral dress and white trainers look out?

garricces · 30/03/2025 20:21

So it’s been really nice as we all know. My go to for work is the floral dress and white trainers and I was told by my younger colleague this look is “out”

I know it doesn’t matter as long as you like what you wear, but I’m also conscious of not looking stylish but keeping my look “fresh”

Do you like it?
Do you feel comfortable?
Then wear it.
I saw a tiktok today: the worst dressed people are the ones who follow EVERY trend. So true. Dress in what you like. I bet you look lovely.

No irony that, as a middle aged woman, you saw what was deeply uncool on a TikTok?

I guess someone has decided we're not spending enough on clothes and has declared its time to change and everyone needs a new wardrobe.

There is no other reason for trends.

I'm short, fat and walk a lot. Trainers and dresses/skirts is not a great look for me but it is practical.

Someone has been deciding that for centuries otherwise we would all be having mice living in our wigs and have our hand maidens do our corsets every morning.

ThisPinkBee · 30/03/2025 22:05

Wear the dress with beige Adidas special gazelles. That seems to be the trendy trainer (observations in London).

ThisPinkBee · 30/03/2025 22:07

I have to say I agree - wear one trendy thing per outfit not all over trendy. Then people hone in on that one thing and say ooh I like that.

Noroomfor · 30/03/2025 21:05

Well surely even with trainer socks your feet are hot and sweaty?
I'm a sandals in summer person - I have multiple pairs.

Do you live in a particularly cold area because I'm in Scotland and it's certainly warm enough here for sandals. Obviously not in winter but it will certainly be warm enough for them soon.

Not everyone has sweaty feet. Sorry you suffer from them but mine don’t sweat any more in trainers than they do in sandals. Even when I run in the summer, my feet don’t sweat. Sorry for your affliction. 🙄

Why do people ALWAYS feel the need to come on threads like this and come out with this ‘wear what you want’ and ‘you can do what you like’ tosh? It’s so painfully predictable and dull, dull, dull.

We know. Everyone knows. OP knows. She even explicitly said I know it doesn’t matter as long as you like what you wear, but I’m also conscious of not looking stylish but keeping my look “fresh”

You are not contributing anything new or interesting to the conversation by declaring yourself an individual who doesn’t follow trends. That’s nice for you. Some people are interested in trends. This OP is one of them.

I've just bought these crocs https://www.schuh.co.uk/womens/crocs-stomp-fisherman-black-sandals/1748777060/?utm_source=google&utm_medium=surfaces-across-google&utm_campaign=organic-shopping&gad_source=1&gclid=Cj0KCQjw16O_BhDNARIsAC3i2GCM1Bt-lPTXIJlEtQIe01bCYtUy7thZOVjuJhUpgb77AUSN9qjUJrYaAj7UEALw_wcB.

I love them.

My work and going out ensemble is going to floral dresses and these all summer long for me!!

Sod fashion, they are comfy and give me extra height and who doesn't love a beautiful floral dress?

Gelatibon · 30/03/2025 22:17

I'm going for a more sporty tshirt/vest type dress this year and coloured trainers, but I won't be giving up trainers and dresses.

I saw a woman in trainers, floral dress and denim jacket today. I think it will still get worn, no matter what some think.

I love a denim jacket with a summer dress, trainers and a cross the body bag so I think this thread has established that I am deeply off trend 😂

Slightly off topic, but does anyone know about skinny/straight jeans? Are they back? As a 90s child I cringe at the wide bottomed, super long jeans that soak up water as people walk down the street.

I've just bought a pair of wide leg bleached jeans, so I image skinnies will be back any day now.

Yes of course men are told what's in and what's not.

Op said, "My go to for work is the floral dress and white trainers and I was told by my younger colleague this look is “out”"

Can you really imagine a younger colleague telling an older male, "You can't wear those chinos and brown shoes anymore - they're out" Different standards.

Obviously mens fashions do change, but more slowly.

Yes, IME men are very happy to tell colleagues they're dressed like an old man or other such "banter" and young women often offer advice to smarten up or modernise male colleagues.

thenightsky · 30/03/2025 22:29

Trainers last for years. Are we supposed to throw out perfectly comfy, well made shoes because they are 'out'?

Fuck the environment eh?

doodahdayy · 30/03/2025 22:29

I’d look a bit simple wearing trainers and long socks at 40

Well, that's nice that there's equality of some sort there 😆

Well thank goodness if we are seeing the back of white trainers at least!

I'm sick of the sight of trainers.

They are OK in their place and I understand they are comfortable but I don't understand how women were brainwashed into thinking they actually look good with dresses. Give me a pair of Roman sandals or chunky sandals with a dress any day.

I just can't get away from thinking wearing trainers in summer must result in disgusting smelly, sweaty feet.

I’m glad women have been ‘brainwashed’ as it means I can wear trainers with everything and minimise the pain in my foot without looking out of place!

And no, I don’t have disgusting, sweaty, smelly feet

Yes, 100%. It’s interesting that you can’t.

Surprised to hear white trainers are out. All the baby groups, soft play and farms etc I go to with the children, everyone is wearing Veja white trainers.

Doesn't that say it all 😆

Us millennials are still being mocked about skinny jeans. None of the young adults I know never wear them or owns pair. Straight, maybe. Skinny, never. That being said, gen z is getting older now so maybe the alphas will fix this and bring them back! (No, I don't normally talk in gen terms)

pontipinemum · 30/03/2025 22:34

feelinghopeless2025 · 30/03/2025 20:59

And what’s the average age of people at those places?

OP that look is “out” for young people, but millennials it’s still clearly very much in. If you’re a millennial then crack on!

My thoughts exactly! I am right in the middle of the millennial bracket as are most of the women I meet at those sorts of groups.

SemperIdem · 30/03/2025 22:35

I think technically speaking it is “out” but given that barrel leg trousers are currently “in”, I think it’s important to just make the call on what you like wearing, what suits you and wear it. Perhaps a plainer dress/bright trainers to vary the look a bit, if you’re so inclined.

I cannot be convinced that barrel leg trousers aren’t a social experiment to enable sight recognition of those most easily duped by marketing ads.

Ooh, that's interesting. What's my blindspot?

fratellia · 30/03/2025 22:37

I think it’s pretty classic and you can’t go wrong with it 🤷‍♀️

I can’t keep up with trends anymore. I had adidas gazelles and sambas about 5/6 years ago and they were ‘mum trainers’ and uncool- now they are everywhere. Ditto New Balance being ‘dad/geography teacher’ shoes a few years ago. Even crocs are now acceptable teen shoes.

Just wear what makes you feel good and comfortable 👍🏻
