Is the floral dress and white trainers look out?

garricces · 30/03/2025 20:21

So it’s been really nice as we all know. My go to for work is the floral dress and white trainers and I was told by my younger colleague this look is “out”

I know it doesn’t matter as long as you like what you wear, but I’m also conscious of not looking stylish but keeping my look “fresh”

OP posts:
RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 30/03/2025 22:39

If the OP is real and this really happened, then she needs to tell her colleagues to fuck off.

HiCandles · 30/03/2025 20:30

Surprised to hear white trainers are out. All the baby groups, soft play and farms etc I go to with the children, everyone is wearing Veja white trainers.

I feel lie this confirms that they are out.
When baby groups wears them, time to move on 😁
(I will keep wearing my skinny jeans/floral dresses with my white sneakers)

PLHJ84 · 30/03/2025 22:40

I’m 40 & floral dresses (or jump suits or crop trousers) with white trainers is my summer wardrobe. I couldn’t care less how “unfashionable”
i am but i have lived in skinny jeans for the past 20 years and they are apparently “in” again so i’m maybe semi stylish after all 🤣

Ooh, that's interesting. What's my blindspot?

Ah, I don’t think I worded my post properly. Interesting in that we clearly know very different men or have worked in very different places if you’d find this at all surprising.

I actually think it’s far more common/usual for young men to say this sort of thing to older men/colleagues than for young women to say it (unless they’re your daughter or similar). Generally, women would be far too worried about hurting feelings or causing offence!

Gelatibon · 30/03/2025 22:27

Yes, IME men are very happy to tell colleagues they're dressed like an old man or other such "banter" and young women often offer advice to smarten up or modernise male colleagues.

Ime this is total nonsense.

MumoftwoGranofone · 30/03/2025 21:35

I think the longer socks look great on younger people but would look ridiculous on 50-something me!

Noooo! I have always hated the hidden socks and loved a good ankle/crew sock. I’m thrilled they’re back. I’m 56 and if I look as mad as a spanner then well done me.

doodahdayy · 30/03/2025 22:42

What’s the alternative then?

latetothefisting · 30/03/2025 22:42

despite OP LITERALLY saying "I know it doesn’t matter as long as you like what you wear"
cue multiple posters telling her to wear it if she likes it/they don't care about trends/who cares what everyone else thinks, blah blah blah
SHE KNOWS THAT.
She wants to know whether it's a current up-to-date trend
It was the 'go to' look circa 2020. Most outfits aren't still on trend 5 years later. Doesn't mean ALL white trainers and ALL floral dresses are out out out like the shoulder pads and anyone wearing them will be shunned from society, just that the full white trainers with ankle socks midi floral print denim jacket look is slightly dated.
SHE KNOWS SHE CAN STILL WEAR IT IF SHE WANTS TO

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 30/03/2025 22:44

ForZanyAquaViewer · 30/03/2025 22:10

Why do people ALWAYS feel the need to come on threads like this and come out with this ‘wear what you want’ and ‘you can do what you like’ tosh? It’s so painfully predictable and dull, dull, dull.

We know. Everyone knows. OP knows. She even explicitly said I know it doesn’t matter as long as you like what you wear, but I’m also conscious of not looking stylish but keeping my look “fresh”

You are not contributing anything new or interesting to the conversation by declaring yourself an individual who doesn’t follow trends. That’s nice for you. Some people are interested in trends. This OP is one of them.

Edited

Yet those posters have as much right as you do to state their opinion. The OP is entirely free to ignore it.

And I have every right to state my opinion of their opinion. You’re entirely free to ignore it.

And so it goes, ad infinitum.

fratellia · 30/03/2025 22:46

@latetothefisting Fair point.

Is there a slightly refreshed or updated version of this look?
I remember following a lady on TikTok who would take classic ‘millennial fits’ and just tweak a few details so the concept was the same but the outfit looked a bit more up-to-date.

henlake7 · 30/03/2025 22:46

It may be unfashionable but floral dresses are summer and trainers are comfy so I don't see it going anywhere (even if peer pressure influenced twenty something's disagree).
We can't all afford multiple outfits and shoes every year so you stick with what works!

