To tell DD off for vaping inside her hotel room?

MamaCroc · 15/12/2024 09:24

I’m away for a few days in London with DD (19yo). We both have separate rooms in the hotel. DD vapes (she never smoked before vaping so she’s one of those who just took up vaping unfortunately), I tried to get her to stop when she first started vaping last year but I couldn’t so I’ve just come to accept now that she vapes and that there’s nothing I can do about it. Whilst in London, DD has been telling me that she’s been vaping in her hotel room even though the hotel says vaping isn’t allowed in the rooms. I’ve told DD off this morning for vaping inside her room but DD says I’m being unreasonable to tell her off for it because there is no one else in her room besides her so she says it’s not affecting anyone else or causing any problems so she thinks it’s fine, I also told her that the smell will linger probably but she’s insisting that the smell will be gone before the next people check in to her room, she also says that she has vaped in hotel rooms before apparently without issue. AIBU to tell DD off for vaping inside her hotel room?

I know that I can’t stop her vaping altogether but I don’t think she should be doing it in hotel rooms when it’s not allowed.

No. Some hotels can detect vapes on their alarms. Premier inn have that and they have all the signs stating if alarm is triggered they fine you..
So she's not only being rude but could get you all in trouble. Want to vape?..go outside.

IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle · 15/12/2024 09:35

She should not be vaping in a hotel room. It's stupid and selfish. She may well set off the fire alarm or if the hotel notice the smell they can make her leave.

RollerSkateLikePeggy · 15/12/2024 09:35

I'd be making it very clear that any fine for vaping in the room is coming out of her pocket, and check what the fee is in the Ts and C's. Even in a premier inn the fine is £100 and could easily be twice the cost of a room rate if the hotel feels they have to deep clean and can't put someone in the room. Just because your daughter thinks no one else will smell it doesn't mean that's true!

HPandthelastwish · 15/12/2024 09:37

Well you are unreasonable to tell another adult off. Putting all the information to her, such as residue left on surfaces and smoke alarm being triggered so she can make an informed decision is fine but don't go on, she's an adult and didn't need to tell you in the first place

An adult acting like a child. Vaping is NOT allowed in hotel rooms and this little madam needs to stop doing it

FannyFernackerpants · 15/12/2024 09:47

People get very tetchy about vapes on here, much more so than people IRL so I expect hoards of posters telling you your daughter will kill them if they have to stay in the hotel room after her as they are just so sensitive to smells.
In reality the very worst thing she will leave behind is a slightly fruity smell, more than likely there will be nothing at all that people would notice.
Technically she is wrong to vape anywhere it isn't allowed but realistically she isn't doing any harm.
YABVU to 'tell her off' as she is an adult and will make her own decisions.

HPandthelastwish · 15/12/2024 09:48

Yes, but she is an adult and some adults do stupid things and she'll have to pay the consequences if she gets fined. If she were on a work trip rather than a personal one the same would be true.

A 19 year old is far too late to be "telling off" you needed to instil good boundaries and rule following in her as a child, if she's happy to flout rules it's too late to fix that via berating her now.

BlackberrySky · 15/12/2024 09:49

Whatever self-justification vapers use that makes them think the rules don't apply to them, they are wrong. Your DD has chosen to stay in a hotel room that doesn't allow vaping, and there she is vaping in it. Of course you're right to tell her she shouldn't be doing it.

Hopefully for the sake of future hotel guests she will be fined and it will make her think twice.

Onetimeonly2024 · 15/12/2024 09:53

Meh. She is an adult. Vaping doesn’t set off smoke or fire alarms and we’ve never been fined, because you simply can’t tell.

StrongandNorthern · 15/12/2024 09:53

People are so sanctimonious and judgemental!
I personally have never known a vape trigger a fire alarm. Maybe the large, belching out clouds of vapour ones would but not a standard small vape.
Nor do standard, small vapes leave a detectable smell behind.
She's alone in the room so not affecting anyone else.
So - I'd be fine with it.
She didn't have to tell you - you'd have been none the wiser.
She's honest and upfront ... and vaping ... not mainlining heroin.
There are worse things I can assure you.

KimberleyClark · 15/12/2024 09:54

She is being stupid, selfish and irresponsible.

ChristmasinBrighton · 15/12/2024 09:55

I don’t think you can tell her not to, but you can make it clear you will not be paying any fines.

Squishysquishmallow · 15/12/2024 09:56

We stayed in a Premier Inn once before a vvv early flight.
At 12:30am the entire hotel had to evacuate due to fire alarms being activated. This was caused by some idiot vaping in their room. 100s of people including small children were outside in their pyjamas and then we had to wait for the Fire Brigade to check the building before we went back in. Such a waste of their time too.

People are just becoming more and more selfish and entitled. Just because they cannot be arsed to step outside for a few mins to feed their ridiculous habit.

rosiethegremlin · 15/12/2024 09:56

Make clear any fines/problems are hers to sort out then leave her to it.

Spondoolies · 15/12/2024 09:56

I’m on the fence about this because I would want to follow the rules but people will be spraying all sorts of aerosols in the room, hairspray, deodorants, perfumes etc so I’m not sure what happens with vapes, it seems to dissipate immediately.

5128gap · 15/12/2024 09:56

You can tell her off all you like, but its obviously not going to make the slightest difference. Its highly unlikely there will be a residual smell, certainly no more than if someone uses a strong perfume. And if she doesn't blow clouds of vapour near the smoke alarm, she won't set it off. She knows this and so whatever you say, she will balance her own knowledge against the inconvenience of having to leave her room and stand outside in December. Personally I'd not bother making an issue of it. In the highly unlikely event she's 'caught' and told off by the hotel, well that's on her.

WatchOutForBabyHaggis · 15/12/2024 09:57

Yes YABU to 'tell her off' because she's an adult.

Sorry to kill the hopes of several posters 😅 but no, she won't be fined and no, she won't set the fire alarm off. And the next guests will have no idea there was vaping in the room before them.

thesunisastar · 15/12/2024 09:57

Lol at all the nose blind vapers saying that they do not leave any lingering smell.

You are deluded.

Fabulouslyunfabulous · 15/12/2024 09:57

We had a guest that vaped and it absolutely stunk.

Hopefully she gets fined.

WatchOutForBabyHaggis · 15/12/2024 09:58

#1 of Things That Didn't Happen right here 😂

MamaCroc · 15/12/2024 09:59

It’s a Premier Inn that we are staying in so she is 100% not supposed to be vaping inside the room.

OP posts:
Anothercoffeeafter3 · 15/12/2024 09:59

She would have to be vaping at a rate to set off the fire alarm it's no different to aerosols that people use. Never vaped but don't have a problem with other people doing it.

Rainbow1901 · 15/12/2024 10:03

How childish is she being? Taking up vaping when shes never smoked smacks of keeping up with her mates at the local club!! Vaping in her hotel room when they specifically request patrons not to do so is someone who thinks she can get away with it (like a child) so if she triggers the alarm she can pay the fine and deal with the unpleasantness of turfing every person out of the hotel because she was so ridiculous. Then she might begin to understand how to be an adult!!
