Fireworks grrrrr

Cat won't move from hiding place - she's terrified. Baby can't sleep. They go off almost every night from October onwards.

Fireworks should be banned after 6pm. And further to that, while I'm here, they should be banned completely except if being sold for official displays. AIBU?

Too many pets, not enough fireworks.

Rummly · 10/11/2024 16:22

I want to know where these firework-tastic places are. Assuming they’re not mythical of course. I might move there for the fun and joy.

Where I am has a v large Indian heritage community that celebrates Diwali, plus there are all the usual fireworks occasions.

Even with all that it’s nothing like the Dresden 1945 descriptions that some posters give about where they live. It’s nice to see and hear public celebration.

TBH, I think these objections to fireworks are just selfish dog-owner bollocks.

OonaStubbs · 10/11/2024 16:24

Well I object to both fireworks and dogs. They are both dangerous and annoying and a waste of valuable resources.

My dog isn't. He's never been allowed to annoy anyone. Unless his existence annoys you.

When my nan was still living alone, with dementia, she was found on her street in her night clothes confused and disorientated due to fireworks. She didn't own a dog. What a twat she is eh.

I agree. And dog owners are over egging the pudding by adding in wildlife, autism, elderly people, war veterans, refugees etc etc to try to bolster their argument.
Many more people are killed or injured by dogs every year.

mitogoshigg · 10/11/2024 16:45

6pm? Some of us have jobs! Also they are traditional for Diwali too (that was last weekend) I'm fine with only organised displays for loud ones though, i personally don't let them off as they are dangerous in small gardens

My mum had dementia and wandered off in her nightclothes, confused and disorientated. Nothing to do with dogs or fireworks, it was the dementia.
We can all supply anecdotes but they prove nothing

Actually I've done a survey and your dog annoys everyone.

HauntedBungalow · 10/11/2024 16:48

Including David Attenborough, the king and the entire cast of Hollyoaks.

kitsuneghost · 10/11/2024 16:49

Pets annoy me more than fireworks.
I only have the pleasure of seeing fireworks occasionally. I have to look at people's ugly mutts ever day.
If your allowed your pet, I'm allowed my fireworks. Live and let live.

Boomer55 · 10/11/2024 16:52

I’m not bothered about pets, but it’s still like Beirut here with what sounds like bombs going off. Time to stop for a while now.🙄

Agree. Funny how they don't give a shit about wildlife when they let their dogs off leash in parks to chase small animals and let them piss in woods and on beaches.

The good people of Mumsnet have never heard of 'be kind' :-)

I appreciate what people are saying about not everyone liking dogs, and cats being a nuisance. I understand driving cars could be considered selfish, but generally they are a necessity. I still think constant private firework displays are a public disturbance, not just for animals but for humans too, young and old.

There's no need to be obtuse about it.

Give me fireworks over pathetic dogs any day. Less shit to tread in, too. Win win.

I do agree. It’s not nice.

I mean, fancy imposing on everyone else just to suit your dog? Shocking, really.

Nor indeed about all the farmed life that get the slaughterhouse treatment to feed these damn dogs and cats. But oh yeah, they care so much about animals.

I don't think the issue is fireworks vs dogs. They can't be directly compared.

This time was due to the fireworks.

You are kind of missing the point. It isn't fireworks v dogs per se. It is you choose to have a pet. I choose to have fireworks. One doesn't trump the other. If you want your choices respected you must allow others to have things they love.

A lot of cat and dog food is what's left over from humans. Soooo doing us a waste disposal service really.

If you chose to have fireworks on bonfire night, knock yourself out. (Until they're banned)

But other, none holiday times? Get yourself in the bin

What about the people who suffer from fireworks who don't have dogs? Because arsehole teens see fit to lob them round the place, setting fires, posting them through people's letterboxes?

It really isn't like Beirut and that's a horrible comparison to use.
