Fireworks grrrrr

Cat won't move from hiding place - she's terrified. Baby can't sleep. They go off almost every night from October onwards.

Fireworks should be banned after 6pm. And further to that, while I'm here, they should be banned completely except if being sold for official displays. AIBU?

If you buy a dog you are promising to keep it safe. Don't do it if you're going to be in an area with fireworks and they'll get so frightened.

@lasagnelle - not sure what you mean? You have no control over what other people in your area do.

Dont get a dog if it's likely to be exposed to fireworks and be scared

Sorry, do you think dog owners control what their neighbours do? Do you think dog owners should move every time they hear a firework?

blackerfriday · 09/11/2024 21:52

I don't know how anyone can blithely ignore the deaths caused every year by firworks, and have a 'great' time. Here's just one sad loss. https://www.facebook.com/photo/?fbid=995061302665659&set=a.649488023889657

Would it really ruin everyone's fun to just use the no noise fireworks? It would be a start.

No. In this country it is well known 5th of november is some sort of celebration of a failed terrorist plot. So if you live anywhere near people there will likely be fireworks. It's then silly to complain about fireworks on the 9th of November. If you accept them on the 5th then any night should be fine. If it's not fine move somewhere more remote

@lasagnelle - that would be nobody ever getting a dog then! Fireworks are pretty universal.

Seems fair on the dogs if they are going to be traumatised by fireworks each year

Yep, have a Google about how many horses are injured or die due to fireworks. It makes for a grim read.

Inastatus · 09/11/2024 21:56

@lasagnelle - Once a year would be manageable, it’s the endless night after night fireworks that’s the problem.

Mlanket · 09/11/2024 21:56

Why are some pets unbothered by them? One of my dogs used to be scared so we kept him in but the other dogs & cats were nonplussed.

We don’t have many outside of organised events here but tbh they are much louder than a neighbour down the road letting a few off.

grumpypedestrian · 09/11/2024 21:57

I’m fairly sure people letting off fireworks in their garden aren’t celebrating the gunpowder plot. There are public displays for that.

Are you saying all rehoming centres should be in remote areas of Scotland?

If it was limited to public displays owners can plan accordingly. It’s the random backyard explosions that harm animals. Some dogs can receive medication to help.

People who have dogs who are scared of fireworks tend to get a medication regime in place so on the 5th, the dog has a chance of not being too affected.
It is perfectly reasonable to expect no fireworks after this date. Why are people setting them off tonight?

Mlanket · 09/11/2024 21:58

And my dog who was scared of fireworks hated thunderstorms.

Some asshole was settling off fireworks at 6.20am this morning. I think it is reasonable to expect this not to happen. Selling explosives to the general public is a ridiculous idea.

avaritablevampire · 09/11/2024 21:59

Just have silent ones. They are still really effective, but don't freak out pets and wildlife, or wake babies / young children.

Mlanket · 09/11/2024 21:59

@XenoBitch I think it’s normal to have organised displays in the weekends prior & after the 5th, presumably weekends attract bigger numbers/revenue.

Inastatus · 09/11/2024 22:00

@XenoBitch - a bird of prey died of shock and another had a stroke in my local bird sanctuary.

But there are random ones going off where I am right now.

Mlanket · 09/11/2024 22:02

Presumably those people are celebrating? Who knows, I’ve only ever had a week of them at most & never in the early hours. I also can barely hear them unless a window is opened, granted not everyone has a choice re what windows they have.

XenoBitch · 09/11/2024 22:00

They've been going off for about an hour here too.

A good friend of mine has PTSD which is triggered by fireworks. Once/ twice a year she can prepare for. But not most nights for 2/3 months. Which is what we had last year.

grumpypedestrian · 09/11/2024 22:03

Even if you don’t care about animals, the distress random fireworks causes to anyone with autism should be enough to ban sales to the public.

Mlanket · 09/11/2024 22:04

But not most nights for 2/3 months.

That is ridiculous, it must be very location specific?

Most likely. Some of my neighbours are pricks. On the whole I love where I live. But some of them need shooting evicting.

Because it's a weekend near the 5th and fireworks were probably cheap. If there's medication you can give a dog to help I'd suggest giving it to them on the Saturday before and after guy fawkes day as well as the actual day because people seem to really want to celebrate the failed attack at the weekend

Totally agree with you there, no one should have a right to buy fireworks. They are also bad for the environment.
