She bought the same coat as me.

I treated myself to a new coat and I finally wore it today as it actually felt like the right weather.

Met a friend for dinner and she said how nice it was where did I get it. She then got out her phone and bought it.

I feel a bit annoyed. It’s a coat so an item of clothing that you wear a lot, I wouldn’t be bothered if it was say a top or jeans - but I won’t want to turn up when I meet her both wearing the same thing. Aibu?

When you go out with someone, you can take it off if going in the car/indoors. Or if someone simply can’t possibly wear the same coat as someone else, wear a different coat around them. Problem solved.

She shouldn't have to, she should be able to wear the coat whenever she wishes to!

and her friend should be able to wear whatever coat she wants as well.

allmyliesaretrue · 14/09/2024 19:06

I'd be telling her in no uncertain terms she is not to wear it when they are meeting up!

Thereislightattheendofthetunnel · 14/09/2024 19:10

Tbf I was taken by surprise by the fact that she decided to buy the coat on the spot in front of you. I would have done that at home.

However, if you knew she has a form for asking and copying you, I would have worn it in a different occasion where she could not have seen it.

KaneelStokjes · 14/09/2024 19:12

I had a work colleague buy the same coat as me when it was still on sale and wear it to work last year.
She stopped wearing it after people noticed and mentioned that when styled differently, the coat didn't seem to wear the same... personally, not a bother to me. Wear whatever you want, but other people will take notice when you run in the same circle!

CrowleyKitten · 14/09/2024 19:15

I really don't see the big deal. why do people even care if someone is wearing the same mass produced garment as them? if it bothers you that much, buy from charity shops so that you're not wearing what is currently in the shops

You don't get to dictate what other people wear.

YANBU OP

And I like your spirited replies to the meanies on here!

xyz111 · 14/09/2024 20:06

I don't understand why people are giving you a hard time op. If it's a friend you see regularly, of course you'll look odd walking down the street together wearing exactly the same coat. Especially if it's not just a plain black one for example. Some people on here just like a dig I'm sure.

I’ve a copycat —frenemy— friend. She bought the same coat as me. She admired my coat, and I said ‘thanks, I love it!’ I didn’t expect her to appear the very next day wearing a identikit charcoal wrap coat on the school run! Buying copycat clothes isn’t the same as liking the same film or enjoying the same book. Clothes choices reflect our personal sense of identity, and it feels a bit hijacked to have someone adopt your look.

If a friend was wearing a coat I LOVED are you suggesting that I am 'prohibited' from ordering it if I wanted to and could afford to?,

I've been wanting a nice teal green/emerald green coat for years now but never found one the right colour, style, size, and/or fit for me. I have an image in my head of just what I'm looking for. If a friend had one and it met all the above requirements then you can bet your bottom dollar that I'd order it. I'm not giving that up simply because of 'friend rulez innit'
Just no.

Frazzledmummy123 · 14/09/2024 23:10

I can see a little where you are coming from, but I think she just really liked the coat so wanted to buy one for herself too. She might not have said it, but for all you know, she might not be planning to wear it when meeting you or when in your company. Maybe it was for other occasions, or to work, etc.

I doubt anyone else would really notice you both wearing the same coat anyway, and even if they did, you will both look different in it, and give the same coat an individual look.

MelodyFinch · 15/09/2024 09:32

I was going to copy what “Porridge is not slimming the way I make it”, said, do you think they will mind?
This has happened twice to me with a colleague and once she went home in my coat, leaving me with a too big one to go home in. I wonder if a stylish scarf would help you to individualise yours?

T1Dmama · 15/09/2024 15:28

I’d have joked and said ‘just don’t wear it when meeting me, or we’ll look like twins’

JMSA · 15/09/2024 15:32

My 18 year old daughter has always had this; friends copying what she buys.
It has always driven her irrationally nuts! Telling her 'take it as a compliment' just doesn't cut it.
I don't understand the annoyance personally, but I'm laidback and she can be highly strung.
But you're not alone, as it does seem to irritate the person on the receiving end!

Well she should have picked her own style of coat, not copycat her friend's! It's a dick move!

20 years ago, a colleague and I used to go shopping together. We ended up with a couple of the same outfits. It amused us to wear them to work on the same day. Yes, probably childish, but we liked very similar stuff.

I bought a really nice coat reduced from Costco, it’s an American brand that when I looked it up is quite expensive, my SIL screenshot a pic of me wearing it and used the picture in google lens to find the coat and then imported it from the US, in excess of £400 including import taxes. She smugly showed up to a family gathering in it and then was almost sick when I said “oh did you grab one when they were £19.97 in Costco?! Bargain eh? I wish they’d had black as well I’d have had two…”
my brother in law went mad at my husband the day after about why I should have told her how much it was and where from before she bought it from America (I think the cost was around $380) she NEVER once commented on it to me. It was bizarre!!

she does have form for this kind of thing though.

What if she'd bought the coat before seeing you in it & turned up to meet you wearing it? Would you still be P'd off then? Seems quite immature of you to not want to be seen in the same coat as your friend.
