Is the floral dress and white trainers look out?

garricces · 30/03/2025 20:21

So it’s been really nice as we all know. My go to for work is the floral dress and white trainers and I was told by my younger colleague this look is “out”

I know it doesn’t matter as long as you like what you wear, but I’m also conscious of not looking stylish but keeping my look “fresh”

Bloody hell.

Wear whatever you like.

Personally, I don’t give a toss about “in” or “out”. There are no rules, just what some nauseating influencers or whatever decide will make them more money.

You do you.

Exactly. And who has the money to keep buying new clothes wkth every trend.

Wear whatever you like. I was in a fashionable area of a wealthy city today and noted a young mum in multi-coloured sporty trainers, a white strappy sundress and some kind of black and purple shell suit jacket monstrosity over the top.

This is why my daughter doesn’t allow me into Urban outfitters with her. I say things like “we used to wear that in the 90s, but not together”.

It seems like it’s fashionable to throw on the first combination you see, as if you ran through a vintage shop/jumble sale blindfolded.

I actually think this sounds like a look!

I’m 50 and fresh out of fucks to give. I like dresses and white trainers.

This made me laugh.
I’m 68, wear trainers mostly in different colours including white. I just bought a pair of Onitsuka Tiger trainers and my son was so impressed. He wanted to know how I’d heard of them like I was some decrepit gran. I am a grandmother and occasionally decrepit but like to be a little on trend.

Of course it doesn't, you wear trainers socks with them obviously. It's hardly ever hot enough anyway.

Trainer socks are out 😁 , it’s longer ankle/crew socks now. Even with a dress.

NattyTurtle59 · 30/03/2025 21:23

Suzuki76 · 30/03/2025 21:13

No, because trainers have little holes in for breathability. They are literally made to wick away sweat.

I wear white trainers and midi dresses still, just separately. I tend to wear platform Converse with my dresses!

I live in NZ and find trainers far too hot to wear in summer. I wear them only to go for a long walk, otherwise it's sandals. Little holes or not they are not comfortable on hot days, and once you add a layer of socks - no way!

Moier · 30/03/2025 21:24

66 here.. l love the look.. but changed my white trainers to rose pink.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 30/03/2025 21:24

I don't care. It's comfortable, flattering and suitable for most things. Who are 'they' to decide that it's 'out'?

EbbandTheWanderingHearts · 30/03/2025 21:24

Who cares if it's in or out? Wear what feels comfortable and what you like. Set your own trends. Confidence is the key. 👌 Mind you I'm the least trendy person going so what do I know?! 😂

QuirkInTheMatrix · 30/03/2025 21:26

Pussert · 30/03/2025 20:39

White trainers definitely out.

Young uns are wearing bright trainers and ballet pump style trainers.

Someone needs to tell all my 18yo/19yo students then, they all still seem to be wearing white trainers. Mostly new balance, some adidas with navy or grey stripes. Occasional pink/green/red adidas but mainly white still. Have seen no ballet pump style trainers.

Hoolihan · 30/03/2025 21:27

Who cares what's in fashion! Wear what you like! I've got zero fucks to give! Says someone for the millionth time.

Well I actually do own a couple of pairs of trainers- coloured ones- which I wear with trousers because I've never thought trainers looked anything other than crass with dresses and skirts. And my feet get warm and uncomfortable in trainers in summer.
So I'm afraid my experience is different from yours.

Hopper123 · 30/03/2025 21:29

Well apparently high waist is on its way out and the really low waist from the early 00's is back ha ha nobody needs that trend back bloody awful!! I'll stick with my high comfortable waistlines, my white trainers and whatever else I fancy wearing on any given day it looks terrible when a middle aged woman tries to keep up with the 20 somethings. Just wear what flatters you not what's 'in'. I think your young work colleague was pretty rude actually who on earth comments on and judges what a colleague at work is wearing??? Ahh one day gen z will be the uncool middle aged ones and will have their day.

jellyfishperiwinkle · 30/03/2025 21:29

I've been wearing dresses of one kind or another with trainers of one kind or another in spring and summer since I was about ten years old in 1985, but it's kind of sweet that the fashion industry like to pass it off as a new trend every now and then.

DustyLee123 · 30/03/2025 21:30

I saw a woman in trainers, floral dress and denim jacket today. I think it will still get worn, no matter what some think.

dreamingbohemian · 30/03/2025 21:33

Well you should wear whatever you want. But I work at a university and the kids seem to be into either mid 90s style or what I call cybergoth, extremely cool look. Not a floral dress in sight.

Like PP I thought floral dresses and trainers went out with Lily Allen!

mulledwineandcheese · 30/03/2025 21:33

There’s a huge difference between being stylish and fashionable. You can still be stylish wearing whatever you like, even if they aren’t necessarily on trend. Stylish beats trendy in my book every time!

I think the longer socks look great on younger people but would look ridiculous on 50-something me!

Mylittlebobble · 30/03/2025 21:36

redshoesredlaces · 30/03/2025 21:20

its not an age thing. It’s a fashion thing. No one has to follow trends but some people enjoy looking on trend. Others don’t mind looking dated.

I see a lot of posts on here asking if something is still OK to wear, coming from a place of worry that they don't want to be a middle age cliche. On another thread, someone mentioned that floral dresses, white trainers and denim jackets are seen as a bit of a joke on tiktok. So all that's about fitting in and not wanting to be derided.

So agree with you that some people love fashion and it comes from a place of joy. But for others it's about trying not to stand out as doing something wrong, ie being 'frumpy' or another code word for being an older woman.

ThisUniqueDreamer · 30/03/2025 21:21

Exactly. And who has the money to keep buying new clothes wkth every trend.

But you wouldn’t have to buy new clothes, just wear them in different combinations.

I think by ‘out’ the OP might mean ‘overdone’ and this trend certainly has been. No one wants to wear what’s become a uniform.

You would though. If the high waist is out and you don't have low slung jeans and want to keep up trends you have to buy them.

PrettayGood · 30/03/2025 21:39

Yes, it’s a dated look. A shame because I loved it.

Poonu · 30/03/2025 21:41

Mylittlebobble · 30/03/2025 21:10

I felt sad reading this. Its like another thing that women my age are criticised for: not wearing the right clothes. Are men in their 40s told they can't wear certain combinations of clothes? No! It's just more hoops for women to jump through.

Yes of course men are told what's in and what's not.
