To have expected them to swap DD’s tombola prize?

DD had a go on a family tombola this morning in a family pub/restaurant style place. She won and it was bottle of wine. I asked if she could swap it for one of the more child friendly prizes or one of the teddies but they refused. So she’s won a bottle of wine that she can’t even have! AIBU to have excepted them to swap DD’s prize?

You take the wine and buy her something in exchange. Sorted.

I won a set of saucepans on a tombola when I was a child. My mother gave me some money to buy some sweets and we were both happy.

Exactly.

Tombola is a form of gambling.

You agreed to your child to gamble so I guess they felt you considered her "adult" enough to win the alcohol.

Agree with above. You can ask to swap but a lot of places refuse.

Thfrog · 29/09/2024 14:33

Personally I don't think your child should have been allowed to enter if alcohol was a potential prize. However she was and that's the rules of a tombola so you need to get over it.

i cannot believe parents like the OP exist!

I’m bloody glad they do.

Keeps AIBU fun 😁

Tbf they aren’t supposed to give alcoholic prizes to under 18s

TBF they shouldn't have allowed an under 18 year old to have purchased a ticket if there was alcohol as prizes. It's more usual to divide it into two if kids are expected to want to buy tickets.

OP just take her to tesco and buy her a bag of sweets that she wants and swap it with her for the booze. Then have a large glass for yourself!

sweeneytoddsrazor · 29/09/2024 14:34

So your DD pulls out ticket number 80. Its a bottle of wine. So they swap it for prize number 70. Then another child pulls out 70 is it OK for them to have the wine because your child got what they wanted. What would have happened if it hadn't been a winning ticket

ThatsNotMyTeen · 29/09/2024 14:34

Blimey

what a storm in a teacup

wizzbitt · 29/09/2024 14:34

Whereabouts is this tombola? And is it still going? Asking for a friend.

You just swap the numbers on the prize, that’s all. It takes 2 seconds.

so if you give her a child friendly prize. You take the number off the child prize and then put it on the bottle of wine, sorted.

This would be the easiest thing to do after a child had won alcohol.

Well there’s a valuable lesson here. We can’t all be winners in life.

AdviceNeeded2024 · 29/09/2024 14:37

I mean, you got an almost free bottle of wine surely there’s a plus here somewhere!

You can't rig the tombola

TickingAlongNicely · 29/09/2024 14:37

If thos had been a preschool, you must have a point.

But a PUB?

PaperSheet · 29/09/2024 14:38

I recently won a 20 pack of beer on an expensive tombola! I cannot stand beer. Pretty much every single other prize would have been better for me. Some were amazing! So I gave it away. I was lucky enough to win anything and I was no worse off than if I hadn't won anything. It's just life. If everyone could swap prizes it would get silly.
Maybe the better way is so if you have a winning ticket you can choose. But that still only favours the first to play when there is many options.
The point of a tombola most of the time though is you just win what your ticket matches. Tough luck if you don't like it.

And then the next kid who gets the bottle of wine, with the number on that should have been a child friendly prize, but there are no child friendly prizes left… they get the short straw?

UpTheMagicFarawayTree · 29/09/2024 14:39

Utterly bizarre that you've even felt the need to post about this. A complete non event. I think you need to consider the things you are making a fuss about and, in turn, what that is teaching tour child about how someone should behave.

WiserOlderElf · 29/09/2024 14:40

Anyway can’t you just give her £1 to buy some sweets and drink the wine yourself? At 7 your child should know that you don’t always get the thing you want. Is she even bothered, or are you just raging at the injustice?

And you'll end up with someone getting a tin of mushy peas when they should have got wine or something. You just can't mess with the tombola it's not on.

😂 I also feel like I was at the wrong one when I won a plastic icing set.

I don't bake.

But seeing as I know how tombola works, I did not get upset and make a MN thread about it. I gave it to my mum instead.

I'm normal like that.

LionMummy8 · 29/09/2024 14:40

The lady running the tombola was the deputy general manager.

Great result I'd say. You got a bottle of wine for a quid.

Yeah this is what you're meant to do. Or...donate it to the next tombola, and then every time there's the same crap prizes no one wants.

Then she's on dodgy ground letting kids gamble for alcohol

wafflesmgee · 29/09/2024 14:42

Hahaha I can just picture the lady's bemused face when you went over and asked to swap the prize! Ridiculous and rude behaviour on your part.
