Fireworks grrrrr

Cat won't move from hiding place - she's terrified. Baby can't sleep. They go off almost every night from October onwards.

Fireworks should be banned after 6pm. And further to that, while I'm here, they should be banned completely except if being sold for official displays. AIBU?

New Years eve? Lunar New Year? Diwali? All important to people more so than a Saturday before or after the 5th november which has no meaning other than being a Saturday near the 5th

None should be allowed unless at organised displays

Talkwhilstyouwalk · 09/11/2024 22:32

YABU.....rightly or wrongly most people will care more about their celebrations than they do about your cat.

The world doesn't revolve around cats and dogs. Shocking, I know

No one is saying it does. But recognising the severe distress it causes is important. No one is saying stop fireworks, just limit them to organised displays when people can plan and medicate accordingly.

I find it hard to believe the random firework in parks and gardens are about the gunpowder plot.

Inastatus · 09/11/2024 22:33

@MummytoE - no, nor horses, donkeys, sheep, cows, birds, or any other animal really. Oh well as long as us humans are happy eh 🙄

grumpypedestrian · 09/11/2024 21:20

They should be banned from public sale and limited to organised displays.

Anyone who disagrees has never seen how distressed animals get or the effect it has on the elderly or people with PTSD.

But hey, fun bangs are worth the upset as it doesn’t affect anyone you know right.

Let's also ban dogs then while we're at it. They're the cause of alot of fear and distress. Also PTSD. Ooh what about Men. A man was the cause of my PTSD and I know I'm not the only one. Let's ban men! Cars too, they cause all kinds of trauma and misery. Every single day of the year .

MummytoE · 09/11/2024 22:41

The effect it has on the elderly?? What a strange generalisation

OonaStubbs · 09/11/2024 22:44

I think fireworks should be banned, full stop.

But dogs cause distress to people throughout the year too. Dogs kill a lot more people than fireworks do.

Men are not let off into the sky, causing a huge bang, and potentially landing on the rug of a horse who then suffers burns as a result.

Drone shows are far better than firework shows and the drones can be used again.

My dog is on my bed right now, and is causing distress to zero people.
Fireworks get set off in public. You can't light one and expect it to go off in just your garden.

Can you hear them?
Drones freak me out! I hate the noise they make, but if they are high up then it might be ok.

Mlanket · 09/11/2024 23:05

Tbf cats kill 160 to 270 million animals annually, a quarter of them birds in the UK, which is pretty shocking.

Cars kill millions of mammals, reptiles, birds including something like 40,000 plus deer.

So I don’t think firework related animal deaths will be motivation enough for any change.

Mlanket · 09/11/2024 23:06

Although I did think it was harder to buy them for personal use and some supermarkets had stopped selling them?

Lincoln24 · 09/11/2024 23:12

It's popular on here but I don't agree with licensing displays.
Who would process licences? Local Authorities? Chronically underfunded and likely to result in yet more bureaucracy, and applications by established displays being turned down.
Most organised displays round me are run by schools who probably simply wouldn't bother, so most displays would simply disappear.
It would just kill the whole thing stone dead imo (perhaps that's what some people want, but I don't think it's a fair or proportionate solution).

Just ban the sale of fireworks to the public. It would be that simple. Only people with a license could buy them.

Thelondonone · 09/11/2024 23:19

I think small dogs should be banned-the yappy little bastards. I get woken up at 5.50 everyday by my neighbours dog as my shit neighbour never addresses the yappy little thing. I love fireworks and would rather be woken by them everyday. Yabu

Yes but the point is this would cause an influx of licence applications. So who would process this? With what time and money?

OonaStubbs · 09/11/2024 23:21

Just ban all dogs and all fireworks and then nobody can complain, everyone will be happy. Fireworks displays can be replaced by drone displays and dogs can be replaced by robot dogs.

You hate dogs... we get it. Just don't get one, and let the people who have one, enjoy them.

No license for back garden displays.
Just large ones only, in an approved place, with an event that is advertised.
It would not be hard.

Banned after 6pm?? I'd agree with 8 or 9 but a firework display that ends at 6 would be shit

Why? Dark is dark.

mydogisthebest · 09/11/2024 23:26

I can't believe posters insisting they are not loud. They sound like fucking bombs going off and, yes, I have heard a bomb going off.

Quite what the point of fireworks that sound like bombs is I don't know but obviously the people letting them off are as thick as shit and don't give a fuck about any animals.

mydogisthebest · 09/11/2024 23:31

OppsUpsSide · 09/11/2024 21:28

Not being funny but every old person I’ve ever met is hard of hearing…

Well I am 70 is that elderly in your view? I have excellent hearing

BurntBroccoli · 09/11/2024 23:36

Yes neighbour had really loud fireworks that they set off bit by bit. Kept thinking it was over but no, another loud boom. Must have been very boring to watch.

Need banning except for professional public displays.

BurntBroccoli · 09/11/2024 23:38

Outtherelookingin · 09/11/2024 21:11

It's not almost every night since October though is it 🙄 and they're not even that loud, definitely not loud enough to wake babies unless you have single glazed windows and it's all your neighbours doing large displays in their gardens all at the same time.

The ones round here were over 120db. So bloody loud it shook my house.
