Am I being a massive bloody prude or is this the hill to die on?

We have a 4 children. 2DS aged 24 &21, DD1 who is 13 and dd2 who was a surprise is 4.

DD1 is very into Taylor Swift, Sabrina Carpinter, Charlie xcx etc. she 14 and is obsessed.
I'm happy to let her listen to whatever (within reason)

As a family we have a shared Vinyl player that is DH's pride and joy. Each child wants to buy albums for the vinyl as they like the sound of it and whoever chooses the records on a Sunday gets to have them playing through Sunday dinner etc.

Oldest DD's birthday is coming up soon and she wants as part of her presents the Charlie XCX 'brat and it's complicated' release on vinyl and I said yes but Charlie xcx has released this vinyl album with white powder inside the record that moves around on the vinyl player and it's meant
To be like a bag of cocaine.

DH thinks it's hideous and sends the wrong message coming and I'd usually disagree and say things have changed since our generation but I think this is awful

If our daughter is correct then lots of her yr 9 friends will get a vinyl copy of an album where this is white powder inside the record that moves around when it's played?

Am I out of touch? I just think this is Insane

Although sung repetitively I'm now glad my niece knew all the lyrics to Leaving on a Jet Plane by John Denver.

I had to look up the lyrics as I was wondering whether John was singing about sex or drugs....🤣

I agree on the vinyl. Get the normal version.

But the thing about the lyrics...come on, please. Unless there are lots of 60+ year olds on this site, we've ALL been exposed to completely inappropriate lyrics and I'm sure for the vast majority it doesn't seem to have had any lasting impact.

Unless you're going to only allow your child to listen to Kids Bop, then I'm afraid they're going to be exposed, even if they only listen to the radio edits.

( @Saggyknickers yes I remember that song! Although I don't think I heard the non-edit version very often lol!)

Erm, I'm 63. I was a punk / post-punk. One of my favourites was "Orgasm Addict" by the Buzzcocks, amongst many others. I can assure you that people in their 60s have heard a multitude of references to sex and drugs and also took part in both. While I'm not keen on the quoted lyrics, I'm not sitting in a rocking chair knitting beige jumpers. Stop it with the casual ageism!

TempestTost · 11/02/2025 17:26

Buy her a Justin Townes Earle album. Much better Sunday music, and you can point out that there won't be any more since he ODed on a minuscule amount of coke that was laced with fentanyl at the age of 38.

JustSawJohnny · 11/02/2025 18:01

Sound like a really pathetic attempt to appear edgy. Not a great choice for someone with so many young fans.

The lyrics aren't great either, obviously. That said, I grew up on a diet of punk and Gangsta rap and I never turned to rioting, heroine, weed, guns or strippers.

My 11 year old DS loves Kendrick Lamar and I won't be stopping him from listening or going to see him live.

Of course, there will be conversations around language, but kids know what is and isn't appropriate in general conversation. Compartmentalising this stuff is a part of growing up, IMO.

I think saying no to that version is perfectly reasonable, and that's what I would do

But also here's a sampling of the lyrics

(Ayy) Ooh, these bitches, we tied
(Ayy) Art is not a competition
(Ayy) Rating go up when the clothes come off
(Ayy) But a real bitch come when the dick goes up, like
(Ayy) Ooh, these bitches rip off
(Ayy) Wish they could be OG, but they not
(Ayy) We going psycho, we going off
(Ayy) Yeah, me and Charli, we the party girl gods
(Ayy) Oh baby, you mad watchin' me win
(Ayy) Do it again 'cause I'm Kesha, bitch
(Ayy) Makin' me sick, nominated
(Ayy) All the motherfuckers better be prayin'
(Ayy) Singin' my song, singin' along
(Ayy) TikTok bitch 'til the kingdom come
(Ayy) Give 'em a hit, they can eat shit
(Ayy) Choke on my name when you suck on my dick

So I'm not sure where the surprise is coming from TBH.

Edited

Straight out of Shakespeare.

At one time the Sex Pistols were banned in case they brought down the establishment and ended the rule of law as we knew it. Now they are classic rock and played on Radio 2.

Yep and flogging butter.

Funkyslippers · 11/02/2025 20:12

I always cringe when dd (16) plays Chappell Roan in the car. She's a very talented lady but the line "knee deep on the passenger's seat and you're eatin' me out" amongst others has me clutching pearls

easypeasylemonn · 12/02/2025 09:25

I think it's fine to listen to the music but the record is a bit iffy.

Unfortunately most music even Taylor swift "sends the wrong message" so personally, I wouldn't restrict it.

Yeah, I skip a few tracks on that CD when my DD (12) is in the car! I’m bi and think it’s great to have young lesbian representation in music, but some of the more graphic lyrics definitely aren’t suitable for younger kids.

It’s great that women don’t feel they have to always make pretty-pretty music any more, but it makes it difficult playing some albums… eg. I really like “Gasoline” by Haim, but that’s on permanent skip too when DD is in the car 🤣

I'd never heard of that song by Haim but the lyrics seem OK, unless there's a hidden meaning that I've missed....!

