To say that people in Sussex are awful?

Can't quite put my finger on what it is, but generally in Sussex when working or travelling there, whether in towns, coast or countryside, people do seem to have this awful, cold and arrogant demeanour about them that they are somehow something they aren't?

Just seem to look down their noses at anyone else and must say I don't think you see that as much even in London!

Must add as well, there do seem to be a rather large proportion of quite aggressive elderly ex-Londoners who almost come across as ex football hooligans?

AIBU or is there something I'm missing? anyone know anywhere else like this?🤔

Where did I make a divide. I mentioned an area I also knew well where I found people much friendlier 🤔

You seem to think you know everywhere well. [insert patronising pondering emoji that everyone hates]

iambeyonddone · 19/09/2024 16:03

People need to have spend a good amount of time there to understand it - Rude, snooty, stuck-up, are all very good ways to describe the majority. They almost come across socially awkward because of it!😂

'unjustified arrogance' for a lot of reasons is how I could describe them

This thread is hilarious.
I'm on the borders of West Sussex, in Hampshire and we are all very snooty here too. I moved here from SW London to get a big house so I'm the worst type obviously. I also used to live in the Midlands - way too far from the sea for my liking - that's what I didn't like about it and it wasn't snooty enough either.

Runningupthecurtains · 19/09/2024 16:04

We came down from London nearly 20 years ago. The people are such arses that despite knowing the people moving in were coming down from London we were greeted by a bottle of champagne on the doorstep from one set of neighbours, home baked cake from another neighbour and a message from another neighbour to say to give her a knock as she had popped a casserole in the slow cooker for us so we could have something to eat without have to cook/ find a local takeaway etc. this is the level of dreadful around here. Totally utterly nice, how terrible!

Yes, you are correct. Everyone in Sussex is exactly the same, one hive mind if you will.

Hove mind?

MasterBeth · 19/09/2024 16:04

Have you heard how they pronounce school... "skkuule"?! Yuk

I’ve been here over a decade and haven’t noticed anything amiss.

Surrey and Cheshire, on the other hand…

There's an old saying of my dad's that I think may be pertinent here:

"If you met one arsehole today, very well, you met an arsehole. If you meet arseholes all day every day....then you need to consider the possibility that you, in fact, are the arsehole."

Yes definitely so!
Generally people are friendly -London less so {I'm a Londoner} but for sure I know someone and every house~share they have there are serious problems.

I'm beginning to wonder if it's them 🫣

belindawolves · 19/09/2024 16:06

@MasterBeth I'm pleased to say that after 10 years of moving from West Sussex, I now pronounce school differently Grin

Are you a Mancunian getting your revenge for the other thread?!
I have lived in both Manchester and Sussex. I didn’t realise how unfortunate I am until today!

belindawolves · 19/09/2024 16:07

@Richard1985 😂

Doggymummar · 19/09/2024 16:07

I'm in mid Sussex, the one everyone forgets about and yes we are just awful.

Hydrangea58 · 19/09/2024 16:07

Some people are nice, some are not, wherever you happen to live or travel to.

In West Sussex and Hampshire we don't say school, we just say Independent. We also never get our children to do homework - it's prep.

Ok joking aside, my mum grew up in a village in sussex ( but was born in London) admittedly it was the 50s but she said the real locals were quite xenophobic . Hostile to anyone who was not locally bred. She put it down to the Norman invasion and a general suspicion of outsiders.

tobee · 19/09/2024 15:54

Oh it's Sussex this month is it? Usually it's Surrey. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Not been to Surrey, what's the stereotype there then?

But we always have such a warm welcome for Catholics. 🔥🎆

My ex- husband is from East Grinstead way… he’s an arse, but it’s not the fault of Forest Row!

bringincrazyback · 19/09/2024 16:11

What an idiotic thing to start a thread about. Yes, of course every single person in an entire county is exactly the same. 🙄

friendlycat · 19/09/2024 16:11

Not from there, and although there is an unfriendly 'snooty south' stereotype in the UK,

This is such an ignorant comment to make.

Hunglikeapolevaulter · 19/09/2024 16:13

What a load of shite. I lived in Sussex and miss how friendly, chatty and down to earth most of the people were.

rainbowstardrops · 19/09/2024 16:14

I live in Sussex and I'm not snobby or rude at all and neither are my acquaintances or bestest chums.
Anyway, must dash to put little Tarquins quinoa on for his dinner. We aren't heathens like some of the visitors to our county that prefer a Greggs for their tea. Lowlifes!
