AIBU to be utterly horrified that the US has cut off military aid to Ukraine?

I was hoping that it was mostly just bluster from Trump. But we've woken up to the news that he has actually done it. He's literally swapped sides in the war and is now standing with the aggressor, Russia, and abandoning the victim, Ukraine.

At least some Americans are speaking out against the decision:

Ukraine war latest: US pauses military aid to Ukraine as EU chief says Europe is 'ready to step up'

Meanwhile, Russia says Donald Trump's move is "the best contribution to the cause of peace".

@cardibach well. They have Constitution, they have guns (not a fan of). But, they might put the two together eventually. Whatever he does now, on a broader scale with tariffs (which will make things more expensive NOT for China, but for the average Joe), layoffs, warming up towards russia, is not republican, is not democratic, and it WILL come bite him in the ass. There was impeachment attempt already, there were trials - and people who initiated this are still there.

Yes. Amazes me that all the ‘right to guns to defend ourselves’ people seem to have forgotten what the second amendment is for. Sadly I think the open carry nuts are all on his side.

This. Russia has supported his business endeavours for a long time.

Ablondiebutagoody · 04/03/2025 12:18

It's shit for Ukraine but Europe/Nato have been taking the piss regarding defence spending for decades. We prefer to pump money into welfare.

Europe should have seen this coming. Trump was moaning about it during his first term. I mean look at Trudeau, talking all supportively whilst simultaneously running down defence spending to 1.4% GDP. It's pitiful. Time for others to step up and stop telling the US what they should spend their taxpayers money on whilst refusing to do the same.

I have been crying all morning. Just WHY?

🇺🇦💪🥰

Because evil always triumphs. It always has and it always will. All we get are brief periods of respite until the next atrocity surfaces. It's sickening. To suddenly be facing a major enemy to the left and right of us is sobering. My heart goes out to the Ukrainians and their beautiful country.

After the amount of hatred levelled at Trump over the last months I'm not surprised he has decided not to play the game any more.

Cause and effect. You can’t behave hatefully and not expect to be hated. Look at his words and actions even before his re-election. He is the reason he’s hated. You can’t blame people who hate him.

Personally, I think core Trump voters are generally as thick as shit. They wouldn't see it, and probably wouldn't care.

There must be other floating voters though who were taken in by his bullshit and are regretting their choice now that reality is starting to set in. There must be! Surely! Please tell me they don't all support this arsewipe unquestioningly!!! ☹️

To me these voters are like our 'thick as shit' ones who voted for Brexit.

I am sorry but I have never in my 50 pus years on this earth read so much crap and seen so many hysterical posts as on this thread. its bloody ridiculous.where on earth are you getting your bizarre ideas from?
President Trump is posturing and making a very valid point to the world,us included, cannot you see that?He is taking a stand and a valid one at that that America is not the saviour of the world especially financially. Why do you all expect that country to finance everything? America owes no country anything, and why should the President and citizens of America be subject to such disrespect? Aid has temporarily been suspended. This is to force the hand of the little man running round the world with his hands out in his action man clothes demanding every other country finance his every whim whilst billions of pounds has gone "missing". Nobody, not one single country,us,France, anyone can go into this with alleged peacekeepers or boots on the ground without America no one, you should remember that.No American backing No dice and no one can move and no peace. Whilst our Pm is rallying leaders of nations no one has the money.weapons or troops to move an inch without America. Trump is forcing the hand of Zalensky to negociate. As for being a russian plant well ffs grow up.This war will be stopped round a table not on the battlefield as zalensky would like glorified by dead soldiers on the ground. I would step back, calm down and have a chill about which scenario would play out the best for everyone.

"Hysterical" is a misogynistic term to use for women discussing politics. No-one is asking America to fund "everything" but they are part of NATO and NATO countries are under threat also if Ukraine isn't defended.

Also, the UK backed up the US in the Iraq war, so yes, they do "owe" us.

Please provide links for "billions of pounds going missing".

Vance as POTUS will be no better, probably worse if that's possible.

He doesn’t have anywhere near the popular following that Trump does, so I’m not sure he’d last long. I expect he’d be taken out of the equation along with Trump, though.

