To have expected them to swap DD’s tombola prize?

DD had a go on a family tombola this morning in a family pub/restaurant style place. She won and it was bottle of wine. I asked if she could swap it for one of the more child friendly prizes or one of the teddies but they refused. So she’s won a bottle of wine that she can’t even have! AIBU to have excepted them to swap DD’s prize?

You scored a bottle of wine then OP 😀

(Please do not bring up your child to be expecting of something all the time)

Fair enough. Just seems ridiculous though to allow a child to win a wine bottle when there’s other child friendly prizes there.

You take the wine and buy her something in exchange. Sorted.

alseb · 29/09/2024 14:18

As someone who worked many a PTA tombola, swapping tickets/prizes is just unnecessary hassle for the poor person who has given up their precious time off to help!!

LionMummy8 · 29/09/2024 14:11

There were other child friendly prizes there.

where I work, when a child wins alcohol on a tombola we let them swap it for a more suitable prize. That’s just the right thing to do.

where you work?

but this wasn’t where you work

and what you wanted… is not the game of tombola and potentially would leave another child out of teddy that they’d rightfully won

what hope is there for your kids Op if you’re pissy about this. Seriously

DD gave the pound to her for the ticket.

Was she alone or with an adult? If with an adult am assuming the seller thought it was okay.

I once won mudflaps. I was 6yo!

I learnt very young: play stupid games, win stupid prizes.

your pound, correct?

were all the wine bottles hidden away and you could only see teddy bears?

ColonelRhubarbBikini · 29/09/2024 14:21

I remember winning the tombola at the school fair. I was the last ticket and there was an unclaimed prize so they let me choose between a houseplant and a bottle of rather nice whiskey. My Dad watched in abject horror as I chose the houseplant because I knew my parents liked plants. My Dad likes whiskey more although my 6 year old self didn’t know that Grin.

It would’ve been nice for them to let your daughter swap but then it opens a can of worms for everyone swapping I suppose. Lactose free person gets the chocs and wants to switch, gluten free person with biscuits, person with skin condition with bubble bath etc etc. Simpler to say you get what you get and tough titties if it’s not for you.

FearOfTheDucks · 29/09/2024 14:22

I've helped with tombolas before and if a child won an alcoholic prize the policy was not to give it to them directly but ask them to bring the adult they were there with over to claim it.

Swapping would have been far too much hassle and opened the door for people to ask for other swaps because whatever they won was unwanted or unsuitable in some way

Edited

I was sat at the table in the pub and she went over to the tombola and played it with her pound. I could see her the whole time from the table. The lady working there brought her over to the table with (the member of staff was holding it) the wine she had won, I was getting up to walk over and then they started coming over to the table,

Agree. The clue was in the thread title.

GrandHighPoohbah · 29/09/2024 14:24

I think you just have to go along with the set up of that particular tombola really. We always ran them that if you got a winning ticket, you picked your prize until they were all gone, but not everyone does it that way.

Whaleandsnail6 · 29/09/2024 14:25

Yabu. Its a bit of fun and usually just to raise money for a good cause.

Don't make a fuss by asking to swap prizes/complain a child could have a go on a game where alcohol is offered...just take the prize and move on.

Where would they draw the line...oh I won bubble bath but I dont have a bath, can I have that wine please? Or I won a kids prize but I dont have kids, I want something else... Just regift the wine if you dont drink, tell dd well done for her lucky win, buy her a chocolate if you want and move on.

saltinesandcoffeecups · 29/09/2024 14:25

I remember one year cleaning up at my school’s fall bazaar in the ring toss game. I think I ended up with 3 or 4 2-liter bottles of coke, 2 bottles of champagne and a bottle of wine. I was 7 or 8 at the time. The people working the game just told me to get an adult to collect the liquor 🤷‍♀️ so I had my friends mum who took us collect them and she gave them back when she dropped me off at home. My mum was a little confused why I came home with so much alcohol but didn’t complain.

Exactly this. You’d open the floodgates to teetotallers asking to swap their alcohol prize, vegans asking to swap their pack of sweets with gelatin in etc. The point of a tombola is you get what you’re given!

Notreat · 29/09/2024 14:26

I'm afraid that's the way a tombola works. It's pot luck you can't pick and choose the prize. Most people get nothing at all.

So the problem is?

Your dd wasn't handed the wine. You were....

You are really making a big deal over nothing here.

AgainandagainandagainSS · 29/09/2024 14:28

Luck of the draw OP.
This is when daughter learns humility and generosity and gives her prize to someone else who can enjoy it.
At our village tombola if a child wins alcohol an adult has to come and claim it. As with yours.
You have come out winning here. You have a bottle of wine and your child has no sugary crap or tat to fill your house with.

hillroad · 29/09/2024 14:29

i cannot believe parents like the OP exist!

AmeliaEarache · 29/09/2024 14:30

You do understand how tombolas work, don’t you, OP? Any of the random crap on the table can be won by anyone.

I’m vegetarian and won the voucher for the local butcher. I just gave it to my mate. My children have won all sorts of inappropriate stuff. There’s no swapping, it’s just how tombolas are.

A child won a random prize from a family tombola, not a child's tombola, but a family one in a pub.

LBFseBrom · 29/09/2024 14:31

No they certainly did not need to swap your daughter's prize. She can give you the bottle of wine and you give her a bit of extra pocket money.

Devilsmommy · 29/09/2024 14:32

Strawberrycheesecake7 · 29/09/2024 14:14

YABU. They can’t just swap prizes, that’s not how it works. I used to win alcohol all the time at those things when I was a child. It was a running joke in my family to send me over every time we saw one because I would usually come back with a bottle of wine for whichever adult I was with. They never swapped the prize for me and I didn’t expect them to. I was just happy to be able to give something to my family, and it was fun.

🤣 I was exactly the same. Always won a bottle 😁

BobLemon · 29/09/2024 14:32

There was WINE!? In a PUB tombola?!
