First we get that alarm, now Tesco is closed tomorrow. It's the end, isn't it?

Tesco is shit anyway. All that clubcard nonsense.

Don’t forget the food tastes like cardboard. Tescos is a loose loose situation.

A piece of metal from a building flew off in high winds about three years back in Ireland and hit me in the face. I have the scar to prove it and I’m still nervous in high winds

so yeah, Im not so glib!

That’s why everyone in Ireland wears a flat cap.

You’re right. Very loose loose. Only loosers shop the tbh.

Yes, we're all going to die, we don't know when or how but it's fact.

Well maybe you think it's funny but for some of us with bowel diseases, it's pretty fucking vital. And bidets aren't much of a thing in this country.

Even if I didn't have a bowel condition, it's pretty grim to not have access to toilet paper!

Plus don't you realise, there's going to be shortages for a couple of days as there's been no deliveries today.

So maybe those people weren't as hilarious as you think, and were displaying foresight?!

I've had IBS for thirty years, thank you. That's how I know that using a bidet attachment or handheld device specially made for that purpose is a good way to go.

People were stockpiling loo roll like crazy, even before we heard anything about possible shortages, and the majority of people don't have bowel diseases. It was a weird reaction which I still think is a funny little foible of human nature! 😂 Armageddon threatens, and we all feel better by having loads of loo roll in stock!

You need to lighten up a bit!

What makes no sense is that some people didn't get the point why people bought plenty.

If you had Covid you couldn't go out....no one knew how long they'd be stuck in for.

@Treesinmygarden too:

Well, since we're being all serious instead of taking my comment in the light-hearted way it was meant, I now realise, on reflection, how incredibly selfish the stockpilers were. Yes, maybe people have bowel issues....and couldn't get any loo roll because others had swiped it all. There is no excuse, because running out of loo roll isn't life-threating. There's kitchen roll, newspaper, and multiple washing options. Wipe with a wet washable cloth, the bath, the shower, rinse with a jug, and more.

If nobody had stockpiled, everyone could have bought a pack at their weekly shop and no one would run out. But when people begin to stockpile, it creates a domino effect, because if some stockpile then everyone else has to as well, in order to be sure of getting some.

When I shopped, I took only what I needed for myself, such as one loaf of bread, even though the shop wasn't sure of their deliveries.

No chance….no one’s going to die, yet.
We are up in the Frozen North. Happens all the time….
Crazy weather, Tesco closing and having to stockpile

The school estate in Northern Ireland has been neglected for years. The buildings are literally falling apart in some cases. I'm not surprised the decision issued to close all schools yesterday.

The massive honking alarm on your phone that scared the shit out of most people. Me, anyway.

Most of the country didn’t get that alarm……

Even if schools were palaces they would have been closed, it wasn't safe for anyone to be out yesterday unless they had to be. Until pupils and staff can teleport to school, they'll be closing on days like that regardless of the state of the buildings (which, yes, is shocking in many cases).

Edited

I didn't have to stockpile. I buy loo roll in bulk from a wholesaler's anyway, and I had only recently stocked up. Pardon me if I don't see the funny side, and if I don't want to wash my arse 10 times a day, because of the frequency that comes with my severe bile acid malabsorption. I thought for 30 years I had IBS until I got my diagnosis. You can't put kitchen roll in the toilet (and how much would any of us have at any one time?!) and I don't have a ready supply of newspapers because I don't buy them. I couldn't wipe my backside with them anyway because it gets very tender with the repeated wiping!!!

Running out of toilet roll is literally a phobia of mine.

I think people just panicked. It was a strange and difficult time.

I hear you on the arse soreness caused by the bile. What helped me is spreading a layer of thick ointment on my a*us. It really helps protect the skin. I use a brand called Aquaphor. I'm in the States these days so not sure if we have i in the UK. But I bet Vaseline would work.

I can't believe I just wrote that. 🙈 TG this is anonymous!

I don't think it had anything to do with the condition of the school estate, and everything to do with the safety of pupils and staff. It would have been unthinkable if someone had died or been injured because they were told they had to go to school. EA alone employs around 40,000 people - think about children, parents, caregivers - how many people did that keep off the roads yesterday?

Education has been broke for years. Never gets enough in the budget.

Yes I know, a young man very tragically.

What I am saying is that lives may potentially have been saved because schools were closed?

Undoubtedly. It was very dangerous during our red zone, went for a drive today to see damage and countless trees are down, roads still needing cleared and power and comms (including FM radio) outages. I'd have been worried sick if my daughter wasn't home with me, very few vehicles out.

They undoubtedly were. You only have to see the number of trees down to imagine the death toll if we'd all been carrying on with our day as normal.

Re stockpiling, surely we learned all about this with covid. The empty shelves aren't caused by the few people buying ridiculous amounts. It's all of us popping in and picking a few bits up a little earlier than we normally would. We usually buy bread on Saturday morning, this week we bought it on Thursday so we would have it in for lunch on Friday (not usually home). But of course the shops aren't set up for all the Friday and Saturday bread buyers to show up on Thursday so they run out. Similarly everyone who's going to need loo roll in the next few days picks up a packet or two in case they're stuck at home. It's very normal behaviour.

Plus supply chain shortages after the event. I had a Sainsbury's delivery booked for today and I got a text yesterday to say it was likely to be quite a few things short. In the event it was only cat litter (and I've more left than I realised) and Bombay Sapphire gin (😒)!!
