AIBU to be utterly horrified that the US has cut off military aid to Ukraine?

I was hoping that it was mostly just bluster from Trump. But we've woken up to the news that he has actually done it. He's literally swapped sides in the war and is now standing with the aggressor, Russia, and abandoning the victim, Ukraine.

At least some Americans are speaking out against the decision:

Ukraine war latest: US pauses military aid to Ukraine as EU chief says Europe is 'ready to step up'

Meanwhile, Russia says Donald Trump's move is "the best contribution to the cause of peace".

No, no peace deal in sight yet, alas.

But a proposal for a 30-day ceasefire which Ukraine has agreed to. Let's wait on hearing from Russia.

Just as importantly, the US has agreed to reinstate the intelligence support it suddently cut from Ukraine, and also reinstate military aid to Ukraine.

The language of the ceasefire proposal is also a great step forward for the Trump administration, as it acknowledges that Russia is the aggressor and that Russia needs to change its actions.

yes thats certainly better

Russia was always the aggressor, @PerkingFaintly, and the inclusion of this does no more than state the obvious, but it'll disappoint those insisting Trump's some kind of Russian agent

FWIW he's not my idea of a diplomat either, but if he manages to get the job done it'll be a damn sight more than anyone else has managed for years.
However given Russia's behaviour it's very much a case of "let's wait and see" at the moment ...

The attacks on Ukraine cities have also intensified the last days.

Russia don’t seem to be on board, as predicted. ‘Putin aide dismisses short term ceasefire with Kyiv, saying it is ‘nothing but temporary reprieve’ for Ukraine. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/live/cgj5w6veqw6t

Edited

I can't imagine why anyone expected his reaction be any different and quite frankly I have thought the last few days of frantic so called 'diplomatic intervention' was in the end going to be totally pointless and at times came across as slightly hysterical and naive? 🤔
Putin is sticking to the same excuse that Netanyahoo has shamefully used since horrifically violating and destroying Gaza and it's people, in that 'they (the Israeli's) have a right to defend themselves'!! Irony doesn't even come close and I don't think it's part of their vocabulary!🙄
Putin's 'reason' for invading Ukraine was based on a historical agreement part of which was that Ukraine should not ever be allowed to become a member of the EU or NATO...There has obviously been discussion regarding both of those things happening but the general concencus seems to be that Putin was just simply looking for an excuse to invade and that seemed justifiable in his warped mind.😏
He's out of the same mould as Trump in that he's a narcissistic, megalomaniac, dictator and nothing will change in Russia while he is still in power...😱

DuncinToffee · 13/03/2025 17:02

A narcissistic, megalomaniac, wannabe dictator.

Trump's a dictator? 🤔

Do you not think so? He seems incredibly autocratic and very dictatorial to me.

He still doesn't accept the 2020 result, do you?

Petuniaspetal · 13/03/2025 19:12

Yes he is a dictator. If you think otherwise then you are fooling yourself.

dictator is someone who has absolute power — or who at least behaves as if they do by bossing others around. In government, a dictator is a ruler who has total control over a country, with no checks or balances to prevent abuse of power.

I think this pretty much encapsulates what trump is about. He has isolated free press coverage. Sues or legally threatens anyone who has reported on or objected to his activities. It seems he or his sidekicks are physically threatening his opposition too.The Constitution is being trodden over and he is deliberately tanking the economy to enable his billionaire colleagues to deepen their pockets. He has permitted musk to take over American communications systems, ( no more verizon), SpaceX, the FAA and his cars...,( although that isn't exactly booming at present.)
No 'business man' worth their salt would allow one man to dominate so many industries if he goes down, they all do. The most farcical thing I can see is that trump is literally robbing the poor to give musk billions upon billions of dollars. He just so happens to have convinced the less mentally agile that that is how it should be.

Ps look up why musk is dismantling all these groups ...most of them were investigating him for dubious business practices, sexual discrimination and the like. That's why he said before the election when talking to not hannity, the one who left fox can't remember his name, ( the pro putin Russia one 🤔) that he would be in jail if trump didn't win.
So even if you don't believe all the other stuff do you want the guy who has blown up 2 space craft in the last few weeks taking over NASA and your airlines ......because that's what's next.

democratically elected dictator? 🤔

How you got to power is not what makes you a dictator it’s how you wield that power.

Trump’s comments today on Canada (“an arbitrary border”) and Greenland (“maybe more soldiers go there”) is EXACTLY how Putin talked about Ukraine.

As my daughter (currently studying A level History) likes to tell me, Hitler was democratically elected.

LastRoIo · 14/03/2025 23:01
