I'm a celebrity

I've watched a bit of it over the years.

I was watching a couple of this year's episodes, and I just thought that the trials have gotten so much worse.

Yesterday they had Oti mabuse, one of the contestants, stand in a sarcophagus. They poured sand into it, up to her neck, so her whole body was covered in sand, and she couldn't move at all.

She had a tiny head space for air. Then they filled that head space with giant cockraches, ants and large worms.

I was watching it and thinking,

"When did watching people being completely tortured on TV become acceptable."

Is it not going too far?

Not in the UK where the vast majority of MN lives.

I'm from the UK. I'm in my mid 50s. I have used the word all my living memory.

It is in use in the UK. Just not everywhere.

And how bizarre to claim it's 'not a word'. A word is a word. Jugador is a word. It's not an English word, but it's still a word.

Whaleandsnail6 · 05/12/2024 07:27

Of course its not torture...I think you are being a bit ridiculous op

Everyone who signs up for the programme knows what it entails. They have a choice as to whether they take part in the show or not before they even sign up

The trial is explained to them before they do it. They again are then given a choice as to whether they do any trial. They are not forced

They can then end the trial at any point.

They have the coice whether to take part in the whole thing and do it willingly for presumably fame and money and then once there the chance to win the whole show

If they didnt fancy going into the jungle, they can say no.
If they dont fancy the trial they can day no.

They are not exactly in desperate, vulnerable circumstances.

The only things I feel sorry for in the programme is all of the bugs and creatures that are made to do the trials. I imagine many end up dying.

RedRiverShore5 · 05/12/2024 07:30

They can get out of the trial whenever they want.

I think the OP might be Irish. Not sure if it’s commonly used there. Not that it matters anyway.

I think it's used in northern Ireland, as well as in Scotland and maybe Northern England.

I don't know about Ireland.

But it's also in the King James bible and in Shakespeare. I'm pretty sure that people in England are aware of the phrase 'ill-gotten gains'. And it is useful in that it can have a different nuance to 'got'. It's more continuous - 'As I got older' is very much past tense where 'as I have gotten older' includes the present.

I find the use of the word torture deeply distasteful. But I do hate what this show says about society. Happy to be thought a fun sponge, woke, humourless and anything else you choose!

I have to say I do agree with this post. 100%. No-one makes these people go on this show, and they are paid LOADS for it. I agree with the last bit too: it's not fair on the living creatures to use them like they do. Now THAT is cruel.

Nothing the humans have to endure is cruel, nor are they suffering, and it is certainly not 'torture.'

As many people have said, it's really disrespectful towards millions of people over the world who suffer horrific living conditions (and even torture) every day of their lives.

Sidebeforeself · 05/12/2024 10:56

Ursulla · 04/12/2024 22:47

It's not torture! They're not chained to a radiator in Iraq facing death. They're on the bloody itv with ant and Dec.

To be fair , being with Ant and Dec must be torture!

Funkyslippers · 05/12/2024 11:28

For a start, they often volunteer for the trials. And if i had spiders poured on me it might help with my phobia

'Nothing the humans have to endure is cruel"?

It's astounding how people adapt to see torture as normality.

Because it's on a tv show and the contestants are paid, they think it's OK.

If I put a child in a sarcophagus and poured sand up to her neck, so she can't move her legs or arms.

If I then pour giant burrowing cockroaches, and mealworms and ants all over her face.

And I make her scream.
She's screaming and I'm laughing at her.

Am I being cruel to that child?

i wouldn't mind doing that, knowing I can say no and earning more than many people do in several years of hard graft. They are not children so shouldn't be compared to them

Yea I agree they are getting paid.

But it's not about them getting fees.

It's that hurting someone and scaring someone shouldn't be entertainment at all.

Did you all see that Jane Moore who was a contestant in I'm a celebrity this year, posted a picture on instagram of her bra.

In the photo, Her bra is absolutely drenched in blood.

She said she woke up to find a blood sucking leech, attached to her breast.

For someone who objects to this programme so strongly, you seem oddly over invested @Mearabade. Maybe give it a swerve if it offends you.

I haven't watched it at all this year.

"If you don't like it don't watch it" is such a silly comment really".

It doenst matter if I personally watch a clip on instagram or not.

It'll still happen.

And what I wanted to talk about on here was -
why is it becoming acceptable to hurt people on reality shows.

As another poster wrote on this thread:

Some of the Asian reality tv shows are extremely bad to contestants.

A couple of this years episodes and Oti, so this year, make up your mind

TaylorBrown · 05/12/2024 12:28

I'm sure if I was getting paid for doing that I would do it. They signed up they know what could be coming whats the problem?

Garnetcherrycola · 05/12/2024 12:28

Oh for goodness sake. It's been going on for years, the contestants know what to expect and sign up, consenting to it. Prior to the challenge, they are told what will happen and if they want to go ahead. During the trial, they can stop at any given point. It's hardly abuse and torture 😂

The ants bite and hurt people.

One contrstant had a leech suck a load of blood out of her.
