Is the floral dress and white trainers look out?

So it’s been really nice as we all know. My go to for work is the floral dress and white trainers and I was told by my younger colleague this look is “out”

I know it doesn’t matter as long as you like what you wear, but I’m also conscious of not looking stylish but keeping my look “fresh”

OP posts:

Surprised to hear white trainers are out. All the baby groups, soft play and farms etc I go to with the children, everyone is wearing Veja white trainers.

And what’s the average age of people at those places?

OP that look is “out” for young people, but millennials it’s still clearly very much in. If you’re a millennial then crack on!

Well thank goodness if we are seeing the back of white trainers at least!

I'm sick of the sight of trainers.

They are OK in their place and I understand they are comfortable but I don't understand how women were brainwashed into thinking they actually look good with dresses. Give me a pair of Roman sandals or chunky sandals with a dress any day.

I just can't get away from thinking wearing trainers in summer must result in disgusting smelly, sweaty feet.

Of course it doesn't, you wear trainers socks with them obviously. It's hardly ever hot enough anyway.

SkyOfficer · 30/03/2025 21:00

Never sure white trainers and floral dresses were in with younger people anyway.

I bought some yesterday and plan on wearing them as have zero fucks to give.

Reallyyyyyy · 30/03/2025 21:01

If it's in my wardrobe then it's in. Who's got time and money to keep changing their clothes?

AllrightNowBaby · 30/03/2025 21:04

My 16 year old Grandson told me recently that you can wear whatever you want to do these days.
So I’d go for it if I was you.

SnugMintFawn · 30/03/2025 21:04

Do people seriously talk about what is “out”?!!
Good lord, who cares 🙄
I bet your floral dress + white trainers looked gorgeous OP!

Well surely even with trainer socks your feet are hot and sweaty?
I'm a sandals in summer person - I have multiple pairs.

Do you live in a particularly cold area because I'm in Scotland and it's certainly warm enough here for sandals. Obviously not in winter but it will certainly be warm enough for them soon.

Pigeonqueen · 30/03/2025 21:07

Well I’m still going to wear my floral dresses because they’re cool and comfortable but for a change from the trainers I’ll be wearing either fisherman sandals (chunky ones with a caged toe) or maybe some Birkenstock clogs. They seem quite “in” at the moment. I think the “in” alternative to the floral dress is plain maxi dresses or a lot of linen in natural colours.

Mylittlebobble · 30/03/2025 21:10

I felt sad reading this. Its like another thing that women my age are criticised for: not wearing the right clothes. Are men in their 40s told they can't wear certain combinations of clothes? No! It's just more hoops for women to jump through.

Laiste · 30/03/2025 21:12

Honestly, unless you really are seriously following cat walk fashion, then once the look is seen in public it's already almost out.

What sort of 'in' do you mean?
Do you mean 'in' as in everyone on the school run is still in it?
Or the rich and famous are still in it?
Or french models are clamouring to wear it?
Or Sainsbury's are still doing a version of it every year?

Once everyone and their mother (literally) is in it - well it's looooonng dead wrt being actual high fashion, but what does it matter? Who are you worried about seeing you and thinking anything?

Whatever the heck it is, wear it if you love it.

No, because trainers have little holes in for breathability. They are literally made to wick away sweat.

I wear white trainers and midi dresses still, just separately. I tend to wear platform Converse with my dresses!

Well yes they are mostly millennials but I live in an area with lots of young parents and so some of the other mothers at these places are clearly only in their early-mid 20s. I was looking to these women as much more on trend than older me, haha.

Vejas are out too 😹

vandelle · 30/03/2025 21:15

Someone mentioned the cross body bag as part of the dress/trainer combo.

What bags are replacing them - an old crone who doesn't give a fuck about fashion would like to know please?

wineintrastevere · 30/03/2025 21:15

What about adding crew socks to the combination?
Would that bring it up to date?

Allthenameshavegone1972 · 30/03/2025 21:15

I love my floral dresses & trainers, but they're not white. And I love a cross body bag as it's practical & leaves your hands free. I'm nearly 60, still love my New Romantic & goth nights out & dress accordingly! I have zero f's to give too. I'm more about feeling comfortable in nice clothes. If they're not scruffy & threadbare I will wear them until they are. There's far too much throw away fashion & waste in the world. On top of all that at my age I'd rather spend my money on my dc & dgs, as well as enjoying my leisure time while I'm still healthy enough, rather than buying more clothes just because some fashionista says I have to!

Laiste · 30/03/2025 21:17

I mean i spend all summer looking at my 3 (20 something) daughters clothes and thinking oooh nice ! Maybe i should get some of those ...

And then bunging on my fitflops and the cotton A line skirt i've had for the last 4 years 😂

redshoesredlaces · 30/03/2025 21:17

Pussert · 30/03/2025 20:41

But everyone should wear whatever they like anyway regardless of what's fashionable or not

Of course people can wear what they want. But some people like to be a little more on trend. Others don’t mind wearing outdated clothes that are still serviceable

jellyfishperiwinkle · 30/03/2025 21:17

Wear what you like. Who cares what is in or out once you are an adult? Fashion makes people discard good clothes far too quickly.

I don’t know what’s in but I’ve gone back to shoulder bags as now I need reading glasses for any phone activity I can’t fit my glasses, sun glasses, purse, phone, shopper bag, lip salve and water bottle in a cross body.

TinyRebel · 30/03/2025 21:18

Wear whatever you like. I was in a fashionable area of a wealthy city today and noted a young mum in multi-coloured sporty trainers, a white strappy sundress and some kind of black and purple shell suit jacket monstrosity over the top.

This is why my daughter doesn’t allow me into Urban outfitters with her. I say things like “we used to wear that in the 90s, but not together”.

It seems like it’s fashionable to throw on the first combination you see, as if you ran through a vintage shop/jumble sale blindfolded.

Whaleandsnail6 · 30/03/2025 21:20

Ive still been wearing skinny jeans with boots all winter so I'll stick to my out of style spring and summer dress and trainer combo as well!

I don't really follow fashion. I find something that I think suits my frame and just go with it.

its not an age thing. It’s a fashion thing. No one has to follow trends but some people enjoy looking on trend. Others don’t mind looking dated.

YipYapYop · 30/03/2025 21:20

This look brings to mind Lily Allen in about 2011. I think it's been around a while so surely it's more of a staple than a trend?

Ah yes, I have shoulder bags, but they have long straps and I wear them cross body. Fit loads, and they don't fall off my shoulder, and less likely to be robbed aswell.

Fashion my arse.
