I was hoping that it was mostly just bluster from Trump. But we've woken up to the news that he has actually done it. He's literally swapped sides in the war and is now standing with the aggressor, Russia, and abandoning the victim, Ukraine.

It is devastating. Seems like this was Trumps plan and the meeting with Zekensky was a setup so they could blame it on him.

It's appalling. I really hope that Starmer doesn't keep trying to buddy up to him and I would like to see the ridiculous state visit invitation rescinded. It should never have been issued.

I genuinely think he's a Russian asset, I think it's worrying that we share so much intelligence with the U.S. We are on the brink of the possibility of a very different world in future, militarily, financially and morally. I just hope Europe pulls together and stays strong.

Me too. He thought he could bully Zelensky into submission and divvy up the mineral spoils with Putin. He anticipated Zelensky standing his ground but he did not anticipate the outpouring and redoubling of Ukraine support both worldwide and within the US as a result of that shitshow.

I can understand why the invitation was issued as although I'm sure Starmer privately hates Trump, trying to maintain diplomacy to (a) encourage the US to act with integrity regarding Ukraine and (b) maintain UK and US relations for a future period when Trump's era is over, is important.

But I do wonder whether it should be rescinded now.

For me it’s not just terminating aid it’s the fact he ordered aid nearly at the border to Ukraine to turn back. That’s fucking malicious, and nothing to do with money saving. He’s a despicable piece of shit.

Something tells me that whatever Trump does (or tries to do) is just showing off for the press. Surely things like that have to be put through congress/senate/whatever first? In a democratic manner? He can't singlehandedly "order" things?

Iirc, executive orders can be challenged in the courts but that takes time and money.

Technically no, he can’t cancel aid approved by congress. He has though. Actually stopped it, not said he’s going to. And what can anybody do?

It IS scary but I'm so glad Europe is standing firm and recognising that appeasing Putin is NOT the way to secure the safety of Ukraine and wider Europe.

We need to be able to defend ourselves without relying on the US. I know not all Americans think like Trump but he is the one in power for the next four years and he has made it clear that he thinks we're all too far away to care about.
