To say that people in Sussex are awful?

Can't quite put my finger on what it is, but generally in Sussex when working or travelling there, whether in towns, coast or countryside, people do seem to have this awful, cold and arrogant demeanour about them that they are somehow something they aren't?

Just seem to look down their noses at anyone else and must say I don't think you see that as much even in London!

Must add as well, there do seem to be a rather large proportion of quite aggressive elderly ex-Londoners who almost come across as ex football hooligans?

AIBU or is there something I'm missing? anyone know anywhere else like this?🤔

I only know one person from Sussex, never met any others. W Sussex to be exact. She’s perfectly lovely if a little opinionated. She now lives in Yorkshire, so maybe that’s why she’s lovely.

Are you from that particular location full of halfwits? Seems apt.

Yes I think I must be

luckily don’t live there anymore 😂

Ha ha, so the ones who are being friendly are being fake 🤣😆🤣

You've never encountered people in life where their demeanour seemed insincere..?🤔

Oh it's Sussex this month is it? Usually it's Surrey. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Surrey is pretty bad too, I have some family there 😁

Gettingannoyednow · 19/09/2024 15:56

I voted YABU because people everywhere are awful and I don't see why Sussex deserves special treatment.

Speedweed · 19/09/2024 15:56

Ha, yes OP, you are right on all counts.

We wunt be druv!

People are rarely not lovely in Yorkshire, very different atmosphere😁

Are the people offended, those that moved from London to Sussex to get a bigger house? Or those that were born there (like me)? 😂I am not offended, East Sussex is full of a lot of awful stuck up people

I think most people object to generalisations and no… I am from the other side of the bridge and still think it’s bloody rude and ignorant to broad brush with nobby stereotypes. You were born in one place and grew up around terrible people it appears - sucks for you but it’s not the whole place. And frankly attitudes such as yours fuel the whole north/south divide bollocks as well.

midgetastic · 19/09/2024 15:57

If you find the entire county/s awful perhaps it's just you and your inability to communicate and establish rapport with people who are not just like you

Pressthespacebar · 19/09/2024 15:57

I moved to Sussex from the midlands and absolutely love it here, been here twenty years now.

probably helps that I’m from the midlands wnd anywhere’s nice compared to there 😬

I know an absolute cunt from Yorkshire. Beat his girlfriend up.

Oh a north and south divider? Gotcha. Go into politics, your attitude helps stoke imaginary rivalries.

Pfft.

Sussex is an amateur.

I was born and grew up in East Sussex, and have lived all over the country

Sadly I agree, it’s very snooty and rude!

Rude is a good way to describe it! People either looking through you like you're invisible or virtually giving themselves whiplash looking away if you dare to make eye contact with them (to name but a few examples!)😂

There was a social cleansing programme by the last government, which forcibly moved large numbers of poorer families out of London to southeast towns. That, combined with "austerity" cuts, as had a negative effect on lots of the southeast, as it put pressure on services.

Some of Sussex is pirate land. There's even a pirate day here. Is that what you're thinking of, OP?

belindawolves · 19/09/2024 15:59

@Arlanymor West Sussex, specific place has actually been mentioned in this thread although I'm not confirming which one.

What don't you like about the midlands?

I probably mentioned it. I lived in Horsham for a decade.

Where did I make a divide. I mentioned an area I also knew well where I found people much friendlier 🤔

We like your airport! Cardiff airport was totally built in the wrong place!

belindawolves · 19/09/2024 16:01

@SecondFavouriteDinosaur I was before I moved away from there 10 years ago aged 18. I didn't think that I was at the time but after moving away, I realised I was much friendlier than when I was there and the people where I grew up were very unfriendly and rude.

SilverPearl · 19/09/2024 16:02

It’s the twittens & pond puddings that make us cold & arrogant.

belindawolves · 19/09/2024 16:02

@Arlanymor very close to Horsham, perhaps one could call it adjacent.

Oops seem to have hit a nerve. I have lived in a lot of places in the uk, north and south though. Definitely a thing in East Sussex with rude people

Dolliesdisasterousdayout · 19/09/2024 16:02

I’ve never been but sounds like my kind of place!