I love a floaty frock but tend to wear baseball boots or van type shoes (with crew socks) coz I do alot of walking and tend to have cold feet. Proper trainers aren't really my thing but I will be chucking on a denim jacket and a cross body bag!

Sugarnspicenallthingsnaice · 30/03/2025 22:46

Mylittlebobble · 30/03/2025 22:25

Op said, "My go to for work is the floral dress and white trainers and I was told by my younger colleague this look is “out”"

Can you really imagine a younger colleague telling an older male, "You can't wear those chinos and brown shoes anymore - they're out" Different standards.

Obviously mens fashions do change, but more slowly.

I've got 2 young adult sons and they are constantly on each other about what is in and out. It's all about little details like the brand of shoe - not something that's necessarily as obvious as women's trends if you are just taking in their overall look, but those who are interested and paying attention certainly notice.

Unsolicited comments to a colleague is another matter, of course!

HiCandles · 30/03/2025 21:55

I think the long pulled up white sports socks looks completely ridiculous on anyone tbh, but I accept that I am in the minority and just don't wear them myself.
I really do think it's fascinating that something can be so hideously uncool and then be cool. God if any girl at my secondary school had ankle socks showing above trainers she would've been laughed at. Some were even folding down trainer socks because the 0.5cm visible was just too sad.

I'm in my 50s and actually find the crew sock trend really comfortable. Maybe it's the slight compression they give my ageing ankles.

But I do worry I look like I'm trying to fit in, like I'm delusional and think I actually look good.

It's all well and good to say "wear what you want" but some of us are obviously more sensitive to feeling judged than others, even at an age you'd think we'd be over it.

Do you remember her name? That sounds quite fun!

uncomfortablydumb60 · 30/03/2025 22:47

I’m 60, love a floral dress, but don’t own a pair of white trainers, and never have.

MumWifeOther · 30/03/2025 22:48

Daisyrainbows · 30/03/2025 20:22

Yep it’s out. As soon as middle aged women wear it the younger ones move on. Then it’s a couple of years of older people wearing it then it’s out I think

Respectfully, I don’t think anyone young ever wore this look. My mum is really the only person I know (late 50s) who wore this.

That being said, if the OP is happy in this outfit, then she should definitely not stop!

Sugarnspicenallthingsnaice · 30/03/2025 22:49

Just a random thought on all the posts from women who love their floral dresses with white trainers and don't care if it's fashionable - unless you haven't changed your look since the 80s, at some point you did jump back on this trend because it was in fashion. So you ARE following some trends - you're just pretending that you don't when it suits you.

MiniPumpkin · 30/03/2025 22:49

Well white trainers with a dress have never been an option for me, even with fake tan my legs are so white it all just blends in, hideous.
it’s blacks and colours, adidas gazelles and courts are in. however the sock is a giveaway of age.. apparently the trainer sock is for old folk.
i could not care, trainer socks all the way 😀

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 30/03/2025 22:50

Poonu · 30/03/2025 21:41

Yes of course men are told what's in and what's not.

Men’s fashions change much, much more slowly and most men get away with much narrower wardrobes than women, or certainly the men I know.

Springup24 · 30/03/2025 22:53

I'm quite excited about the handful of posts suggesting skinny jeans are back 😄

Not for me. I like it so I'm going to keep doing it. For me it's comfortable and practical and I like how it looks.

It makes no sense financially or ecologically to chuck out decent stuff just because someone whose job it is to sell us new things says we should.

Exactly.

Usually the true summer season is 3 months of the year- 4 if we're lucky.
There is no way I'm ditching hardly-worn clothes because someone tells me not to wear them. When all they want to do is sell more stuff.

Jesslikesjam · 30/03/2025 22:54

Just wear what you want, following the latest fashion is for the vacuous brain dead

LuckyAmy1986 · 30/03/2025 22:55

apparently (according to a thread on here) long straight hair was out. But every girl i see (teenage) round here, has long straight hair..... and the new pantene advert, they all have straight long hair.
