To have expected them to swap DD’s tombola prize?

DD had a go on a family tombola this morning in a family pub/restaurant style place. She won and it was bottle of wine. I asked if she could swap it for one of the more child friendly prizes or one of the teddies but they refused. So she’s won a bottle of wine that she can’t even have! AIBU to have excepted them to swap DD’s prize?

In your system, OP, what would happen if the last two prizes remaining were wine, but both tickets drawn were being held by children?

Madness. Self obsessed nonsense.

At my primary school fete one year I (aged 7) won a set of hock glasses (it was the 70s!) and my brother, who was four, won a bottle of Liebfraumilch. We were delighted to be the ones giving a gift to our parents for once, that they hadn’t had to buy themselves. Surely a prize for one of the family is a prize for all the family?

stichguru · 29/09/2024 15:05

The organisers won't be able to totally predict how many kids & adults will play. Once they swap the prize for one, they have to be able to do it for EVERYONE who wins something inappropriate. That means either they need to have a child & adult prize suitable for EVERY winning ticket, which probably means they raise no money from the tombola, or they run out of child prizes too soon and then have to stop more children playing. How about as her mum you just buy the wine from her, rather than moaning about a bunch of probably volunteers trying to fundraise for something?!

NashvilleQueen · 29/09/2024 15:06

It doesn't sound like you think you're being unreasonable notwithstanding the fairly consistent responses. So I think tombolas are probably best avoided going forward.

JaneGrint · 29/09/2024 15:08

That’s how tombolas work 🤷‍♀️

Sometimes you get good prizes and sometimes you get prizes that you don’t want or can’t use.

When my DC win alcohol at tombolas, I thank them for winning me and DH a bottle of wine (or whatever), and then give them the choice of some money for another go at the tombola or some sweets. The DC are usually happy with that.

what happens if a child won the teddy that had been given to your daughter

That's not how a Tombola works. No-one else would have won the teddy once it was gone from the table.

I agree. God forbid she ever discovers raffles, or we’ll be at this all over again.

MissSkegness1951 · 29/09/2024 15:13

Entitled nonsense that has no place in participating in a luck of the draw tombola.

@LionMummy8 is acting like it wasn't handed to an adult but opened, handed to her DD while the staff gathered round chanting "down it, down it"

AdviceNeeded2024 · 29/09/2024 15:16

In all seriousness @LionMummy8 you need to teach your daughter it’s ok to be disappointed at times or that you don’t always get what you want, you don't want her to grow up being entitled do you?

BodyKeepingScore · 29/09/2024 15:16

You win what you win. I'd have thanked my DD for winning me a bottle of wine 😉

sweeneytoddsrazor · 29/09/2024 15:17

LionMummy8 · 29/09/2024 14:36

You just swap the numbers on the prize, that’s all. It takes 2 seconds.

so if you give her a child friendly prize. You take the number off the child prize and then put it on the bottle of wine, sorted.

This would be the easiest thing to do after a child had won alcohol.

Edited

Yes I know that but that doesn't stop another child picking the number that was originally the Teddy but is now wine

Delphiniumandlupins · 29/09/2024 15:17

I wouldn't want to buy a ticket for a tombola where the stall-holder just changed the tickets around on a whim. I would think their friends would be getting all the good prizes. Obviously you now swap your daughter's bottle of wine for a bag of chocolate buttons.

LittleMousewithcloggson · 29/09/2024 15:19

One of the most ridiculous things I’ve ever read.
You say well done to your daughter for winning a prize, tell her you will buy it off her and give her the money for sweets or something
Otherwise she will end up as entitled as you sound!
Tombolas are exempt from licensing laws and as long as the alcohol was not handed directly to the child - which you admit it wasn’t - it’s fine
Accept it and grow up

MrsClatterbuck · 29/09/2024 15:19

Op Am I being unreasonable
Everyone Yes
Op No I'm not

Intheoldendays · 29/09/2024 15:20

I'm a recovered alcoholic and I ALWAYS win alcohol. Even joked about it on holiday where there were about 500 tickets sold at a 'do' as was buying my tickets. Who won the massive bottle of spirits...? I'd rather have had the spa day but hey!

Cherrysoup · 29/09/2024 15:21

Dear god. Just give her another quid and drink the bloody wine.

isthismylifenow · 29/09/2024 15:21

InSpainTheRain · 29/09/2024 15:02

Why wouldn't you say well done to her for winning the wine and give her the choice of a toy or whatever to a certain value yourself? Then you, or a friend (if you don't drink it) can enjoy the wine? Not seeing the big deal here.

Yip. Instead of this, OP makes a bit song and dance about it, now I assume her dd thinks she didn't win a good prize. Meanwhile she won a great prize, for someone else to enjoy.

What a 7 year old would take from this is that if we don't get want we want, we complain.

This could have made for a nice life lesson for a 7 year old. Except it didn't here 🙈

Congratulations on your recovery!

Thank you! 10 years plus now!

BarbedButterfly · 29/09/2024 15:30

I still remember winning a raffle at eight years old and my prize was an electric drill. I was thrilled!

I probably wouldn't have expected it but am surprised they didn't since the winner was a child.

Mumwithbaggage · 29/09/2024 15:32

One of my dds and 3 of her school friends were in y6 and won a local raft race. Their prize? A case of wine! Prize was handed out to many giggles by a local celeb - they beat a team of fire fighters in the final! We were thrilled - I probably still owe dd a replacement prize...

That’s amazing! I don’t know you but I am proud of you 😊

harrumphh · 29/09/2024 15:40

I mean technically they should have a gambling licence to run a tombola because they're a business (they may already have one if they have fruit machines), and secondly they shouldn't be selling alcohol to children (which is what they've effectively done, because that would be far too easy a loophole otherwise). And before anyone jumps on me, I don't make the laws.

They should have planned ahead and swapped it out for a non-alcoholic version if requested at the very least.

sharpclawedkitten · 29/09/2024 15:40

My son's school used to have an adult tombola and a child one! Avoids this problem.

Understandable for a school. This was in a pub though!
