Those who believe MN is more leftists, what makes you think so?

ItTook8WibesToKnow7WasEnough · 31/10/2024 16:08

Because to me MN has always come off much more right / conservative.

So, if you can point out what makes it so leftist.

OP posts:
EasternStandard · 03/11/2024 17:55

Surely the people who post like that know they do

CurlewKate · 03/11/2024 18:10

Just checking-is characterising the Left as those who have an "utter lack of knowledge about how the economy works and expecting other people to pay for everything. Then shrieking and equaling when things get worse and wondering why everyone is poorer" an insult that I should be objecting to?

I suspect "equaling" was meant to be "squealing" by the way...

Who would apologise? And to whom? We don’t know who wrote the posts or who they were addressed to. Or even which specific thread they were on.

It was 5 or 6 weeks ago! - they've probably forgotten/have better things to do/think about - aren't obsessing like this

EasternStandard · 03/11/2024 18:12

Oh yes from the people who report a post because...

That was requested. Evidence was wanted but not really

Aduvetday · 03/11/2024 18:23

It’s like a claxon has gone off.

Papyrophile · 03/11/2024 18:33

I've been offline all day.............. whoa! it's an internet thread, open to anyone.

I like the robust discussions, any insults are water off the duck's back.I do try to avoid ad hominens. Admittedly some of my opinions are Marmite.

Ah yes...

Anyway thanks to pp for trying

The centre is surely a myth, what is centrism?

In the middle between right and left. Why do you think it's a myth?

CurlewKate · 03/11/2024 18:58

I wish I understood what's going on. Bizarrely, I feel guilty but I have no idea why....

Don't think you've done anything wrong - you have nothing to feel guilty about here - go and make yourself a cup of tea and take a couple of hours away from this thread/MN

No reason for any feelings of guilt. If it’s any comfort I’m completely bewildered too, I’ve never seen anything quite like it on MN.

CurlewKate · 03/11/2024 19:34

Thank you-I wasn't being entirely serious about the guilt!! But would love to know who's done what to who when.....

I've recently come back to MN after a good few years of not engaging at all and I would say it is pretty evenly mixed between right, centrist and left.

People will say it is leftist or right wing in opposition to their own view because of confirmation bias. They gloss over the many posts that lean towards their own views and the ones that disagree stand out - hence the sense of oppositional bias.

It's the same reason left wingers think the BBC is a tory shill and right wingers think it's left leaning socialist nonsense yet every impartial academic study ever has found it to be very centrist and largely unbiased.

I have noticed that MN seems to have become a lot more vicious on both sides but they'll just reflects what has happened in society at large since 2016.

If you think the BBC isn't pro right, you must be crackers 🤣
It's as plain as the nose on your face. I'd love to see the source of these "studies".

I agree with you but right leaning people think it’s pro left. Personally I think it depends on the individual - Fiona Bruce, Laura Kuensberg and Nick Robinson betray their right wing views constantly, other journalists are more neutral.

Who would gain most if the BBC was scrapped?

The parties on the left or the right?

KimMumsnet · 03/11/2024 20:57

Good evening, all. It would be good to keep this thread on track rather than resorting to personal attacks, please. We will need to delete it if it veers off any further into digs at individual posters.

Thank you.

Thank you for keeping an eye. Personally I think Mumsnet could do without this thread altogether.

I have no idea what is happening on this thread. On another thread a poster tagged me into a quote of another poster, attributing someone elses words to me. I pointed it out. They admitted the error and apologised and I accepted the apology and moved on.

What's the problem here?

Hey @lifeturnsonadime someone asked for quotes to prove something, they were put up and then deleted. Probably best to leave it there as it'll go round in circles again!

Thanks Eastern. So shouldn't be a big deal, but is. OK.

It was a bit more complicated than that - the quotes were from another thread from 5-6 weeks ago

MNHQ deleted them for breaching T&C

Gwenhwyfar · 03/11/2024 18:55

In the middle between right and left. Why do you think it's a myth?

Because the vast majority of people are a mix of quite left or quite right of centre positions. They're not really in the middle - they might be right on crime and left economically for example. And for those who are in the middle - well that's relative to the extremes then?

The parties on the right. For sure.

I agree with that, even though I think the BBC is broadly fair and about as unbiased as news sources get.

However, even by being fairly neutral, the BBC is the primary counterpoint to the right wing billionaires who control most of the British media.

Gwenhwyfar · 04/11/2024 16:56

" I think the BBC is broadly fair and about as unbiased as news sources get."

I disagree with that. When you had 90% of economists being anti-Brexit and the BBC wheels out one pro-Brexit one and one anti-Brexit one in the name of 'balance' that not really being objective, it's going to extreme lengths to avoid being called anti Brexit.
