Those who believe MN is more leftists, what makes you think so?

ItTook8WibesToKnow7WasEnough · 31/10/2024 16:08

Because to me MN has always come off much more right / conservative.

So, if you can point out what makes it so leftist.

OP posts:
Iwantabrightsunnyday · 31/10/2024 18:08

Pro-abortion, anti-Christian, this is why

Pro-abortion, anti-Christian, this is why

But this does not stop me learning the many other various view points
It is leftist for some who are called from the right
However there are many more viewpoints that just left and right and so reading on it, is interesting to me

BarbaraHoward · 31/10/2024 18:12

It used to be very lefty but hasn't been for a good while now. Moving increasingly to the right, although I suppose it's not unusual in that.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 31/10/2024 18:14

Because I see more posts espousing left-leaning views than right-leaning views. Surely that is the only basis on which to answer that question? Weirdly, I think some people confuse 'financially well-off' or 'middle class' with right-wing.

NancyBellaDonna · 31/10/2024 18:21

I think leftists are in a minority here now.
However, there is a bunch of vociferous agitators here who sound like they are coached by the Daily Fail.

ChicRaven · 31/10/2024 18:24

Loving the labour party and not hearing a bad word said against them all.
Not understanding people's concerns in terms of immigration.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 31/10/2024 18:26

Just look at the long running threads in Chat - Starmer no x threads! They won’t hear a word against Labour, nor a word pro Conservatives.

BloominNora · 31/10/2024 18:27

I've recently come back to MN after a good few years of not engaging at all and I would say it is pretty evenly mixed between right, centrist and left.

People will say it is leftist or right wing in opposition to their own view because of confirmation bias. They gloss over the many posts that lean towards their own views and the ones that disagree stand out - hence the sense of oppositional bias.

It's the same reason left wingers think the BBC is a tory shill and right wingers think it's left leaning socialist nonsense yet every impartial academic study ever has found it to be very centrist and largely unbiased.

I have noticed that MN seems to have become a lot more vicious on both sides but they'll just reflects what has happened in society at large since 2016.

Isitfridayyetsophie · 31/10/2024 18:29

because if people post a “right wing” view they’re accused of being a Tory bot!

DutchCowgirl · 31/10/2024 18:36

Compared to the Dutch mum-webforum I often hang around, MN is very right wing. Especially about environmental issues. Not once i’ve read here that people get lectured about flying or other unsustainable lifestyle choices… just once i read some criticism about fast fashion.

ginasevern · 31/10/2024 18:38

I think on balance it is more left leaning but maybe that's unconscious bias because so am I. I also read gransnet (yes, I'm old) and that is most definitely left leaning. Anyone who says that all pensioners/baby boomers are Tories would be in for quite the shock.

LoveSandbanks · 31/10/2024 18:41

Iwantabrightsunnyday · 31/10/2024 18:08

Pro-abortion, anti-Christian, this is why

How is being left anti Christian?

for that matter, where does it talk about terminating a pregnancy in the Bible?

Jesus said feed the poor, surely left leaning is more Christian?

I agree with this. It's rare to see an environmental thread or response on here. Lots and lots of posts about where people are jetting off to on holiday though.

Comments like this do it for me. The left loves to sneer and look down on anyone who doesn't share their views.

Reserved101 · 31/10/2024 18:52

Looking at the voting intention polls that are posted before elections, versus the election results, Mumsnet is slightly more to the left than the general population, but not remarkably so.

Reserved101 · 31/10/2024 18:57

Iwantabrightsunnyday · 31/10/2024 18:08

Based on polling, only around 6% of British population are against abortion, and they're more likely to be men than women, so I don't think abortion views are a good metric for ascertaining if someone if left or right wing by UK standards.

Whatsitreallylike · 31/10/2024 18:57

I’ve always thought it was more left leaning on human rights / public services (views on abortion, NHS, and eduction) and right leaning on financial/political matters (tax & Govt borrowing)

Oh I don't know, I've been hear donkeys years, I've seen plenty of anger about flying, plenty from tree huggers and tree slaughters and many who think trees are great but that one needs to come down type thing.
I think the whole Brexit debacle saw more vocal discussions, both left and right.
I think there is less fencing sitting now, there were a lot more splintered bottoms a decade ago.

Erm if you mean private sector love Starmer, I'd agree but I can guarantee the overwhelming majority of NHS workers and teachers are left wing.

BarbaraHoward · 31/10/2024 19:04

But on the subject of trans people, as right wing as southern states of America.

Yeah I debated commenting on this in my post above. I think it's one of the reasons for the general swing to the right on here over the past few years.

Mebebecat · 31/10/2024 19:06

Left leaning and intellectually elitist.
Far right, scum, bigots, fascists, racists, thick, knuckle draggers are all terms I hear all the time on here re white working class people that I don't hear anywhere else. Apart from perhaps the government.

TizerorFizz · 31/10/2024 19:11

Yes NHS and Education are unionized and left wing. Many work for both of these and are left wing. Hence labour shortages! Lots of people don’t want to join them and put up with the office politics. Just nicer to work with like minded people. So on here politics, economics, education and general jealousy is left wing.

AccidentallyWesAnderson · 31/10/2024 19:12

And I was going to mention how it's wild that if you believe in biological reality, that you can't change sex, and that sex trumps gender ideology in situations you must be aligned with the 'far right', as a few posters (like yourself) pop up with now and again. Laughable.
