I'm a celebrity

I've watched a bit of it over the years.

I was watching a couple of this year's episodes, and I just thought that the trials have gotten so much worse.

Yesterday they had Oti mabuse, one of the contestants, stand in a sarcophagus. They poured sand into it, up to her neck, so her whole body was covered in sand, and she couldn't move at all.

She had a tiny head space for air. Then they filled that head space with giant cockraches, ants and large worms.

I was watching it and thinking,

"When did watching people being completely tortured on TV become acceptable."

Is it not going too far?

To which I don't believe I will get an answer. As there isn't one.

Exactly.

As much as I really want to stay on this thread, I have to go to bed as I have an early start tomorrow. Enjoy everyone. 👋

AITAH10 · 04/12/2024 23:31

The key distinction is they consent to doing these trials.

I personally think jumping out of a plane with a parachute would be torture but people pay good money to do it every day around the world.

Henrythehappypig · 04/12/2024 23:31

I thought they’d stopped trials where living creatures were getting hurt? Doesn’t sound like it from your description. I haven’t watched it since seeing that butler trying to swallow kangaroo testicles, I thought “has to be more to life than this” and turned it off.

It’s not as cruel as the early rounds of talent shows like BGT used to be. At least this lot have an existing profile and money. The deliberate humiliation of some of those talent show contestants was just awful. Wouldn’t let the DCs watch them.

Yeah it's gotten to a shocking level.

Like they had Tulisa eating two huntsman spiders this year.

Then they filled Oti up to her neck in sand, and poured giant burrowing cockroaches round her face .

It's bad.

Smoke and mirrors. It’s not a jungle, it’s a television set and outdoor studio. It’s a controlled environment with medics, safety staff and production professionals steering the story, which you’re clearly enjoying as you’re still watching- who do you want to win? Who do you want to stay in the luxury hotel once they leave the film set?

Yeah I saw that. It went right into her ear.

And the medic had to get it out.

I thought this was ‘I’m a celebrity ask me anything’ thread! So disappointed.

Ah, the thread now makes a lot more sense. A lot of critters in those other English speaking nations.

I haven't watched any full episode.

I just watched some recap videos and trials on instagram.

Mainly because I think Maura higgins is very funny, and some of her soundbites on I'm a celebrity - were popping up on my instagram feed.

But when I saw some of the trials,

I thought "This is just awful."

Yeah they really should allow ear plugs.

I agree with you. I don’t watch it because it’s so bad. I can’t bear watching what they’re put through.

Edingril · 05/12/2024 01:16

Mearabade · 04/12/2024 22:36

Well the producers suck people in with large amounts of money.

But my point is that torture should never be used for entertainment purposes.

It's a slippery slope.

They can say no, this idea that everything needs to be banned people are too stupid to say no is getting ridiculous

Maybe they need to teach brains in school

TempestTost · 05/12/2024 01:32

It all reminds me of the Stephen King novel, The Running Man. (The film with Arnold Schwarzenegger was not very similar if that seems a strange comparison.)

stormee · 05/12/2024 02:13

Gangs/mafia... take note. Stop water boarding, pulling off finger nails, breaking bones... send them to I'm a celebrity. ITV is brutal 😆

Mearabade · 04/12/2024 22:58

So what word would you use to describe being buried up to your neck in sand , and having thousands of bugs all over your face. Cockroaches going into your ear.

What word would you use?

Bushtucker trial.

Have you seen Danny, he bloody loves doing them.

KrisAkabusi · 05/12/2024 07:07

Mearabade · 04/12/2024 23:22

I think it is.

The contestants are screaming form genuine fear on the show.

People screaming in genuine fear on roller coasters and they've paid to it. Are they being tortured?

tuvamoodyson · 05/12/2024 07:14

Mearabade · 04/12/2024 22:35

So if I hold you down so you can't move , and pour cockroaches all over you, what would you call it?

…being paid massive amounts of money….

FatOaf · 05/12/2024 07:16

I've thought since the first series of Big Brother how strange it is that things that would - quite rightly - never be given approval for research are allowed to be performed and broadcast for "entertainment".

While I really couldn't care less what humiliations talentless nonentities submit to to extend their worthless careers, I am very concerned by how the public's taste for violence and torment is increasingly graphically indulged. People are no longer content with 24-hour-a-day fictional murder: they want to watch real suffering.

holju · 05/12/2024 07:17

I think it's sadistic and grim (particularly to the animals, who didn't choose to be on it) but that's why I don't watch it.

False.

Gotten has been in regular use 'in this country' forever - it's just that it's not used everywhere, and so some people have decided it's an Americanism and get all snobby about it.
