To use the men's toilets when the ladies is busy

A poster on another thread suggests this is unreasonably but I don't see why.

Largestlegocollectionever · 22/01/2025 10:54

Because:
1 they’re normally smelly and dirty
2 you’re invaded men’s space and privacy, if we don’t want men coming into ladies spaces, why should ladies come into their space, especially seeing as they get their dicks out in the urinals!

Catza · 22/01/2025 10:54

I wouldn't use the "open plan" one as I think it is unacceptable to walk through the parade of men with their privates out to get to the cubicle but no problem using the single occupancy one. In fact, most of them are unisex nowadays for better or worse.

BlueRobins · 22/01/2025 10:55

they may smell, but not always eg supermarkets, but these days why not, a toilet is a toilet

UncharteredWaters · 22/01/2025 10:56

Would you be happy if a man used the ladies on this basis?

absolutely not!

Eachpeachpears · 22/01/2025 10:56

Think about it the other way. If a male were to use the female toilets the arguments would be as follows:
-domestic abuse victims may feels vulnerable
-survivers of sexual assault may feel vulnerable
-why should one make the other more busy and therefore less accessible.

The arguments are the same.

Furthermore the male toilets are much more open than female which would obviously lead to sight of private areas which males may not feel comfortable with sharing and not should they

yipyipyop · 22/01/2025 10:56

It's invading men's space. Just wait your turn

JacquesHarlow · 22/01/2025 10:57

I don't think it is invading "Men's spaces" because I would dispute if there was such a thing. Female-only spaces exist because women are statistically more likely to be raped and threatened by men. Reverse the polarities so to speak, and a woman is less likely to threaten a man when he's standing with his penis out at a urinal.

So I don't see a problem with this @Everythingisnumbersnow but I'm fascinated to see the MRAs come out in force about "men's spaces". Fuck that - the stats on violence show otherwise. It's ok for us women to have spaces , and men not to. I know my DH would show mild curiosity or surprise if he saw a woman come out of the toilet, but he wouldn't feel threatened. That's the difference.

yipyipyop · 22/01/2025 10:58

@JacquesHarlow so because you think women aren't threatening it means they get to bulldoze their way in? No it doesn't work like that.

What is this "men's space" thing?

Like I said just now - I really don't understand this.

Men have the right to wee in peace, but they also statistically feel less threatened by us in their space. Whereas a man in a woman's space, well the statistics tell us what we need to know.

Why does everything now have to be utterly equal despite the stats?

Tell me about "bulldozing". What a fascinatingly emotive word.

How pray does a woman "bulldoze" her way into an open space, nip into a cubicle, come out, wash her hands and then leave?

pinkwaffles · 22/01/2025 10:59

If there were two individual lockable toilets, and the women's was occupied, I might use the men's in that situation.

I wouldn't go in the men's if it was a large one with urinals and multiple cubicles.

If women are entitled to privacy from the opposite sex in their toilets, men, including elderly men, are entitled to that same privacy in theirs.

TankFlyBossWalkJamNittyGrittyIAmFromAMidSizeCity · 22/01/2025 11:00

You don't see why walking onto a toilet where men have their cocks out at the urinals would be an issue?

If it was all cubicles that's one thing, but men's toilets aren't all cubicles.

DangerMouseAndPenfoldx · 22/01/2025 11:00

How on earth can it not be obvious to you that some men may be uncomfortable with a woman bathing into a space where they are exposing their penis?

I know some people love to think that all men want to expose themselves, but actually think about you husband, son, father, brother, decent male friends. Do you not think it might make them uncomfortable?

And of course, as other posters have already pointed out, if women want privacy in women’s spaces then we should afford men the same rights.

vivainsomnia · 22/01/2025 11:00

Oh well if statistics are the only matter for consideration...

I think there are quite a few men who would feel uncomfortable with women walking into the urinal area and seeing their genitals.

Of course they're not the only matter for consideration.

Don't mock my line of argument just because you don't have one yourself?

OhTheOrdinary · 22/01/2025 11:01

You don’t see why Hmm

Mrsttcno1 · 22/01/2025 11:05

I wouldn’t do it and I don’t think it should happen really. Most women wouldn’t be happy with a man in the ladies toilets with the excuse that the men’s had a big queue so I don’t see why the men’s should be any different, we all want that private space. Plus the fact it’s urinals, I know the men I know would feel uncomfortable with a woman walking in.

Everythingisnumbersnow · 22/01/2025 11:06

UncharteredWaters · 22/01/2025 10:56

They never need to because the queue is always for the ladies.

OP posts:
Bjorkdidit · 22/01/2025 11:06

It depends on the situation and the relevant toilet provision.

If there's a short queue for the women's YABU to just go into the men's, except perhaps if it's a dire emergency where you cannot wait.

However, some times the men's is completely empty and there is a queue for the women's that would take absolutely hours for your turn and at these times yes, it is reasonable to use the men's toilets.

This has happened when I've been to see female comedians and the audience has been 95%+ women. Once the queue realises that they won't get to the front of the queue before the end of the show, let alone the end of the interval, they start to use the gents.

Everythingisnumbersnow · 22/01/2025 11:07

Ps as a sometime man's loo interloper I can confirm many don't have urinals

OP posts:
Everythingisnumbersnow · 22/01/2025 11:07

I notice some women won't even go in one of the fully enclosed cupboard ones if there's a pic of a man on the door.

OP posts:
DaisyChain505 · 22/01/2025 11:07

If you wouldn’t want a man using the women’s toilets when you’re in them the same should apply in the reverse situation.

Women don’t get to preach about wanting to have safe spaces away from men and how men should respect women’s privacy etc and then go storming into a safe male space where men should have privacy.

common sense.

GrumpyPanda · 22/01/2025 11:08

yipyipyop · 22/01/2025 10:56

That argument will be just and fair as soon as we've achieved what Americans call potty parity. To guarantee equal wait times for both sexes requires a distribution of space between 2:1 to 4:1 in favour of women, to account for additional usage needs (menstruation!) and also the sheer mechanics of women's clothing and anatomy. To achieve this, many US states have decades ago cemented this requirement in law. This side of the Atlantic, in contrast, the best we can hope for is 1:1. I do get the privacy argument, but find it problematic while men remain as egregiously overserved as they are today. What you're advocating for is that men get to both eat and keep their cake, and there won't be any improvement, ever.
