To say that people in Sussex are awful?

Can't quite put my finger on what it is, but generally in Sussex when working or travelling there, whether in towns, coast or countryside, people do seem to have this awful, cold and arrogant demeanour about them that they are somehow something they aren't?

Just seem to look down their noses at anyone else and must say I don't think you see that as much even in London!

Must add as well, there do seem to be a rather large proportion of quite aggressive elderly ex-Londoners who almost come across as ex football hooligans?

AIBU or is there something I'm missing? anyone know anywhere else like this?🤔

Are you a Mancunian getting your revenge for the other thread?!

😂

Starlight1979 · 19/09/2024 16:38

What's going on today?! Why is everyone hurling abuse at places?! 😂

My auntie lives in St Mary’s Bay and moved there from London with her Scottish DH years ago. DB’s close friend from school moved there too a few years ago. I do know a man who’s from Sussex - going towards Canterbury, perfectly nice. Maybe a very slight “I’m better than you” sort of man but Sussex is very big.

We did always find it a bit strange as Rye is very twee and chocolate box looking and seemed to have antiques shops manned by elderly ladies.

In Dymchurch etc you’ll get the far right Tommy Robinson types, some are quieter than others but then in Hythe I came across a boutique owned by a mixed race women. So it’s cheek by jowl really.

St Mary's Bay, Dymchurch, Hythe and Canterbury are all in Kent so probably aren't full of truly awful people.

I love going to East Sussex.
I love all the winding lane, now with lots of pot holes.
I wish I lived there. There are grumpy rude peoole everywhere.
So you're not being reasonable.

But we always have such a warm welcome for Catholics. 🔥🎆

Yes I love a good bonfire night and Sussex ones are the best.

LardoBurrows · 19/09/2024 16:45

I know what you mean Op. I live in Kent and I dread having to cross the border into East Sussex where everyone I meet looks askance at me or ignores me with a haughty look designed to keep me in my place.

I am always so glad to get back to Kent, where, the minute my car is over the border everyone is out lining the streets with bunting and smiling and cheering to welcome me back from that awful other place.

CatkinToadflax · 19/09/2024 16:45

I’m truly horrific. I was lovely when I lived in Buckinghamshire though. I had a personality transplant when we were following the removals lorry round the M25.

Blackhorse32 · 19/09/2024 15:25

Of course you are being unreasonable - not everyone in Sussex is the same!

From a quick scan of the title I thought we were back to Harry and his Mrs!

ifonly4 · 19/09/2024 16:47

I live in what many would consider a 'posh' town. Not sure how anyone from Sussex would view me, but I really don't have that view of them.

MysteriousUsername · 19/09/2024 16:47

I've lived in Sussex all my life and I'm horrid. Stay away from me, everyone. Keep out!

I have friends in East Sussex who are members of the countywide bonfire society! They are fab events.

Oh no.
Born in Brighton and my family too, all the way back to the start of the records in the 1500's.
I'm Superbad 😈

You a rare breed indeed so few left

Used to know a very elderly man from brighton [in his mid 90s] from a long established family and he had a completely different accent - almost a west country burr which was apparently the original Sussex accent before it was diluted by incomers

Lovely man full of wisdom and humour

ilovemoney · 19/09/2024 16:49

I live in Sussex OP. Both east and west are quite big counties. The coast and towns can be a mix of very very rich and very very poor Despite being quite near London Sussex was always a muddy rural remote feeling place. Large swathes still are rural and feel remote despite the relatively quick trains into London.
In history Sussex was known for sheep, mud and bad roads.
Perhaps some of that still lingers. It did have its own culture and language so perhaps that separateness still lingers a bit as well.
I think East Sussex has the highest proportion of older people in England and older people can be grumpier generally.
I don't think the people of Sussex are really friendly or outgoing, i do find them kind and polite though.

Boomer55 · 19/09/2024 16:49

I’m a Londoner but lived in Sussex for a while. In Rye. A few years. A lot of people were quite up themselves, and I moved back to London as soon as I could.

GiveMeSpanakopita · 19/09/2024 15:29

There's an old saying of my dad's that I think may be pertinent here:

"If you met one arsehole today, very well, you met an arsehole. If you meet arseholes all day every day....then you need to consider the possibility that you, in fact, are the arsehole."

That is fab !!

Sahara123 · 19/09/2024 16:51

Shodan · 19/09/2024 15:28

That's so strange, because I was just thinking the same thing about people where you live, OP.

What are the odds eh?

Brilliant!

My grandfather was proper Sussex (and several generations before him too- farming folk) and he had a hint of that accent. It’s a shame it’s died out now.

I'm sure they can be kind and polite when they need to, for example being served in a shop and the like, but generally day to day I definitely concur they are not friendly

mondaytosunday · 19/09/2024 16:53

No idea. People say London isn't friendly but it's the friendliest place I've lived, neighbours who look out for each other and always greet you with a smile, dog walkers in the park usually happy to stop and chat, even the Tesco delivery people are friendly! So I'm going to assume that you've just run into a few rotten apples.

LadyWiddiothethird · 19/09/2024 16:53

You don’t sound well travelled @iambeyonddone ,I grew up in. Surrey, went to school,in West Sussex. You weren’t even aware there is East and West Sussex!

I live in the Midlands now,but have lived alll over the U.K. and Europe, the place I found the most unfriendly was North Yorkshire, hated living there.

Accept we all like different Counties and it’s you who has a problem, not the people from Sussex!

Bumcake · 19/09/2024 16:54

Probably the people you meet have slipped over the border from Hampshire (yokels) or Kent (racists).

People in the county do seem to swear a lot though I must say! Is it something influenced by Brighton? It's all c+++ this and dick that, never seen so many people throwing C bombs around!😯

I’ve seen the word “cunt” (assuming that’s the word you mean) on MN than I have ever heard in real life. Surely not everyone on MN is from Sussex? I understand some Glaswegians and Australians are also fond of that particular swear word
