To have expected them to swap DD’s tombola prize?

LionMummy8 · 29/09/2024 14:07

DD had a go on a family tombola this morning in a family pub/restaurant style place. She won and it was bottle of wine. I asked if she could swap it for one of the more child friendly prizes or one of the teddies but they refused. So she’s won a bottle of wine that she can’t even have! AIBU to have excepted them to swap DD’s prize?

I won a box of cigars when I was 14 ha ha but it was 1986

LionMummy8 · 29/09/2024 15:44

It was in a chain family carvery style pub.

Pull yourself together 😂

And the teetotal 23 year old who's delighted with the teddy she's won as it will be perfect for her niece suddenly finds it replaced by unwanted wine ...

If it was at a fete they likely would have had alcohol as a prize too, this makes no difference.

You can keep adding irrelevant updates but clearly everyone thinks you are BU, the updates you are adding will not change that!

Maria1979 · 29/09/2024 15:55

Well, you were the one letting her enter a tombola where wine was one of the things to win. So you won the wine, bravo. I won a 100 £ reduction on tattoos once and I hate tatoos. Gave it to a friend. If you don't like the wine then give it away.

i cannot believe parents like the OP exist!

Come on be serious!!!! Have you not read half the threads on Mumsnet lol

Drfosters · 29/09/2024 15:57

It going to lie, I was always delighted when the kids would turn up with the wine!

farleysrusks · 29/09/2024 15:58

Not RTFT, but this seems irresponsible licence wise on the part of the pub?

TinDogTavern · 29/09/2024 15:58

Is there a better way to waste a Sunday afternoon than reading an AIBU when the OP asks if she's BU, the entire world says she is, and the OP spends hours insisting that she isn't?

No. No, there is not.

It was brought directly to the op as an adult, not handed to the child
perfectly legal

westernlights · 29/09/2024 16:00

Life lesson for your daughter, you dont always get what you want.
Plus her money helped towards funds or charity.

I'm sure she doesn't really need a crusty germ infested cuddly toy

You asked. You were told yes by the majority. .

Are you at any point going to accept that?

Probably not so I have to assume you are now just being a wind-up merchant.

TheFreaksShallInheritTheEarth · 29/09/2024 16:14

Your child won a prize that was unsuitable. So what? I'm sure you or someone else can use it.
Usually, you don't win at all at a tombola.

Were the proceeds going towards a good cause?

lightsandtunnels · 29/09/2024 16:15

YABU
It's obviously a charity stall or something and if they let one person swap the prize (even if it is a child) then it sets a precedent, surely.
I would have made a big fuss of her and say something like, "Oh Mummy/Daddy will love that! I'm sure they'll give you a treat that you would like in exchange." Then get her a little prize from the shop. She would love giving this to Daddy/Mummy/whoever and it teaches her the joy of giving a gift to someone!

Choochoo21 · 29/09/2024 16:18

I personally would have said that she would prefer X prize and to ask the person who wins it if they’d rather have wine instead.

There was no harm in you asking but they were within their rights to say no.

If I was them I would have probably just swapped it but kids are likely to be their main customer and so perhaps the more child friendly items on the table, the better.

They may think that if they do it for your DD they may have to do it for everyone too.

Sorry I completely missed that, I thought it was a school thing!

Squeezetheday · 29/09/2024 16:30

Lmao when we used to go to events with a tombola back in the day, my parents encouraged us to pick the booze or chocolates 😂 obviously couldn’t drink but usually the other prizes were rubbish! Surely you can drink it OP?! Or give it to someone who will!

Tiredalwaystired · 29/09/2024 16:33

And if the next winning ticket on that bottle is a kid?and the next one?

Totally unreasonable. A tombola is exactly about random prizes. Take the wine from her and buy her some chocolates in lieu of her prize. It’s no wonder it’s hard work to get people to volunteer to run things like this with difficult people like you around.

MammaGisAF · 29/09/2024 16:35

LionMummy8 · 29/09/2024 14:40

The lady running the tombola was the deputy general manager.

Anyone else feel sorry for this employee? OP sounds like she’s gearing up to make a complaint. It’s a £1 spend on a tombola. It’s supposed to be fun. Chill out.

Theunamedcat · 29/09/2024 16:36

We won a large quantity of alcohol on a tombola once we asked if we could exchange and we were allowed because we are a tea total family 😂 plus having it on the table made more people want to play

itsgettingweird · 29/09/2024 16:36

It's a tombola.

You bet the prize you win (if you win)

That's kinda the point 😂😂🙄

Zilla1 · 29/09/2024 16:37

Forget it, Jake, it's tombola (Chinatown).

Funkyslippers · 29/09/2024 16:41

MrsMurphyIWish · 29/09/2024 14:15

True. Stalls that have alcohol can only sell tickets to adults. OP didn’t say her daughter bought the ticket though, an adult may have purchased it for her.

Anyway, be glad you won something. I never do!

Edited

Are there official rules for this? As I've been to loads of tombolas where dd has won alcohol. I've usually had to accept it though as an adult but they let anyone buy a ticket

Singleandproud · 29/09/2024 16:42

@funkyslippers, that is the rule. The alcohol has to be handed to an adult not the child. raffles / tombolas and similar are exempt from normal licensing rules
