Gov refuses home office investigation into historic child sex abuse in Oldham

Perzival · 01/01/2025 23:45

I've just read on x that Jess Phillips has formally declined Oldham council's request for the HO to investigate the grooming gangs in Oldham. Why on Earth would they do this? Apparently JP says it should be a local investigation? Clearly that is a conflict of interests and if the council are asking for help they should?

The only link I can find other than x is GB news (apologies).

Labour REJECTS Oldham's call for Government inquiry into grooming gangs scandal

Safeguarding Minister Jess Phillips has said Oldham should 'take its own approach' instead

It’s the fact that NO-ONE has done anything to help these girls which will lead to a very far-right government next time. People are sick of all the mainstream parties. People throwing slurs around will just drive people away from the mainstream parties.

People who want it to go away because the awkward truth feeds a right wing narrative are part of the problem and complicit in the mass raping of children.

'People are sick of all the mainstream parties.'
You are absolutely right.
It's not just this current, appalling issue, where nothing was done for decades, but all the other failures of 40 years of policy.
The fools who want to politicise everything and point fingers at each other without looking at their own failures are to blame as they have directly given root to populist parties by their own incompetence, lack of humility and introspection.

It is exactly the same thing that has happened in the US with the recent reelection of Trump, apparently much to the surprise of the Democrats. I said the same thing on a thread on here shortly afterwards and it didn't go down well with a couple of posters. The Dem's response, calling people racist/ stupid is part of the problem (if you assume that Trump/ Farage/Musk, etc are a problem).

The Conservative party who were in power for 14 years and didn't deport some of these criminals also can't escape scrutiny.

I think Politics should not take any part in this at all, both labour and the conservatives, police, social workers and councils ect. all equaliy guilty of ignoring the issue and brushing under the carpet.

What I do have an issue is are where people try to place the blame on political groups as a way to avoid tackling the issue as it may upset too many people. Bollocks the victims need justice and it needs to be discussed in the open blow the whole dam thing wide open.

itsjustbiology · 02/01/2025 13:12

I genuinely cannot believe someone has called for wider considerations to be adhered to regarding these children/teenagers/VICTIMS on what is a website called mumsnet..Where the over riding participants are indeed parents themselves.. I feel sick to my stomach such a suggestion has been made. I am sincerely beyond believing someone could believe that to be the best way forward..

No-one is saying they should. However, it’s these comments that are the problem. People don’t want to raise it because Labour. Every government has failed these children and continues to do so. Everyone should be held accountable. It’s splitting it into Tories vs Labour which will guarantee you will have Reform in some kind of power next time. My bet is a coalition.

People need to step away from their political bias and look at what has happened.

Yes, in defense of the Safeguarding Minister who doesn't want to get involved when a council has asked for state support in the pursuit of, erm, safeguarding.

rainingsnoring · 02/01/2025 13:19

I've been saying since, I think Nov 23, when Farage started blatantly promoting himself again with that NatWest bank business that he was re-entering politics, that the next election would be won by Labour but that after that, Farage would likely be very prominent. Once he became the Reform leader, it became even more clear. I wouldn't be at all surprised if the Tory party splits; they have been so divided for so long.

rainingsnoring · 02/01/2025 13:22

Exactly @Aduvetday

We all have our preconceptions and biases (me included) but we have to try to do as you suggest.

LlynTegid · 02/01/2025 13:01

It's not an inquiry we need. It is adequate policing and a functioning justice system. I'd also have taxi and minicab licensing that prevents someone just choosing the easiest one to get a licence, so that there are proper checks and common processes.

Agree about the policing and justice system, but immproved licencing will make no difference if it isn't monitored and there continues to be no way to be certain who's driving the taxi

Last week they sent one out for me which didn't even have taxi plates - doubtless someone's brother or cousin who was "helping out" - and needless to say they're untouchable over this too (when told, the office didn't give a stuff and naturally the local authorities won't touch it)

Sunworshiper · 02/01/2025 13:35

If any one knows Jess Philips or even if you read this thread jess.

How about you go on tonight and tell us all how you are going to tackle this then and calm this storm if you have nothing to hide. You have all day to confer with your boss.

Why is nobody worried about the fact that an enquiry was done in 2022 but the findings weren't implemented?

D23456789 · 02/01/2025 13:51

I'm feeling disturbed by what I have read on here; that the abuse of these children should be forgotten about because of wider political sensitivites. As a mother, its pretty sickening to be reading this sort of stuff on here.

