To say that people in Sussex are awful?

Can't quite put my finger on what it is, but generally in Sussex when working or travelling there, whether in towns, coast or countryside, people do seem to have this awful, cold and arrogant demeanour about them that they are somehow something they aren't?

Just seem to look down their noses at anyone else and must say I don't think you see that as much even in London!

Must add as well, there do seem to be a rather large proportion of quite aggressive elderly ex-Londoners who almost come across as ex football hooligans?

AIBU or is there something I'm missing? anyone know anywhere else like this?🤔

Of course you are being unreasonable - not everyone in Sussex is the same!

ExquisiteEmelda · 19/09/2024 15:25

Yes, you are correct. Everyone in Sussex is exactly the same, one hive mind if you will.

Arlanymor · 19/09/2024 15:25

Which Sussex? There are two. You missed that in your initial denigration of two whole counties that you just pass through and spend no substantial time in.

poppyzbrite4 · 19/09/2024 15:26

I come from a county which has been stereotyped for years. I'm often bemused at people's lack of critical thinking; they actually think everyone in a large county, is the same. Imagine that.

Well I'm in Sussex and I'm awful! So you could be right.
My Sussex town is very friendly - my northern mother, from a famously friendly chatty part of the country, always comments on how nice people are here.

squashyhat · 19/09/2024 15:27

Happy for you to stay away OP. We'll do fine without you.

Are you a Mancunian getting your revenge for the other thread?!

Shodan · 19/09/2024 15:28

That's so strange, because I was just thinking the same thing about people where you live, OP.

What are the odds eh?

There's an old saying of my dad's that I think may be pertinent here:

"If you met one arsehole today, very well, you met an arsehole. If you meet arseholes all day every day....then you need to consider the possibility that you, in fact, are the arsehole."

Tbf I'm pretty horrible as well

LlynTegid · 19/09/2024 15:29

There are one or two communities in Sussex that have gone downhill over recent years, but I have not been to them and my experience of Sussex is very positive.

Had a holiday there last year and a weekend there this.

Definitely!

ISeriouslyDoubtIt · 19/09/2024 15:31

I expect they've singled you out for this treatment OP.
Do you mean both East and West Sussex? And does this behaviour stop at the county border ie do you find people are different in say the Weald of Kent?

SilenceInside · 19/09/2024 15:31

West or East? Or both. It's really quite a large part of southern England. What is it that changes when Sussex becomes Surrey, Hampshire, Kent, Greater London...?

I'm imagining this is a wind up as PP have said.

SecondFavouriteDinosaur · 19/09/2024 15:32

Absolutely agree OP. We went to Camber Sands once and it was absolutely heaving with octogenarians chanting football songs down the High Street. Couldn’t move for them.

Peonies12 · 19/09/2024 15:35

Given there's one of you, and many many people in Sussex, surely you must realise it's you that's the problem.

HornyHornersPinkyWinky · 19/09/2024 15:38

Are you from Manchester OP? Are you pissed off because of the other thread....

I can't speak for all of them, but we patrol the borders of Surrey with pitchforks and water cannons, demanding excellent manners from all incomers, especially those from rough counties like 'Sussex'.

Where I'm from doesn't matter! Not from there, and although there is an unfriendly 'snooty south' stereotype in the UK, a lot of people there seem very unfriendly or have a very 'fake friendly' demeanour

RisingSunn · 19/09/2024 15:41

The only area that I’ve heard negative stories about is St Leonard’s on Sea. Mainly racism - in schools/shops etc.

But the town is obviously a small part of Sussex. (East?)

Ha ha, so the ones who are being friendly are being fake 🤣😆🤣
