Men with boats cheat

The subject says it all!

I’ve long believed that men only buy boats to use them as floating love shacks. My friend thinks I’m being ridiculous and says boats are just a great lifestyle choice. Recently, she told me her husband is thinking of buying a boat, and I couldn’t help but give her that look! She insists he’d never cheat, but in my experience, every man I’ve known who had a boat wasn’t exactly faithful.

Honestly, if my husband bought one, I might even consider it grounds for divorce!

So, am I being unreasonable? Can men own boats without it leading to adultery, or am I totally right to be suspicious? Should men with boats just wear a t-shirt that says, "Don’t trust me?"

(For the record, this doesn’t apply to fishermen making a living or people who live on boats!)

What kind of boats do you mean? If it's something like this then fair play to them tbh

That'd foil their attempts.Grin

Who on earth is using an allotment for a love-shack?

The cast of "Last of the Summer Wine."

KnottyKnitting · 16/09/2024 00:20

Erm- we have a boat- we sail on it together all over the place. Belong to a large sociable club at the marina where everyone knows everyone else so would be hard to cheat! ( boat also has AIS so would know if it had been taken out and where! )

I’d like a boat but my husband has expressly said no. This is a good sign isn’t it?

Definitely a double fluff! 😂

Duckingella · 16/09/2024 00:24

Probably more likely to be used by their teenagers as shag pads in order to avoid being caught out by their parents

If the boats a rocking don't go a knocking......

SkiingIsHeaven · 16/09/2024 00:53

OP, what is your opinion on women who buy boats?

TheOliveGoose · 16/09/2024 01:00

I grew up on a small, isolated island. Everyone had a boat or you would be pretty stuck. There was fuck all else to do there though so maybe everyone was shagging each other.

DramaAlpaca · 16/09/2024 01:34

DH has a fishing boat, in a style known as a lake boat. It's just a boat, with a couple of seats, not a creature comfort to its name.

I refuse to go out in it, so I can't imagine any other woman finding it remotely enticing.

RedheadedSoulStealer · 16/09/2024 02:10

Hahahaha I grew up in NZ and my parents and their close friends had boats.

As far as I know out of the five couples, three of the husbands ended up being 100% confirmed cheats.

Make of that what you will.

ManhattanPopcorn · 16/09/2024 02:18

"but in my experience, every man I’ve known who had a boat wasn’t exactly faithful."

It never crossed my mind before but now that you mention it....

Abi86 · 16/09/2024 02:27

You’re not only being unreasonable, you’re being ridiculous.

Hateam · 16/09/2024 02:34

This is the stupidest thing I 've read on Mumsnet and, as you can imagine, the bar for that is very high.

I assume it's a joke.

Frightening to think that 16% of people agree.

MaggieBsBoat · 16/09/2024 02:41

My friend’s husband bought a boat and then left her for the neighbour. Your hypothesis is true!!!

iceandcheques · 16/09/2024 02:52

From my experience, the majority of men cheat (so depressing) but boat owning didn't have anything to do with it. I know a few boat owners who are more interested in genuinely pottering on their boats not cheating. You could just say anything a man could own (golf clubs!) as it the being male part that they have in common. And yes, women cheat too...

Ok this is giving me vibes of a conversation I was once party to. I chatting with John a professional acquaintance at an event and he was telling me how fab his wife was and all about his lovely family. I was single at time and thinking that’s the sort of relationship I want. Anyway Ian a mutual acquaintance appears and (boasted) he’s just spent two weeks “having fun” on his boat in the med with male friends whilst his wife was on a yoga retreat. I thought how Ian’s simpler life (and more together relationship) sounded nicer. I later relayed this exchange to the Mat guy I was dating who immediately explained I’d misunderstood - Ian was saying he was shagging other women, that’s what men do with boats, they’re for pulling. And that Ian was boasting about it. I realised Mat is the sort of man who would have a boat if he had the money. Mat was a dick.

ChampagneLassie · 16/09/2024 03:20

Despite story above I didn’t see boats as some common link. However Almost ever man I’ve dated for any length of time has either had a boat or aspired to. I almost bought my DP a boat for his 40th! 🤦‍♀️

ChampagneLassie · 16/09/2024 03:21

Johns simpler life!

ChampagneLassie · 16/09/2024 03:23

So if my DP remains boatless have I got a better chance of him remaining faithful?

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 16/09/2024 03:31

It's true right enough.

It can begin quite innocently with a rubber ring at the local swimming pool as a small boy, before progressing to a paddle board as an adolescent, and then before you know it you have a lothario with a cabin cruiser fitted out with a water bed and mirrored ceiling.

At least they can be easily identified, and hence avoided, by their faux captain's hat and nautical tattoos.

Jenasaurus · 16/09/2024 03:42

Men who go on golf holidays, well they are certainly dodgy

Giving me flashbacks of realizing that both my brother and I both used my dad's camper for teenage hookups. I thought I was so cleaver...

NothingThat · 16/09/2024 04:14

Yes, I submit my ex boss for anecdata.
Beginning of the week you hear him on the phone telling someone he'd have to pop down to Buelieu this weekend to keep an eye on the yacht, bit of maintenance.
Years later, when he came to sell it, turns out it was in a terrible state, hadn't actually sailed for years.
His ex-wife, long term mistress, a one night stand, sun set mistress and at least three half siblings were identified at the funeral.