Atissues · 02/01/2025 13:54

This isn’t about Left or Right. It’s about Pakistani men gang raping and pimping out young girls and our government/councils/licensing authorities/ social workers/police/the community ALLOWING it to happen and hiding the details from the public. Be they right wing, left wing, east wing or west wing a cover up for ANY reason isn’t right.

As a Country we have failed 250,000 teenage girls and arrested some of their parents for trying to protect their kids.

It’s bloody hard to get a rape conviction in the U.K. and even paedos walk free now. This is a predominantly female and parent website why wouldn’t we be angry about it?

Good on Elon Musk for shining a light on it. Good on reform and the spectator and GB News etc for talking about it.

If JP isn’t happy to investigate ask Lowe to do it - he seems keen to get to the bottom of it.

THIS @user1471516498
Inquiries done over and over and over
We don't need another inquiry

Everyone saying "this will inflame community tensions / play into the hands of the far right / comes from that right-wing hate rag / maliciously paints ethnic groups in a bad light" etc

There is a tweet from Tom Holland doing the rounds which is basically: "the hardest thing about some coverups is that many of those who did it, did it from noble intentions"

But if there is one place that should be the most angry when #BeKind leads to the abuse of young children and girls - surely it should be Mumsnet?!

itsjustbiology · 02/01/2025 14:00

There is one person who fought and fought for this to try to bring justice for these victims and he is in prison now. He spoke the truth and they tried to break him. That will never happen.

ChippedIkeaFurniture · 02/01/2025 14:00

Do you think if this were thousands of white middle class men being round up, gang-raped, and tortured it would be hushed up ‘for the greater good’?

Edited

That Tom Holland tweet has been around for ages, but I still cannot comprehend him finding that acceptable to say.

According to Holland, it was 'noble' to prioritise good racial relationships over stopping the abuse of young girls. I do not have words for how awful that position is.

Discussed in House of Lords asking what is being done to help the victims and extrapolated numbers - I do not know when this was said as there is no date on it.

itsjustbiology · 02/01/2025 14:08

I say let communities be inflamed. Surely deep down they need waking up.Let them be uncomfortable for their abject silence in knowing and allowing there people to do this. They need to acknowledge the damage that has been allowed to happen. They know exactly whats happened and turned the other cheek. We, meanwhile allowed them to dictate. Our corrupt legal system and Government have as much blood on their hands as the perpetraitors do.

DerekFaker · 02/01/2025 14:08

TreeSquirrel · 02/01/2025 12:53

I think it’s perfectly reasonable that the government don’t wish to hold a national inquiry with all the publicity and cost that would involve, and opportunity for the far right to distort and exploit it would bring.

There has already been the 2022 Jay report which included Rotherham.

This is exactly the sort of attitude that led to those girls being utterly failed in the first place.

Disturbing, yes, but sadly utterly predictable
As we're seeing, for some there really isn't ANYTHING which shouldn't be covered up, just so long as it protects "community sensibilities" - which ironically is largely how this horror came to happen in the first place

stonejam · 02/01/2025 14:10

Musk is a massive instagtor of causing trouble. I find it strange that X is full of racists these last few weeks and turning more and more far right in their views. and very innocent majority are going to pay for a horrible minority deprived Asian grooming gang. It’s almost like wants to start trouble and wanting Tommy Robinson freed. Laurence fox and his equally hateful priest friend Calvin Robinson are causing racial bait again. They want trouble. From the tweets I’ve seen many don’t care about the innocent girls just spewing out hateful at all Muslims. Targeting a certain group. Where do we draw the line with these people ? Justice must be done and cover up exposed but I’m seeing a lot of hate and racism on there too

How many people do you think it takes to rape quarter of a million girls?

Edit..., not people, men. MEN. How many Asian men?

Ime when a story is only being reported by GB News and amplified by far-right agitators, there is more to it. This is of course a distressing event for the girls involved, but the the government have to look at wider considerations.

These are historic events dating back decades, which have already been investigated. What we don’t want is far-right activists jumping on these for their own racist and xenophobic ends and leading to community and national tensions.

These offences took place decades ago and have been impartially investigated away from the political arena. It’s not surprising that the far right are reluctant to move on, but it is now time to do so. Let’s not give the thugs any further ammunition.

“Wider considerations”

you sound just like the police who didn’t investigate because they didn’t want to “inflame community tensions”

moderate people need to talk about this and condemn it or you leave it to the right wing to be the only people doing so. I would also like to see a statement from community leaders condemning it and saying what they’re doing about identifying it within their communities and how they’re co operating with police.
