Gov refuses home office investigation into historic child sex abuse in Oldham

I've just read on x that Jess Phillips has formally declined Oldham council's request for the HO to investigate the grooming gangs in Oldham. Why on Earth would they do this? Apparently JP says it should be a local investigation? Clearly that is a conflict of interests and if the council are asking for help they should?

The only link I can find other than x is GB news (apologies).

Labour REJECTS Oldham's call for Government inquiry into grooming gangs scandal

Safeguarding Minister Jess Phillips has said Oldham should 'take its own approach' instead

Ime when a story is only being reported by GB News and amplified by far-right agitators, there is more to it. This is of course a distressing event for the girls involved, but the the government have to look at wider considerations.

These are historic events dating back decades, which have already been investigated. What we don’t want is far-right activists jumping on these for their own racist and xenophobic ends and leading to community and national tensions.

These offences took place decades ago and have been impartially investigated away from the political arena. It’s not surprising that the far right are reluctant to move on, but it is now time to do so. Let’s not give the thugs any further ammunition.

Upstartled · 02/01/2025 12:32

The thing is, Farage isn't saying anything that hasn't been said before. Obviously. But the Labour party and the Conservative party have studiously ignored it with the kind of dispassionate callousness only achievable when the mass media doesn't give a flying fuck.

Then the left should stop being so fucking cowardly and ignoring their own heretics and come to the bloody table.

Tell the victims that, they are still being victimised and have no voice. What an utter disgracful post.

Upstartled · 02/01/2025 12:36

And this industrialised grooming of working class girls continues to this day in the same manner. It's not an historic quirk.

BIossomtoes · 02/01/2025 12:38

Meanwhile in the FT.

@TreeSquirrel

No it's not been properly investigated the social worker said it's all still happening and justice has not been served.

The absolute last thing we all need is a fear of far right thugs then actually fearing this abuse is still being perpetrated and vulnerable girls lives are a living hell.

CandlesOrangesRedribbon · 02/01/2025 12:40

@Sunworshiper perhaps but surely it epitomises all that has gone wrong with the entire situation.

Aduvetday · 02/01/2025 12:44

It’s the fact that NO-ONE has done anything to help these girls which will lead to a very far-right government next time. People are sick of all the mainstream parties. People throwing slurs around will just drive people away from the mainstream parties.

People who want it to go away because the awkward truth feeds a right wing narrative are part of the problem and complicit in the mass raping of children.

That's a valuable update, thanks. Maybe directly upload the ss as people don't always like clicking on links.

Only if your focus is on the spat between Elon and Starmer.

If you care that Oldham council has asked for help and that Jess Phillips has rejected the plea and told them to get on with it at a local level and you want to know how that position is tenable, then it's not useful.

itsjustbiology · 02/01/2025 12:50

I also wish to add that there would be little point of an enquiry now as the practices are still very much going on. Nothing has changed, girls are still being abused in horrific ways. It all needs to come out,who knew what and when, why they decided to kick the can down the road to deal with it another day i.e never..and I will confess I am and I suppose, would be considered as far right as you can be in my thinking of this matter and other matters too. I am not ashamed to say those young CHILDREN,TEENAGERS should be the ones being offered the most protection and care with justice for what has happened to them above and beyond any cost of protecting a community that is full of sick individuals who do this in the first place for sport. The decent members of the community at large have remained silent all along knowing what is happening.Everything about that is wrong in my view.Everything.

I tried. It wasn’t having it. If you’d like to help out I’d be very grateful.

But people with local knowledge say it's still going on.

Your post says it all. Nothing to see here, time to move on, sssh now.

I think it’s perfectly reasonable that the government don’t wish to hold a national inquiry with all the publicity and cost that would involve, and opportunity for the far right to distort and exploit it would bring.

There has already been the 2022 Jay report which included Rotherham.

Sunworshiper · 02/01/2025 12:55

Any here we go kick the girls down the road with the political football a game of whataboutery, blame the far right.

Its obviously the far rights fault grooming gangs are still roaming the streets and abusing mainly under privelaged young white girls.

Some people disgust me.

Too expensive, too hard, too political, too historic, too current, already done, no point, too dangerous, too national, too local....so many cowardly words.

The worst thing about the industrial rape and torture of vulnerable working class girls at the hands of monetised and sadistic grooming gangs over decades is that it makes the successive failure of labour and conservative governments look bad.

LlynTegid · 02/01/2025 13:01

It's not an inquiry we need. It is adequate policing and a functioning justice system. I'd also have taxi and minicab licensing that prevents someone just choosing the easiest one to get a licence, so that there are proper checks and common processes.

Also specific police forces. South Yorkshire Police who also lied about Hillsborough for one.

itsjustbiology · 02/01/2025 13:03

Wider considerations? What like ?? Shutting our mouths and letting them get on with it? Yep let them do what they like to these children and young women? State allowed rape of kids as to not upset someone? Is that really what you are suggesting or would you rather stand up call it out and offend the animals that do this? I would suggest there are and should never ever be any wider considerations given to anything or anyone except these victims. No one or nothing deserves consideration beyond the welfare of these victims.

OneAmberFinch · 02/01/2025 13:06

I think the reason it is being suppressed is because it would make the Southport riots look like child's play if people read the details and realised the sheer horror of it.

I even think "child rape gangs" might not go far enough. "Child vicious-torture gangs" perhaps?

If Starmer and Labour don't want this to fall into the far right's hands they have an easy solution, announce immediate prosecutions and deportations.

To be clear: I think everyone who has tried to be a whistleblower on this since the early 2000s is a hero. This should get as much press time from the mainstream press as the infected blood scandal, Post Office, Grenfell etc. And acknowledged by Starmer when he lists scandals where victims have been denied justice.

OneAmberFinch · 02/01/2025 13:08

The Conservative party who were in power for 14 years and didn't deport some of these criminals also can't escape scrutiny.

DerekFaker · 02/01/2025 13:09

TheHardestWalk · 02/01/2025 09:17

As someone who was generally aware of the scandal and cases, some of the details coming out have sickened me. It is almost unimaginable depravity.
it is astounding, nay disgusting there isn’t to be a wider investigation into the events and those that sought to cover them up. Agree with a pp who said it is frankly sinister.
(Really horrific written details contained in the sensitive image).

That is honestly one of the worst things I've ever read. Jesus Christ.
