To have expected them to swap DD’s tombola prize?

DD had a go on a family tombola this morning in a family pub/restaurant style place. She won and it was bottle of wine. I asked if she could swap it for one of the more child friendly prizes or one of the teddies but they refused. So she’s won a bottle of wine that she can’t even have! AIBU to have excepted them to swap DD’s prize?

If the OP's daughter say had ticket no. 150 and the teddy was say no. 300, they just swap the tickets over so now ticket no. 300 is on the wine and 150 is on the teddy. The other ticket with 300 on it is still in the drum.

Hope I've explained that somewhat clearly 😁

Oh yeah… 🤣

I’m going to have a glass of wine 😂

This would’ve been an ideal opportunity to teach your child about disappointment and building resilience. But no. She had to have the teddy at all costs. Parenting fail.

They are breaking the law as you can't give children alcohol....and as mich fun as it is, children arnt actually allowed to gamble or take part in tombolas. It's not a family tombola if it is offering wine.
And before anyone jumps in with...children can, it's my job to know the law. Most people don't even realise that if your child picks the number for the scratch cards, then the cashier is supposed to refuse the sale and if caught going along with it will lose their job and a heft fine to the cashier and company and possible lose their licence.
You could have reported it if it was a pub, om sure he'd love to swap it for you than get a 38,000 fine.

If this is your job then you must know this would be classed as an incidental lottery under the Gambling Act 2005 and as such children can purchase tickets. As the alcohol was not given to a child but to the adult then I’m not sure what law you think they have broken.

Give her a couple of quid and drink it yourself

Makingchocolatecake · 30/09/2024 22:45

I think most people would just drink the wine and buy their child some sweets or something.

Or keep it until she's old enough!!!

Longleggedgiraffe · 30/09/2024 23:07

Technically, I thin k, they were in the wrong for giving the wine to her. As soon as it was obviously for a child they should have come up with something else.

I think you let a good teaching moment go by going back for the teddy. My dd would have been chuffed to get the wine as a win is a result in itself. I remember her grinning all over her face for once winning a box of dishwasher tablets.

It's the whole point of a tombola no???
YABU it's a pound

Having run many tombolas and made sure everything was legal and above board I would say no laws have been broken

I must admit it took me a while to work it out 😂

BlueFlowers5 · 01/10/2024 12:51

Can't you swap it with her for something she likes?

Eejitmum101 · 02/10/2024 07:55

Wow, some people are so ungrateful.
I'll take the wine anyday

Ellie1015 · 02/10/2024 12:42

At 7 I would expect her to be able to handle the disappointment if not winning the teddy. However glad all sorted.

clarehhh · 02/10/2024 16:09

I would just say to her when you drink it, this is the lovely wine you won for us. Possibly even give her a couple of pounds for a treat
