Fireworks grrrrr

Cat won't move from hiding place - she's terrified. Baby can't sleep. They go off almost every night from October onwards.

Fireworks should be banned after 6pm. And further to that, while I'm here, they should be banned completely except if being sold for official displays. AIBU?

Even if you don’t care about animals, the distress random fireworks causes to anyone with autism should be enough to ban sales to the public.

Not "anyone with austism" a lot of people with autism sure

InThePinkScarf · 09/11/2024 22:11

Couldn't hear myself think earlier they were so loud. People complain they have no money but they clearly have enough to piss it all up into the sky.
Totally getting on my nerves now. Sounds like bombs going off ever since 30th October.

But not most nights for 2/3 months.

That is ridiculous, it must be very location specific?

Where I live it’s been every night for the past two weeks.

I overlook a park and in previous years I’ve seen teenagers setting them off sideways. I narrowly avoided getting hit one evening while walking home. When I grew up we were forced to watch videos about people being mutilated by fireworks, I’m not sure if that’s still a thing but if not it should be.

I like them but feel bad for the pets and wildlife. I don’t think they should be on sale to the general public

StarDolphins · 09/11/2024 22:12

I’m agree op. My poor cat is beside herself. Honked x3 & is currently panting under the sofa. Keep it to 5th ffs. Goes on for weeks round here.

I do have sympathy for those with ptsd and anyone really if they sound like bombs

@XenoBitch - a bird of prey died of shock and another had a stroke in my local bird sanctuary.

That is awful Shock
According to some on this thread, you should move the birds to a remote island where fireworks wont bother you.
I am sure wildlife is not unaffected too.

It's not almost every night since October though is it 🙄 and they're not even that loud, definitely not loud enough to wake babies unless you have single glazed windows and it's all your neighbours doing large displays in their gardens all at the same time.

Yes. It really is most nights since October and trust me, they are close and the echoes are loud enough to shake the windows! Four solid hours tonight. I don't have single glazing but I do have rubbish windows. And I don't 'act concerned', but cats will be cats. She's a rescue kitten and has always been scared of loud noises. I just think it's selfish and the danger of any lunatic being able to get hold of them speaks for itself :-)

Fireworks are illegal in Ireland and it doesn't make a damn bit of difference. From mid September until halloween every year you have wankers setting off bangers and Fireworks every weekend night. This year was the worst ever, there was a lot very close to where we live. Dds dog is terrified and despite being on tranquilisers has been a quivering mess. I don't get the appeal of Fireworks at all, a big fabulous display i can understand, but a few random ones in someone's garden, why bother?

Rummly · 09/11/2024 22:16

I’m sure the local wildlife is dead keen on all the dogs and cats. 🙄

Well, using the logic on here, autistic people (and not all will be bothered by fireworks or loud sounds btw) can medicate, wear headphones and hide in a den, like people have to do with their pets.
Or, don't have sensory issues about sound, and live anywhere near other people.

Fireworks are optional too. In fact, they are pretty useless compared to dogs.

Unless it's an assistance dog

Cats poo in my garden all the time and kill the birds, can we ban them too as they annoy me?

CoeliacSpinsterMum · 09/11/2024 22:26

lasagnelle · 09/11/2024 20:44

Possibly Chinese New Year? How generous of you. And Diwali? No? Why not? It's more important than a Saturday before the annual celebration of someone not blowing up parliament

I think limiting to official displays would help reduce any controversy around which special occasions they are allowed for. Although agree that it could mean a display every weekend for some cause or another. But at least it wouldn't go on for hours in everyone's back gardens.

Yeah but fireworks have been around since guy fawkes tried to blow up parliament. So that's quite a long time to know of their annoying existence and take this into account when getting a dog

Fireworks affect animals and people with autism. Should all autistic people live on remote islands too?

wheeliegood · 09/11/2024 22:26

Some fucker is having their own personal display now... at 10.45pm. A few gardens away. It is so anti-social to have them at this time. Neighbours' dogs are barking. And I'm thoroughly pissed off with it. They're frigging loud. Sorry - just needed to vent. If you live in the Camp area of St Albans you know who you are. Stop it!

That sounds a great idea. I'd ban them from weddings

After 6pm?? Eh? That's just weird. I think the weekend before the 5th, the 5th and the weekend after everyone should just get used to it. Beyond that I agree is annoying.

Okay. 7pm bedtime :-)

Absolutely not. That was my point. People aren't optional

Not everyone with autism is affected by fireworks... and plenty of people that are not autistic are affected by them.

It is not just cats and dogs. Look up the stats on horse deaths and injuries due to fireworks.
And a PP who works in a sanctuary for birds posted here saying one died this year.
