First we get that alarm, now Tesco is closed tomorrow. It's the end, isn't it?

I do hope all of you in the affected areas manage to get through today without incident.
I'm only in a yellow warning area so only really relating to the neighbours not securing their bins issue, but I can imagine it's probably somewhat more scary in the red areas.

Parky04 · 24/01/2025 08:02

Yes, we will all die at some point. Some sooner than others. On the balance of probabilities, a mumsnetter will probably die today.

FFS. Is this life now?? Everything is weaponised now, even the bastard weather which has ALWAYS been crap in this country. It's winter and yes, sometimes storms and bad things happen. They always have. Check historic records. I wish people would take no notice of this bollocks and just get on with their lives and stop acting like meerkats, bobbing about looking for the next thing to panic about. I think some people just enjoy the drama tbh.

About 15 months ago we were under a red weather warning for Storm Ciaran. Our home was so badly damaged that we only moved back in last month and as a community we were incredibly lucky nobody was killed. Cars were literally thrown about and roofs flew off. I think the warnings are appropriate personally.

Thoughts with everyone in the red areas. Batten down and stay safe.

HelpMeGetThrough · 24/01/2025 08:04

Well, we're doomed here, catastrophic storm damage already.

The wheelie bin blew over.

Darling it's only Tesco, Waitrose, Fortnum's and Harrods ae all open.

Pretty sure Waitrose isn’t open. Harrods and Fornums are open because they’re in London …

I think it was...a joke?

Almost as bad as all the people coming onto this thread to say 'yes, everybody dies at some point, durrrr'.

HelpMeGetThrough · 24/01/2025 08:11

Pretty sure Waitrose isn’t open.

They've shut every Waitrose in the country?

Perhaps they don't want the Tesco riff-raff coming in.

You sound like a conspiracy theorist. It's a severe weather warning.

Tesco are considering the safety of their staff, schools the safety of children and staff and rail and bus the safety of all users. Makes sense.

Maaaate. Come on… check out ma tin hat, aye?

Northumberland and its wild out there now

Woke up to school closure alert at 7am. Would have preferred it last night before everyone was ready to go but there you go.

Same here.. wonder if all the schools have had to close?

Anywherebuthere · 24/01/2025 08:21

Yes we are. When our time is up. I don't believe we'l get an alarm/phone notification to notify us.

Midnightlove · 24/01/2025 08:26

Arwen. Right down the East Coast. Flipped over a load of caravans at a site near Hartlepool
https://www.metoffice.gov.uk/about-us/news-and-media/media-centre/weather-and-climate-news/2021/rare-red-warning-issued-for-storm-arwen

Yes arwen was bad! I don't think anyone expected it due to the hype we're use to from the media. Went to work and couldn't leave as I couldn't even walk outside without being physically blown away 🫣 roofs damaged all over and so many trees down

RedHelenB · 24/01/2025 08:28

Yes, everyone will die.

A large number have according to the county council website.

I think it would make more sense to close across the board to be honest. There's no point in people having to travel on our rural roads when it's like this.

GirlOfThe70s · 24/01/2025 08:34

110mph winds expected here, all buses, trains and ferries cancelled. All schools and council offices closed. Tesco closed. 'Danger to life' red warning. The wind is so strong at the moment I can't open my back door with the force of the gust.

IAmADescendantOfSweepTheSqueakyLegend · 24/01/2025 08:36

RedHelenB · 24/01/2025 08:28

Yes, everyone will die.

But are you sure, though? What if, on the very second of our so-called 'death', we are reincarnated, free to experience everything this wondrous earth has to offer yet again?

Well, yes, practically speaking, we are going to die at some point. However I have no idea what you’re on about, Waitrose is fine and no phone alarms have sounded in Greater London. If the Russians were going to go for somewhere, not sure they’d pick Bristol…

IAmADescendantOfSweepTheSqueakyLegend · 24/01/2025 08:37

Also, our fucking fence is down. And it wasn't meant to hit proper before 10am. It's a nice fence, too.

This is also where working remote and hybrid is a great thing as I can stay safe at home and still get my job done. All public transport is off, too dangerous to drive.

MajorCarolDanvers · 24/01/2025 08:42

Fife here and it’s wild here already.

already wind is gusting at 60mph and temp is feels like -12C

we've still got a couple of hours before it really hits

They’d pick where I am, Trident is just up the road. It’s getting crazy already!

Viviennemary · 24/01/2025 08:45

Do you mean all Tescos. Or only the red alert areas. All this scaremongering is getting a bit much. My bin has probably fallen over. But I can deal with that.

Probably not all of them? But my local one is. Fuming.

Are we all sure that we will still get the high winds? In the midlands my area forecast is only for wind F4 gusts to Force 6.
Much of Wales the forecast is reduced compared to yesterday.

But Midlands is only yellow zone isn’t it?

JaneOfGaunt · 24/01/2025 08:53

Our massive glass recycling bin has blown over already and there are bottles all over the road. And we’re still in the very early stages!