Yalta · 04/03/2025 12:21

Time for Europe to step up. It will take years, thousands of boots on the ground and billions of pounds/euros to conduct a land war with Russia.

Or just take one man out of the equation

Not sure Trump & co. will be happy to vacate their seat after four years .... I think they're here to stay ...

Vance will be next and hw many Trump kids are there.....?

It’s been obvious that all Trump’s moves have been to further the interests of Russia for years.

The baffler is why the American electorate didn’t see it.

Same reason the english voted for brexit

Exactly. I was a remainer but I do know a few Brexshit voters who are disillusioned with it and would vote differently now.

Ex-puritans who thought CofE was too fripperous, and potato farmers whose crops had fallen foul of blight, and whose English landlords had ignored, 'settled' America.
(I am aware that native people's were there first, but they, like the Aborigines, have been marginalised, othered, and sent away from mainstream life)
Their descendants voted for Trump. That would be ok, if only those in the US suffered. Sadly, this collective insanity that caused trump to become president, affects the whole world.

nuned · 04/03/2025 12:24

Do we actually want a full on war with Russia ?

We are going to get nuked.

I for one, don't want a war. I'm not willing to die for Ukraine.

Totally justified amount of hatred levelled at Trump based on his actions and words. He has never played the game.

It IS scary but I'm so glad Europe is standing firm and recognising that appeasing Putin is NOT the way to secure the safety of Ukraine and wider Europe.

We need to be able to defend ourselves without relying on the US. I know not all Americans think like Trump but he is the one in power for the next four years and he has made it clear that he thinks we're all too far away to care about.

Europe isn't doing anything. Warm words aren't what's required here. It's military power and we don't have any because we've been sponging off the US for decades. If our electorates had prioritised defence spending over welfare, things might be different, but we didn't, so can't really be moaning that US taxpayers don't want to foot the bill any more.

PerkingFaintly · 04/03/2025 11:40

To which Vance has added this:

https://bsky.app/profile/newseye.bsky.social/post/3ljk3ly6iuk2g
NEW: JD Vance describes UK & French troops in Ukraine as “20,000 troops from some random country that hasn’t fought a war in 30 or 40 years”.
Spits in the face of UK & EU troops that died supporting the US in Iraq & Afghanistan.
So revealing. The Atlantic alliance & “special relationship” is dead.

From the Vice President of a country that hasn't won one since the War of Independance. Joining in when the it was clear which was the winning side doesn't count.

JazzyJelly · 04/03/2025 12:27

If there was any uncertainty that Trump is a Russian asset, it's gone now. And America as an ally with it. All we can do is hope Europe (and perhaps Canada, Australia, New Zealand etc.) rally round and support Ukraine.

On a side note - What an odd choice of words and grammar from the pro-Trump poster.

He’s not posturing, he’s acting.

Despite what he’s telling you, Europe has given more to Ukraine than the US.

Zelenskyy wasn’t disrespectful.

No money has gone missing. Debunked misinformation.

Churchill wore military dress during WW2 when he visited, for eg, the White House. Was he a ‘little man…in action man clothes’?

It may be true that American aid makes it more likely to succeed at peacekeeping - but remember there was an agreement with Ukraine when it gave up nuclear weapons. They (and the rest of Europe) are not wrong t9 expect it to be upheld.

Some reputable people have said Trump is too closely tied to Russia and always has been.

The best scenario for everyone is the one where Putin isn’t emboldened and is made to stop his invasion of a sovereign country. It’s even best for the US.

Does that cover all your ‘points’?

valder · 04/03/2025 12:27

Maybe if the US economy tanks and people's standard/costs of living hugely deteriorate, then the worms may turn.

The person in the street is not all that involved in wars and espionage and Project 25 and NATO etc. But they are very cognisant of the cost of living. They were promised more money in their pockets if Trump won.

If that doesn't happen very soon (and many Americans don't get the potential impact of tariffs on their pockets yet), well that may turn things around. Protests etc. Bad publicity. Bad vibes. I don't know, just thinking out loud.

It's the economy Stupid.
