Fireworks grrrrr

Cat won't move from hiding place - she's terrified. Baby can't sleep. They go off almost every night from October onwards.

Fireworks should be banned after 6pm. And further to that, while I'm here, they should be banned completely except if being sold for official displays. AIBU?

It’s a few nights a year, I think calling for a ban is massively overkill.

I’m allergic to dogs and have to put up with them every bloody day because people insist on taking them everywhere now, hard to find a cafe or pub without them.

I don’t call for them to be banned tho, just need to accept that some people like dogs and that I will sometimes be inconvenienced by them.

Not being funny but every old person I’ve ever met is hard of hearing

WTF?

UnrealRita · 09/11/2024 23:53

I was thinking 10pm would be OK, but some big ones STARTED at 11.30pm tonight. Local dogs had been put to bed and you could hear them all barking. 😔

It's still Bonfire Night /Firework weekend.
Either weekend either side is still Bonfire Night imo.
What do you class as "official displays?"
It's been Diwali the Festival of Lights here in the UK for the past week or so too. Not reigned in to the 5th only...

Outtherelookingin · 09/11/2024 21:11

It's not almost every night since October though is it 🙄 and they're not even that loud, definitely not loud enough to wake babies unless you have single glazed windows and it's all your neighbours doing large displays in their gardens all at the same time.

@Outtherelookingin
In my neighbourhood it is. They start mid October and carry out throughout November. And yes, they are bloody loud.
On Bonfire night some nutter kept setting them off till well after 1 am. He/She would set one at a time at 10-15 intervals. The only reason I can think for doing that, was to upset people.

A few years back we had a teenage psychopath setting them off every day at daytime during Easter holidays. He deliberately set them towards other people’s properties and then would peer over the fence laughing and filming people’s reactions. This went on for several weeks, till he hit my conservatory and I got the police involved.
I have signed the petition as I think there should be much stricter law regarding the fireworks.

In many places it is not a few nights, though.
In my old neighbourhood it was only a couple weekends and a bonfire night.
There were fireworks on Diwali and Chinese New Year, as well.
I used to love the fireworks.
We lived next to a leisure centre where they would sometimes have fireworks at weddings and it never bothered me.

Now I live in a place where they start setting them off in mid October and continue throughout November. There is someone setting them off almost every night, quite often multiple people, and it goes on for hours till 10-11 at least.
And believe me, it is unbearable.
It also affects my cat who stops going out for months ( normally she sits in our garden for hours).

Fireworks are illegal in Ireland and it doesn't make a damn bit of difference. From mid September until halloween every year you have wankers setting off bangers and Fireworks every weekend night. This year was the worst ever, there was a lot very close to where we live. Dds dog is terrified and despite being on tranquilisers has been a quivering mess. I don't get the appeal of Fireworks at all, a big fabulous display i can understand, but a few random ones in someone's garden, why bother?

I was coming here to say this. This was by far the worst year in my area too! Makes no difference that they are illegal. And they started earlier and earlier every year.

grumpypedestrian · 09/11/2024 22:33

No one is saying it does. But recognising the severe distress it causes is important. No one is saying stop fireworks, just limit them to organised displays when people can plan and medicate accordingly.

I find it hard to believe the random firework in parks and gardens are about the gunpowder plot.

I find it hard to believe any of them are any more tbh...

I know you don't want to hear this but perhaps you should consider rehoming your cat? It doesn't sound like a good environment for it.

Yes the cat should be rehomed and she should move house! That's the answer. People must be able to have their selfish, inconsiderate fun, regardless of who it affects!

Having a cat is selfish, having a dog is selfish, setting off fireworks is selfish having a kid is selfish, driving a car is selfish... how does one person's selfishness trump another's?

I would suggest there are levels of selfishness and it depends on the context. My cat is a rescue cat and she lives indoors. Selfish level feels pretty low on that one. I'm not sure how that equates to sending loud explosives into the sky. The problem is that everyone does it individually, thereby creating a bigger problem. It's antisocial, just as revving motorbikes round and round residential streets is, or playing music loud, or any other disturbance of the peace, as far as I'm concerned.

I'm not saying the fireworks aren't excessive but it's not fair on the cat for it to spend 1/12th of every year terrified is it

Inastatus · 10/11/2024 09:02

@lasagnelle - I don’t know where you imagine this mythical place to be where there are no fireworks ever! Perhaps all cats and dogs should be re-homed on a remote island somewhere in the Outer Hebrides🤔

What are you on about? Rehome pets to areas which don't have fireworks? Is that your suggestion?

If I had a cat and it was traumatised living where it lives then yes consider rehoming it to somewhere there are fewer fireworks. I live in a city - we have LOADS of fireworks. So I wouldn't get a cat

I have 5 cats. They're all fine. But my dog, 13, who used to be fine is now petrified. Weeing, shaking, complete mess.

I'll get straight on to rehoming him shall I.

lasagnelle · 10/11/2024 09:17

Large parts of the Welsh countryside have limited fireworks. It's about population density

Up to you. Do what's best for your dog. He may prefer a peaceful retirement

People are going to dick about with fireworks. We can't stop them. What you can do is consider if there's anything you can do for your dog. Medication, moving, rehoming.

I assure you I'm not. If you live in a densely populated are you have more chance of being surrounded by idiots who set off fireworks throughout the year

Course it can be stopped. There is a petition to stop them being sold to the public with millions of signatures.
