Is the floral dress and white trainers look out?

garricces · 30/03/2025 20:21

So it’s been really nice as we all know. My go to for work is the floral dress and white trainers and I was told by my younger colleague this look is “out”

I know it doesn’t matter as long as you like what you wear, but I’m also conscious of not looking stylish but keeping my look “fresh”

I think certain looks 'stick' because they are versatile and comfy.

You wear the style of floral dress/skirt which suits you, the style of white trainer you're comfy in and a sensible cross body bag!

What's not to love!

DelphiniumHolly · 30/03/2025 21:42

Slightly off topic, but does anyone know about skinny/straight jeans? Are they back? As a 90s child I cringe at the wide bottomed, super long jeans that soak up water as people walk down the street.

Laiste · 30/03/2025 21:42

The leggings, ugg boots and sweat shirt was the same.

whymewhyme · 30/03/2025 21:43

They took my skinny jeans, theywill never take my floral dresses or my white trainers!!!

Who knows!?
To be honest i don't see many 20 somethings in skinnys any more.

But do you want to look like you're trying to be a 20 something that's the thing?

Once you have kids who are properly and effortlessly trendy if feels weird to be copying them i've found.

I wear what suits me now.

I felt sad reading this. Its like another thing that women my age are criticised for: not wearing the right clothes. Are men in their 40s told they can't wear certain combinations of clothes? No! It's just more hoops for women to jump through.

That is a very, very good point!!

whymewhyme · 30/03/2025 21:47

I live on leggings, pulled up socks, oversized T-shirt and huddys, some days I wonder if that trend goes and she shops stop selling oversize Ts what on earth am I going to wear ( aside from floral dresses and white trainers).BlushConfused

ScruffGin · 30/03/2025 20:24

I've only just started wearing the white trainers, and they're out already?!

Although maybe people like me are the reason, given I'm over 40 and wearing them, probably puts the younger ones off 😂

Shit, when did they come IN?? I missed that totally, I'm 38 and when I was a kid only old people wore white trainers. And called them sneakers 😆

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 30/03/2025 21:48

I'd tell your young gobshite of a colleague that commenting rudely about people's appearance is always out of fashion.

And wear whatever the fuck you like.

dreamingbohemian · 30/03/2025 21:49

My sense from the youth is that they're not really dogmatic about what's in or out, you can find your online community who likes what you like

But certain things ARE out, like skinny jeans sure, and anything too frumpy

OutwiththeOutCrowd · 30/03/2025 21:51

It's always in to carry on wearing what's out if you love it.

As a bonus you can then be in the vanguard, whilst still remaining clueless, when the trend comes back round again.

Isthiswhatmenthink · 30/03/2025 21:52

It’s quite a mumsy look and is still enduring away from the big smoke.

I really hope it marks the end of Vejas and NB 327.

Sure, but some of us like to keep a weather eye on the evolution of fashion. 90s vibes are really enduring. I see a lot of long denim skirts and skorts. I really can’t get back on that particular bandwagon though.

theDudesmummy · 30/03/2025 21:54

Planning to probably wear a maxi floral dress dress and plimsolls (not white though) to my daughter's wedding in the summer. I'm 61 and I don't care, and I can't wear heels anymore due to back and ankle injuries, also the wedding is a rural outdoor affair, so heels would be pretty impractical anyway. Also it's not in the UK and most of the guests will be eastern Europeans, so perhaps they won't care is what is in or not in the UK!

Darkdiamond · 30/03/2025 21:54

I like staying on trend because it's fun but I certainly don't throw the baby out with the bathwater. Certain things I'll just not wear together anymore, but still wear them. I like being creative with combinations and one or two new items and new mixture of clothes can refresh the trend. To read some of these posts you'd think anyone who had an interest in fashion just blindly puts all their clothes in a skip and replaces their wardrobes while their old stuff lies in a landfill. We aren't that stupid. Fashion doesn't have to be wasteful if you're creative, which most trendy people are. Fwiw, I know a lady who is a fashion buyer for a major European department store. She goes to the fashion weeks and knows what's coming up over the next 12 months and she always looks cool but not trendy.

Hazeby · 30/03/2025 21:55

I feel like you either dress like others your age, which means you end up in the ‘mum’ uniform of the day or you try keep up with the kids and look silly. Better just to wear what you like and feel good in.

HiCandles · 30/03/2025 21:55

Laiste · 30/03/2025 21:38

God yes!

I think the long pulled up white sports socks looks completely ridiculous on anyone tbh, but I accept that I am in the minority and just don't wear them myself.
I really do think it's fascinating that something can be so hideously uncool and then be cool. God if any girl at my secondary school had ankle socks showing above trainers she would've been laughed at. Some were even folding down trainer socks because the 0.5cm visible was just too sad.

Rewis · 30/03/2025 21:56

Daisyrainbows · 30/03/2025 20:22

Yep it’s out. As soon as middle aged women wear it the younger ones move on. Then it’s a couple of years of older people wearing it then it’s out I think

This. We've ruined for the youth.

Neverplayleapfrogwithmrpipes · 30/03/2025 21:58

I was welll into floral dresses with White trainers. I am 47 but work in design so try to keep relatively up to date. Mind you, I have worn skinny jeans for so long they have come back around!

I now tend to do Oliver bonas skirts with a light sweater and gazelles

I also love a Lucy and yak jumpsuit

I live in a very trendy city with lots of universities and colleges, and have been surprised to recently see quite a few rather beautiful young women wearing skinny jeans!

MrsJJ84 · 30/03/2025 21:58

Yer I’d say it’s had its day . Brightly colored adidas sambas or gazelles are what seem to be in now . I’d wear a bright trainer with a dress but not a white trainer . However each to their own and if you feel good and happy wear what you like xxx

Yes, this is exactly what I was getting at. You don’t throw everything out, just wear it differently.

It’s lack of creativity and individuality that makes you look dated imo.

I still wear my denim jacket, but now I wear it with wide leg trousers and white t shirt. And I still have long floral dresses but I’d wear them with sandals or with a cropped jumper over.

IShotTheDeputyItWasMe · 30/03/2025 21:59

I guess someone has decided we're not spending enough on clothes and has declared its time to change and everyone needs a new wardrobe.

There is no other reason for trends.

I'm short, fat and walk a lot. Trainers and dresses/skirts is not a great look for me but it is practical.

This. Honestly I wouldn’t be feeding a twentysomething’s ego that they are the arbiters of style and what’s in. You have the opportunity to model for her not giving a fuck and the fact that she can learn something from you, not the other way round.

Mirabai · 30/03/2025 22:01

I’ve been wearing floral dresses in the summer since my 20s I’m not going to stop now.

Never wear trainers for anything other than training.
