To say that people in Sussex are awful?

Can't quite put my finger on what it is, but generally in Sussex when working or travelling there, whether in towns, coast or countryside, people do seem to have this awful, cold and arrogant demeanour about them that they are somehow something they aren't?

Just seem to look down their noses at anyone else and must say I don't think you see that as much even in London!

Must add as well, there do seem to be a rather large proportion of quite aggressive elderly ex-Londoners who almost come across as ex football hooligans?

AIBU or is there something I'm missing? anyone know anywhere else like this?🤔

Wow, thank you for starting this thread OP, I have been very poorly today and all this laughing has cheered me right up.
Special mention to OneTC!
Croydon! I love when there is a big news story from Croydon and somehow the BBC or guardian always interview a local resident who says something like " I heard all the sirens but I have lived in Croydon for years so took no notice". One quote was something like " I told my partner when I heard the explosion that's the revolution starting." I think residents of Croydon like yourself must be rather wonderful.

Not from there, and although there is an unfriendly 'snooty south' stereotype in the UK,

This is such an ignorant comment to make.

You've never heard people in more northern parts of the UK and Scotland call more southern people rather aloof?

Of course you are being unreasonable

There's an old saying of my dad's that I think may be pertinent here:

"If you met one arsehole today, very well, you met an arsehole. If you meet arseholes all day every day....then you need to consider the possibility that you, in fact, are the arsehole."

Either that or you work in a law firm so have to work amongst them!

Deathraystare · 19/09/2024 16:17

Well a lot of people in Sussex, particularly East came down from London!

I loved in St Leonards for a few years. Did not like it but not down to the people.

Not been to Surrey, what's the stereotype there then?

OMG if you think Sussex people are horrible JUST YOU WAIT till you meet Surrey people!

Ok joking aside, my mum grew up in a village in sussex ( but was born in London) admittedly it was the 50s but she said the real locals were quite xenophobic . Hostile to anyone who was not locally bred. She put it down to the Norman invasion and a general suspicion of outsiders.

Probably lots of places were like that then- if you were from the next village or street, you were considered an 'outsider'.

Waitingfordoggo · 19/09/2024 16:19

I’ve been in Sussex (West) all my life and I’m an absolute c*nt so yes, you’re right OP.

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 19/09/2024 16:19

No, we lived in East Sussex for around 5 years, and this was not my experience. Lives in the Midlands now. It's ridiculous to generalise about people in this way.

I lived in west Sussex for a few years, mid-2000s. I've voted YABU because of course, and made some good friends. However, this rang some loud bells 😂 "quite aggressive elderly ex-Londoners who almost come across as ex football hooligans".

I definitely recognise this stereotype from my time there! You'd probably find similar in all the Home Counties.

Just4thisthreadtoday · 19/09/2024 16:21

OneTC · 19/09/2024 15:49

I used to live in Sussex but was exiled to Croydon as part of a cultural exchange programme. It was because I wasn't sufficiently awful.

@OneTC

well, it shouldn't take you too long to get sufficiently awful to be allowed back!!

JessyCarr · 19/09/2024 16:22

Too right OP! I was born in Haughty Hove, adjacent to Bitchy Brighton, and was therefore a snooty Sussex southerner from birth. Confusingly, however, half my DNA is from Yorkshire, and so I am as warm and salt-of-the-earth as a fresh Hovis loaf in equal measure.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 19/09/2024 16:22

My auntie lives in St Mary’s Bay and moved there from London with her Scottish DH years ago. DB’s close friend from school moved there too a few years ago. I do know a man who’s from Sussex - going towards Canterbury, perfectly nice. Maybe a very slight “I’m better than you” sort of man but Sussex is very big.

We did always find it a bit strange as Rye is very twee and chocolate box looking and seemed to have antiques shops manned by elderly ladies.

In Dymchurch etc you’ll get the far right Tommy Robinson types, some are quieter than others but then in Hythe I came across a boutique owned by a mixed race women. So it’s cheek by jowl really.

Findmebythesea1 · 19/09/2024 16:23

Im from East Sussex & like most places I imagine there’s a good mix of rude/stuck up/snooty (lots of areas here are money) but then there’s loads of really nice friendly people and plenty of council estates. It’s a good mix. I think maybe you’ve encountered a few of the former and are generalising op. You can’t really believe an entire county of people are all dicks 🤣

People in the county do seem to swear a lot though I must say! Is it something influenced by Brighton? It's all c+++ this and dick that, never seen so many people throwing C bombs around!😯

But all the best people live in Surrey! Honestly OP don’t you know anything? [Sighs insincerely, twirls hair]

I loved in St Leonards for a few years. Did not like it but not down to the people.

My stepdad had a seaside holiday flat in St Leonards for a few years, perfectly pleasant but would get people being sent to Hastings who were homeless/unemployed on some scheme so that didn’t help things.

friendlycat · 19/09/2024 16:27

I tend to think that anyone who refers to the "snooty south" has a massive chip on their shoulder.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 19/09/2024 16:28

A lot of people in Sussex where eg hop picking took place hated the east end Londoners who picked the hops. Probably inbred farmer types. Doesn’t help when all your ancestors are from a little village and never move and rarely travel.

Threewheeler1 · 19/09/2024 16:31

Oh no.
Born in Brighton and my family too, all the way back to the start of the records in the 1500's.
I'm Superbad 😈

Witchyandtwitchy · 19/09/2024 16:34

I’m from Sussex and I am indeed an arsehole.
There’s far too many bloody people in this part of the country so I suggest you don’t visit again.
Thank you

I moved to Cambridgeshire a few years ago and found some people very unfriendly. And don't get me started on the arrogant drivers and entitled bikers.

MarkWithaC · 19/09/2024 16:36

You lost me at 'even in London'; I live in London and really don't encounter arrogance or coldness or people looking down their noses very often.
