AIBU to be utterly horrified that the US has cut off military aid to Ukraine?

I was hoping that it was mostly just bluster from Trump. But we've woken up to the news that he has actually done it. He's literally swapped sides in the war and is now standing with the aggressor, Russia, and abandoning the victim, Ukraine.

At least some Americans are speaking out against the decision:

After the amount of hatred levelled at Trump over the last months I'm not surprised he has decided not to play the game any more.

LOL!

Absolute loony toons.

”Hate” from where exactly.

To which Vance has added this:

https://bsky.app/profile/newseye.bsky.social/post/3ljk3ly6iuk2g
NEW: JD Vance describes UK & French troops in Ukraine as “20,000 troops from some random country that hasn’t fought a war in 30 or 40 years”.
Spits in the face of UK & EU troops that died supporting the US in Iraq & Afghanistan.
So revealing. The Atlantic alliance & “special relationship” is dead.

“Random countries”

”Not fought a war in years”.

Yeah so British supporters of MAGA - what say you?

I am sorry but I have never in my 50 pus years on this earth read so much crap and seen so many hysterical posts as on this thread. its bloody ridiculous.where on earth are you getting your bizarre ideas from?
President Trump is posturing and making a very valid point to the world,us included, cannot you see that?He is taking a stand and a valid one at that that America is not the saviour of the world especially financially. Why do you all expect that country to finance everything? America owes no country anything, and why should the President and citizens of America be subject to such disrespect? Aid has temporarily been suspended. This is to force the hand of the little man running round the world with his hands out in his action man clothes demanding every other country finance his every whim whilst billions of pounds has gone "missing". Nobody, not one single country,us,France, anyone can go into this with alleged peacekeepers or boots on the ground without America no one, you should remember that.No American backing No dice and no one can move and no peace. Whilst our Pm is rallying leaders of nations no one has the money.weapons or troops to move an inch without America. Trump is forcing the hand of Zalensky to negociate. As for being a russian plant well ffs grow up.This war will be stopped round a table not on the battlefield as zalensky would like glorified by dead soldiers on the ground. I would step back, calm down and have a chill about which scenario would play out the best for everyone.

That’s an interesting take, the US don’t actually rule the world you know, whatever that hideous orange moron thinks.
You seem to be completely ignorant of Putin’s hand in all this, there is credible evidence of Russian interference in the US 2016 election and the Brexit referendum in the UK, and you believe the best scenario would be to allow him and Trump to call the shots, because they don’t have ANY ulterior motives at all do they? 🤦‍♀️
You also underestimate how much Trump is goading China, you ignore them at your peril.

Mumof2girls2121 · 04/03/2025 12:53

No im not, you can’t keep pouring money down a black hole if the countries leaders aren’t prepared to negotiate.

sweetgingercat · 04/03/2025 12:55

Ukraine got rid of it's nuclear arsenal after the breakup of the Soviet Union. They did so only after being assured that Russia, US and UK would guarantee their security in the Budapest Memorandum.

After Trump's monumental fuck-up this weekend, no country will ever agree to relinquish their weapons again, nuclear or otherwise.

The security that we relied on and the world as we know it has changed, almost overnight and Nato is already dead in the water.

It would be comforting to think that Trump, Musk and Vance are an aberation, that could be overthrown, yet they received backing and approval from a supine Republican party and a voting stupidity majority of US citizens. Dark times indeed.

"Hysterical" is a misogynistic term to use for women discussing politics. No-one is asking America to fund "everything" but they are part of NATO and NATO countries are under threat also if Ukraine isn't defended.

Also, the UK backed up the US in the Iraq war, so yes, they do "owe" us.

Please provide links for "billions of pounds going missing".

And Afghanistan.

Vance also dismissed Starmer's and Macron's efforts as " peacekeeping assistance from "some random country that hasn't fought a war in 30 or 40 years". Although he later tried to deny he didn't mean these countries.

This has sparked some passionate responses from London. Really disrepectful of countries whose soldiers fought and died alongside the US in wars they started.

Really apprehensive about where all this is headed.

JD Vance trashes Starmer and Macron’s Ukraine peacekeeping plan – POLITICO

It is so disrespectful of those who died and their families. Utterly reprehensible.

Vance is an absolute turd.

