To say that people in Sussex are awful?

Can't quite put my finger on what it is, but generally in Sussex when working or travelling there, whether in towns, coast or countryside, people do seem to have this awful, cold and arrogant demeanour about them that they are somehow something they aren't?

Just seem to look down their noses at anyone else and must say I don't think you see that as much even in London!

Must add as well, there do seem to be a rather large proportion of quite aggressive elderly ex-Londoners who almost come across as ex football hooligans?

AIBU or is there something I'm missing? anyone know anywhere else like this?🤔

I agree. I'm actually a manc, I moved to a village in West Sussex/mid Sussex

I've gone from the most friendliest school mums to being treated like I'm invisible.
I introduced myself on the WhatsApp group to get "Lol, see you around"

Atleast when I drive into Brighton it's friendly enough

Rather move back to the part of London I spent my twenties in.

bozzabollix · 19/09/2024 19:53

I went to Rye last weekend and spoke to most of the people in a small cafe. They must’ve been ok with me as I only come from neighbouring Kent. They did all have lap dogs though, that was noted.

Havingtoomuchfun · 19/09/2024 21:09

My issue with my part of East Sussex is all the annoying people who've moved into my town from London and elsewhere.

Why buy a 2 bed in greater London, when, for the same money, you can purchase a 4 bed AND a 1 bed rental by the sea?

Can't stand the gentrification that's been taking place.

O come on now you seem a bit over qualified!

AboutVattime · 19/09/2024 22:14

You've just been to the wrong places . ! My village is lush and filled with all the wonderful community minded, kind generous people missing from the other parts of sussex you have been to. !

We get each others shopping as we are miles from a town, take each other to medical appointments, feed each others pets if late home .. spend a huge amount of our spare time running activities to benefit our village.

My only complaint is that we are not as racially diverse as I would like to. My kids are Eurasian.. but that's as far as it goes . We have no black families although we have a single black man who comes to ride on the farm .. so perhaps a start - if black families feel the countryside isn't for them .

Where I'm from doesn't matter! Not from there, and although there is an unfriendly 'snooty south' stereotype in the UK, a lot of people there seem very unfriendly or have a very 'fake friendly' demeanour

Maybe you’re not very likeable?

VestaTilley · 19/09/2024 22:29

YABVU. My DF is from there and he’s absolutely lovely. His family go back there centuries. My late DGM was Sussex woman, and loved the Downs all her life. One of the best women I’ve ever known and I miss her dreadfully.

You, OP, are ignorant and rude.

I moved down here via Buckinghamshire. I found people in the area of Bucks I lived to be very cold, (I come from the warm, friendly Midlands)

Moved down to Sussex and found my warm friendly people again

Yes Buckinghamshire is famously cold and hard hearted as a county. We certainly would have struggled to manage your delightful Midlands combination of cheeriness and tuneful accent. It’s probably a good thing that we drove you out to take refuge in the amiable climes of Sussex.

I didn't say all of Buckinghamshire, it's a large county, just the bit I happened to be in. I don't condemn a whole place (unlike the OP) just because a bit is unfriendly

This is about as stupid as saying that one twelfth of the population has certain characteristics or attributes because of their star sign. Are you being goady just for shits and giggles?

pilates · 20/09/2024 05:44

I agree @DragonGypsyDoris it’s bonkers

FishersGate · 20/09/2024 06:42

Hilarious I live in west sussex absolutely nothing wrong with people here. There are certain areas where people are considered 'posh' certain less attractive areas to live but that's like every other county in the county.

My garden backs onto the south downs and I can see the sea from thr top of it and drive to the beach in 10 mins. 1.20 from London on the train beautiful place to live.

Although people on holiday generally think we are posh on holiday due to southern accents

HappySats · 20/09/2024 06:53

iambeyonddone · 19/09/2024 16:20

Btw I'm from Cambridgeshire not Manc for those asking.😊

I am from Sussex and my SIL is from and lives in Cambridgeshire…is this you DSIL?
😬🤣

I know a cave in the Outer Hebrides you could move to. We haven't had a hermit since St Cuthbert, so go for it
Then you don't have to make value judgements about anyone from anywhere.

PoachesPeaches · 20/09/2024 07:50

I live on the border and take pleasure in telling people I live in Surrey actually. Its tongue in cheek.

I'm from Sussex and my Dad is Northern. It's a lovely county, beautiful countryside. I think the snootiness just comes from people being busy, lack of time to make conversation, possibly a degree of miserableness due to house prices, but there are also some good communities. Possibly not as welcoming, as why would you move here when house prices are so high. Northerners are more hospitable.

BobbyBiscuits · 20/09/2024 09:24

My auntie was from Hastings and she always moaned it was a shit hole. But she was a bit of a snobby cow. Is that in Sussex?
I've been to Brighton in summer and it's just rammed busy, and the beach isn't that nice. But I've never thought people from there were rude particularly. They say it's similar to London in some ways so maybe people are not as friendly as in the middle of the countryside.
I always thought of Sussex as having a better reputation than Essex and Kent. I went to Margate once and the people there didn't seem awful or anything.

Hastings is in Sussex.

Samcro · 20/09/2024 09:42

well not only do I live in sussex, I live in Brighton and grew up in surrey.

so I am triple bad.
but maybe not and its just the op and people reacting to her bigotry.

No I am awful and having previously lived in the north, the Midlands and London I love it in beautiful Sussex, I find the people lovely but that probably means they are just a awful as I am.

newnamethanks · 20/09/2024 10:11

Nearly at the peak, samcro. For full marks, move to the Cotswolds.

Violinist64 · 20/09/2024 10:22

I don't live in Sussex, but I have friends who do and I always enjoy my visits down there. I have found that, just like everywhere else, there are friendly and not so friendly people. In addition to this, my friends live five minutes' walk from the beach and the train journey from Brighton to their town is beautiful as you get glimpses of the sea all the time.

I think she's in the car now on her way....

When friends from Down South visited us Up North we used to tell them to turn off the M6 when they hit the cobbles and look out for the whippets.

I wonder which bit you’re in @whatistheworld. There are definitely a few Brexity pensioners about but I assume they exist everywhere since Brexit voters were in the majority! I know hardly any religious people here though (and those I do know are elderly, which- again- is probably the pattern nationally).

Mid Sussex

They are young, and families with children and old pensioners, our street empties on a sunday morning!
We are also fairly close to the Scientologist centre, the morman temple and all the lay lines that meet in East Grinstead.
I have never experienced it any where else.
