To have expected them to swap DD’s tombola prize?

DD had a go on a family tombola this morning in a family pub/restaurant style place. She won and it was bottle of wine. I asked if she could swap it for one of the more child friendly prizes or one of the teddies but they refused. So she’s won a bottle of wine that she can’t even have! AIBU to have excepted them to swap DD’s prize?

good grief op

good. grief

Scutterbug · 29/09/2024 14:09

I guess that’s the risk you take when you play? I remember school fairs where mine often won alcohol, I was chuffed 😂

hillroad · 29/09/2024 14:09

what happens if a child won the teddy that had been given to your daughter

WiserOlderElf · 29/09/2024 14:09

It’s a tombola, getting whatever random prize you’re given is kind of the point! When you bought her a ticket you knew there was a chance she’d win an unsuitable prize.

TickingAlongNicely · 29/09/2024 14:09

That's tombolas. A middle aged single man could a Ny Little Pony hair set while a child wins a bottle of wine.

ChanelBoucle · 29/09/2024 14:09

Oh come on, op. Keep it in perspective.

hillroad · 29/09/2024 14:10

when you bought the ticket

did you not see the wine bottles?

do you understand what a tombola is?

Flossyflop · 29/09/2024 14:10

Jesus wept

wafflesmgee · 29/09/2024 14:10

Wrm..YABU...do you understand how tombolas work?!?😂

SouthLondonMum22 · 29/09/2024 14:10

That’s what a tombola is. Don’t do it if you don’t want to take the risk.

BeMintBee · 29/09/2024 14:10

🤦‍♀️

There were other child friendly prizes there.

where I work, when a child wins alcohol on a tombola we let them swap it for a more suitable prize. That’s just the right thing to do.

Pretty sure it's illegal to have kids playing for alcohol prizes.

Howmanyusernames123 · 29/09/2024 14:12

Well you can ask. If they refuse you should accept that.

Ellie1015 · 29/09/2024 14:13

Yabu. Also what age is child? At any age child should learn how these types of games work.

Karmaisac4t · 29/09/2024 14:13

Tbf they aren’t supposed to give alcoholic prizes to under 18s

TickingAlongNicely · 29/09/2024 14:13

Just spend your quid on a packet of sweets next time if it offends you so much.

Fair enough. Just seems ridiculous though to allow a child to win a wine bottle when there’s other child friendly prizes there.

YABU. They can’t just swap prizes, that’s not how it works. I used to win alcohol all the time at those things when I was a child. It was a running joke in my family to send me over every time we saw one because I would usually come back with a bottle of wine for whichever adult I was with. They never swapped the prize for me and I didn’t expect them to. I was just happy to be able to give something to my family, and it was fun.

True. Stalls that have alcohol can only sell tickets to adults. OP didn’t say her daughter bought the ticket though, an adult may have purchased it for her.

Anyway, be glad you won something. I never do!

FourEyesGood · 29/09/2024 14:15

YABU. The prize is random - that’s the point! When my 6yo daughter won a bottle of whisky on a tombola almost a decade ago, I bought her some chocolate in exchange. We were both very happy with the result.

mrsm43s · 29/09/2024 14:17

Surely you buy the bottle of wine off her, and she buys herself something she wants with the money you give her for the wine.

With Tombola, you get what you win, you don't get to choose what you win!

Edited

DD gave the pound to her for the ticket.