You mean Ukraine should negotiate with the Russia that already waltzed into Crimea and took it? That they should have more? And what would stop them going for another bite of the cherry after that? Or looking next to Poland? Or Slovakia? Or Finland? Or half of bloody Europe.

No.

It is sad - and scary - to see that the vast majority of Americans don't seem to care. No mass demonstrations against Trump essentially proposing to capitulate to Putin and leave the frontline of the free world in deep shit.

I’ve seen the figures, and no, Ukraine weren’t. The idea Zelenskyy is pocketing the money has been thoroughly debunked. Stop trying to justify Trump.

I don't think anyone is saying it's Zelensky pocketing it all but Ukraine has had huge problems with corruption and although they are really moving forwards they are still way down the table.

'According to the most widely cited source—the annual ranking of corruption by Transparency International (TI)—Ukraine has scored poorly for decades. As late as 2016, amid major anti-corruption reforms, TI’s survey still judged Ukraine to be as corrupt as Russia. The most recent TI index suggests that Ukraine has made some strides since then, but it still ranks 104th among 180 countries. Denmark is ranked first—meaning that it is perceived as cleanest—while Russia ranks 141st.'

'Last year, Ukrainian authorities opened a criminal case against Dmytro Firtash, an oligarch also wanted in the United States for corruption, alleging that his group embezzled $484 million from the Ukrainian state treasury in a scheme involving gas transit fees.'

I'm not pro Trump by any means though, voting in a narcissistic megalomaniac is never a clever move in my book. That doesn't mean though that we should pretend Ukraine is squeaky clean.

Well you have to choose your priorities. At this rate, if the rest of Ukraine is invaded by Russia it will go down from being 104th out of 180 countries to 141. And a cluster of other East European countries and Poland will be next in line for Russia's special operations.

I suppose that's a good outcome in your book?

Notonthestairs · 04/03/2025 13:06

Trump has regurgitated every Putin talking point - Zelensky is a dictator and should hold elections, Ukraine caused the war etc. He may as well have been reading from a Kremlin prepared script

Putin and Trump are working for a common aim. US financially benefits 5x the aid they've provided. Russia gets land and the opportunity to rearm whilst interfering in any future Ukraine election.

Why would anyone rely upon the US now?

The Americans have convinced themselves that they rule the world and unfortunately are swallowing all of Trump’s garbage.
What they need to be considering is Trump’s treatment of China, the US are insignificant in terms of firepower compared to China, he could well be leading them into a fight that they definitely wouldn’t win.

Tigergirl80 · 04/03/2025 13:14

He’s an absolute tw*t I wouldn’t usually say this about someone but that person that attempted to assassinate him and that other man got killed instead. That should have been Trump and the way he was celebrating afterwards because they weren’t successful. No condolences to the man’s family that died him and his brainwashed minions that voted for him absolutely disgust me.

Time for Europe to step up. It will take years, thousands of boots on the ground and billions of pounds/euros to conduct a land war with Russia.

Nobody has said they are squeaky clean, Z said that himself in the article that was linked!
Trump has repeatedly said they have given 360b but won't substantiate that figure! I have seen plenty of trump supporters say they have paid 350 , he's stolen money, massive house in florida, some shit about diamonds. On top of the dictator, they started the war crap.
How much more do you need?
What do you think of Russia?

They don’t care, as it’s miles from them. Why would they.. .?

They have problems of their own, unrest, homelessness , no good medical care, vast swathes of their society locked up for being different

southerngirl10 · 04/03/2025 13:18

So much BS flying around about how Europe will defend itself now that Trump is pausing Zelensky's money.

It's western propaganda.

Russia hasn't been able to get out of The Ukraine for 3 years. How the hell is it going to take on the whole of western Europe if it suddenly defeated The Ukraine?

Long range missile, my a**e. He would have used them by now. Besides, the west have them too, we seem to spend on defence here in the UK.

Bleekers · 04/03/2025 13:20

It is a good that Europe/UK are stepping up.
Realising that Europe/UK Expect USA to handle security.

Don’t think it was a deliberate strategy, but do see that US is expected to step in, yet get criticized endlessly for stepping in

Makes me think of like how your kids expect you to pay for everything, even after you’ve supported them for 20+ years.

nuned · 04/03/2025 13:22

@FavouriteFilms my thoughts exactly - why would you want a full on war with Russia ?

We are completely fucked if that happens.
