Fireworks grrrrr

Cat won't move from hiding place - she's terrified. Baby can't sleep. They go off almost every night from October onwards.

Fireworks should be banned after 6pm. And further to that, while I'm here, they should be banned completely except if being sold for official displays. AIBU?

You are kind of missing the point. It isn't fireworks v dogs per se. It is you choose to have a pet. I choose to have fireworks. One doesn't trump the other. If you want your choices respected you must allow others to have things they love.

I'm not missing any point, don't worry. Let's live in a world where everyone has what they love. But let's all compromise a little, shall we? Dog owners should be responsible. Drivers should only drive when they really need to. And fireworks should be limited to minimise public disturbance. That's how a civilised society works, no?

On a side note, here's what Google AI says about fireworks (and dogs kill people, I know I know):

Fireworks can have a number of effects on society in the UK, including:

Air pollution
Fireworks release fine dust particles that contain toxic metals and other harmful chemicals into the air. These particles can aggravate lung diseases and contribute to air pollution that can last for days.

Microplastic pollution
Fireworks can contribute to microplastic pollution in rivers, especially in cities built over water.

Litter
Fireworks can create a lot of litter, including non-biodegradable parts from the firework housings.

Distress
Fireworks can distress people and animals, including pets, children, and those with anxiety or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

Safety
Fireworks can be dangerous, especially at private events. People who have been injured by fireworks or know someone who has are more likely to support stricter regulations.

Anti-social behavior
Fireworks can be misused and lead to anti-social behavior.

The UK fireworks industry has taken steps to address these issues, including working with animal charities, providing education materials, and offering accredited training courses for firework displays. However, some say that the UK government could do more to enforce the existing legislation.

Dogs cause all of the above too.

HauntedBungalow · 10/11/2024 18:51

They also chew people's faces off.

They put fireworks through people's letterboxes?? Fuck me, where do you live?

Petition signed. Thanks.

A lot of cat and dog food is what's left over from humans. Soooo doing us a waste disposal service really.

It's really not. That's just what dog/cat people like to tell themselves.

It really is. I tell myself that because its true. A lot of surplus goes into pet food. I aren't making it up. Not all no. But I didn't say that.

Lungs and other organs, muscle, trotters, ears, noses. They're all fit for human consumption but we don't eat it, so a lot goes to pet food suppliers.

Sure, some does. But there are abattoirs full of animals being killed purely to go into pet food.

Ones that will not make the cut for humans yes. They aren't purposely bred for pets. Scrawny underweight cows which have served their life being milked and having their babies taken away again and again or sheep which have run their course giving us lambs to chop up in the spring. Chicken which have stopped laying. Pigs which are too old.

Why are they great?
Is it the noise? Or the colours?

OonaStubbs · 11/11/2024 01:35

Drone shows are better than fireworks in every regard.

CoeliacSpinsterMum · 11/11/2024 06:59

I actually really love fireworks :-) Just not when they're going off right outside my windows for hours.

XxSideshowAuntSallyx · 11/11/2024 07:07

I love fireworks but not when they're so loud my cats are shaking and hiding under the bed. I can't do anything to help them and it breaks my heart to see them like that. You can tell their scared by the size of their pupils and the fact they are physically shaking.

It would be fine if it was one night or even one weekend but there's no need to have them after 5th November.

DustyLee123 · 11/11/2024 07:10

We have had them every night since Halloween. It’s ridiculous.

ForMintUser · 11/11/2024 09:52

Well this escalated quickly and in some crazy ways!

Popping back on to add someone was setting fireworks off near us on Saturday, VERY loud and went on for a while, definitely not like the wee box of fireworks we had in the garden when we were kids! I’d have to agree things like that probably shouldn’t be sold to the public.

Would say I sympathise with not being a fan of our increasingly dog centric, I’m entitled to take it anywhere and everywhere mentality but some of the anti-pet comments on this are insane even for me.

What about my cats? What harm have they done to anyone? They're scared of their own shadows (and the wind). I've never seen them like that before, they were terrified. Even with windows shut the noise was loud, it made me jump on occasions.

When you have an animal that is shaking and terrified because of someone else's enjoyment maybe you'd understand.

Sounds like your cat's need to toughen up a bit lol

If you buy a dog you are promising to keep it safe. Don't do it if you're going to be in an area with fireworks and they'll get so frightened.

What a tit. Fireworks scare all animals wherever they are, not just dogs ..... humans are so entitled, most couldn't give a shit about other species dying of shock or having serious injuries from running away, just as long as their snotty little brats are happy. Please, as PP have stated I urge everyone to sign ans share this petition https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/700013

Petition: Limit the sale and use of Fireworks to licence holders only

Fireworks killed our mum, Josephine Smith. Her home was attacked using fireworks. We believe the use of fireworks after sale to the public cannot be policed. We think all displays should be licensed and sales limited to licence holders only.

@XLchihuahua - I’ve just read in Sky news that a baby red panda died of firework fright at Edinburgh zoo - choked on his own vomit 😢

I’ve signed and shared the petition.
