Fireworks grrrrr

Cat won't move from hiding place - she's terrified. Baby can't sleep. They go off almost every night from October onwards.

Fireworks should be banned after 6pm. And further to that, while I'm here, they should be banned completely except if being sold for official displays. AIBU?

I suggest they be limited to 5th Nov and the Saturday before Guy Fawkes Night. Not allowed for any other festivals or birthdays or whatever until New Year's Eve. Possibly Chinese New Year. Otherwise it goes on and on and is too cruel to pets.
If you care, please write to your MPs and councillors and make them aware this is an issue.

It's a difficult one. I love them but used to have a dog who was terrified so I hear you too. The whole firework 'season' was geared to making sure she was ok. I have no idea how they can keep kids awake though, they aren't that loud - or my kids just slept through everything.

lasagnelle · 09/11/2024 20:41

Banned after 6pm?? I'd agree with 8 or 9 but a firework display that ends at 6 would be shit

Possibly Chinese New Year? How generous of you. And Diwali? No? Why not? It's more important than a Saturday before the annual celebration of someone not blowing up parliament

ilovelamp82 · 09/11/2024 20:46

After 6pm?? Eh? That's just weird. I think the weekend before the 5th, the 5th and the weekend after everyone should just get used to it. Beyond that I agree is annoying.

New Years eve? Lunar New Year? Diwali? All important to people more so than a Saturday before or after the 5th november which has no meaning other than being a Saturday near the 5th

Whatevershallidowithmylife · 09/11/2024 21:01

Licensed displays only think. Better planning, event and fireworks than you could possibly do at home (which is also much more expensive if you do it properly).

OppsUpsSide · 09/11/2024 21:03

It is tricky to co-exist with others yes, but what’s the alternative.
my pets don’t mind them, we’ve never acted concerned and funnily enough neither do they.

Thanks for that. Can you provide your list ranking the importance of events so nobody steps out of line again.

Yes, I agree. Genuine celebrations. I mean I understand every day for a full month can be annoying.

Diwali isn’t more important to me than Bonfire Night as I am not Hindu. Equally not concerned with Chinese New Year, both just mean an excuse for a takeaway. Not fussed by the fireworks on any of these occasions but if you want to put them in a hierarchy Bonfire Night wins. Other countries would disagree I am sure!

Outtherelookingin · 09/11/2024 21:11

It's not almost every night since October though is it 🙄 and they're not even that loud, definitely not loud enough to wake babies unless you have single glazed windows and it's all your neighbours doing large displays in their gardens all at the same time.

Rummly · 09/11/2024 21:12

Funnily enough, the neighbourhood dogs that bark every fucking day have shut up tonight.

Maybe there should be fireworks every day except a few days each year when the dogs can piss everyone else off?

It's not my experience either, but going by the amount of people that come on here to moan about it, I presume there must be some highly active areas of the UK for fireworks.

And some extremely thin windows

sprigatito · 09/11/2024 21:15

I heard some tonight, but I didn't feel the need to shit the bed over it 🤷🏻‍♀️ they're just fireworks. The collective hysteria over them is preposterous.

grumpypedestrian · 09/11/2024 21:20

They should be banned from public sale and limited to organised displays.

Anyone who disagrees has never seen how distressed animals get or the effect it has on the elderly or people with PTSD.

But hey, fun bangs are worth the upset as it doesn’t affect anyone you know right.

The elderly? What effect does it have on them?
Our local care home hosts a fireworks event every year... must be full of youngsters.

OppsUpsSide · 09/11/2024 21:28

Not being funny but every old person I’ve ever met is hard of hearing…

lasagnelle · 09/11/2024 21:29

If you buy a dog you are promising to keep it safe. Don't do it if you're going to be in an area with fireworks and they'll get so frightened.

XenoBitch · 09/11/2024 21:32

YANBU, there are some going off where I am right now. Thankfully my dog is not bothered by them.
They should be restricted to certain dates and times... and not sold to the public.

Inastatus · 09/11/2024 21:33

My poor dog has been a shivering, panting wreck every night for the last 10 days. We act normal, don’t make a fuss and have tried every trick in the book to help her but nothing works. She is lucky, she is safe inside, warm and protected but the other wildlife around us have to put up with being terrorised night after night just so we can have our ooo’s and aaah’s. There are plenty of lovely, quieter fireworks available but the Chinese imports with the huge bangs have become much more common.

Waffle19 · 09/11/2024 21:37

6pm is too early but I think there should be a limit on number days… tonight was the worst yet around here, every night for the last nine nights now our dogs have been terrified