Afterrain · 12/02/2025 18:08

I assume some are sold without powder.
My DH would be livid if any white powder got on his beloved turntable.
It would damage his vintage LPs!
His precious first editions from the 70s 80s 90s.

GoldOP · 12/02/2025 19:08

Parents will always be shocked at the lyrics of present day music, my mum turned top of the pops off when Madonna came on singing like a virgin 😂
My kids are older teens, ds likes US gangsta rap with some very crude lyrics and dd likes Sabrina and Charli xcx. I prefer dd’s choice of music tho the lyrics do make me cringe a bit when I hear the explicit versions as opposed to radio edit (Sabrina and her arriving at the same time and the thermostat at 69 😂)
In your situation I’d buy your dd the vinyl version without the fake coke and let her play it when your 4 year old isn’t around (not Sunday dinner suitable then!) even if you don’t buy the vinyl she’ll still listen to the songs on her phone

Gingernan · 12/02/2025 19:25

Crikey I can never understand what they are singing/ rapping about anyway! Admittedly my hearing isn't great! Nasty lyrics! I had no idea!
(Having said that I used to enjoy listening to my youngests Eminem cds)

Shotokan101 · 12/02/2025 19:27

Anything to do with public figures or "influencers" legitimising drug use is a hill to die on - good for you - stick to your principles.....

TBH, I'm surprised that it's allowed to be marketed like this - unfortunately I can't figure out who you/we can report this to, surely promoting drug use in such a fashion can't be OK?

pebbles8811 · 12/02/2025 19:51

@GoldOP bed Chem by Sabrina is a tune I’m 36 and it’s one of my faves 😂

also @Joulesdog that’s tame compared to the Saltburn vinyl that looks like cum inside it but I totally understand at that age it’s inappropriate to have

my own music tastes at that age we’re rap music so khia’s my neck my back and ludacris what’s your fantasy we’re in rotation back in the day god knows what my mum must have thought 🤣🤣

WisePearlPoet · 12/02/2025 20:08

CrocsNotDocs · 11/02/2025 04:16

I would die on this hill. Anything that promotes drug use in my household is banned, particularly stuff like this that’s trying to be edgy and cool. Don’t care if I’m an old-fashioned fuddy duddy- seen too many young people over my life destroy themselves with drug use and most of them used the “soft” drugs like weed and coke.

Coke is a Class A drug, there's nothing soft about it.

Wow, isn't that the perfect example of misogyny. People who write stuff like that should be taken down a dark quiet alley and beaten until their closest friends and family can barely recognise them, and they can't sleep for a fortnight because it is so painful to lie down.

Haha 😆 some of the lyrics sites don’t seem to have the full version. There’s a line “you needed ass, what’s wrong with that”; and others about being in between her legs on the kitchen counter going slower and faster. Not to mention the chorus has the repeated line “I wanna get off” (and she isn’t taking about the bus stop, IYSWIM!)

That’s way worse than writing a couple of songs about coke, mate.

Thesquaregiraffe · 12/02/2025 22:04

I’ve consulted my DS aged 13 on this. He is actually a massive vinyl fan and thinks nothing of spending 45 minutes or longer flicking through the records in HMV.

He has said he absolutely can’t stand Sabrina Carpenter for a few reasons but mostly down to how she comes across in interviews. When it comes to Charlie XCX, he says musically she’s better but he doesn’t listen to either of them avidly.

He’d rather Blur and the Arctic Monkeys with a mix of Metallica and Radiohead.

When it comes to white powder inside a record, I had to explain to him the connection. But he thought that having a record with stuff moving around in it would “super cool”. He’d have any artists special edition record due to it being exactly that - a special edition.

Not sure this helps at all - but I never, in a million years, thought I’d be going to HMV in 2025 to buy vinyl again with my teenage son 🤣

Nope.

find some age appropriate material on the damage cocaine trafficking has done to communities in Colombia. They need to realize this is not cool and should not be normalized.

LIJ · 12/02/2025 23:18

Get the standard version and stick to your guns. Don’t make it easy for these evil actors to get inside your house or your daughter’s head. Have higher expectations of her.
I have lost , as in they are dead, one 25 year old Nephew to Heroin, an ex A student and a Prefect and now his 32 year old Brother is going the same way.. fast., a 17 year old Niece to the same and 3 cousins. And they all started with weed, MDMA, cocaine, crack etc as it was cool. It’s not cool to get addicted. Peer pressure is horrendous. Give her clear boundaries and right now the paramount one is that this “white powder ” version does not come over your threshold. EVER. Rant over!!!

Bugbabe1970 · 12/02/2025 23:22

Why on earth are you allowing your child to listen to this shite!

Buffs · 12/02/2025 23:39

My 16 year old son listens to truly shocking music on Spotify. Strangely,he is a complete prude in real life. Much better behaved than I was at his age.
