Halloween duvet sets. WTF?

Saw in Home Bargains today. Took no notice of sizes or prices.

This is worse than Xmas bedding and cushions.

I think having themed bedding is pointless and besides you want a Xmas free room to chill out

Each year more and more HW and Xmas crap comes in the shops.

Some people must chuck out the crap each year and replace with new crap. Besides most people will not notice that if you reuse same crap each year.

You honestly think that there are people out there who buy bedding and just chuck it away, to buy more bedding the next year? What sort of people do you know?!

An advert came up for me today of a Halloween advent calendar! Wtf

Advent is a Christmas word. Should be a Halloween countdown calendar.

Besides why?

I just get so depressed with stuff like this. We buy so much stuff we just don’t need. Same with Christmas stuff.

DrusillaAndTheChaosDemon · 30/08/2024 17:18

Some of us are goths, and this is when we buy all of our homeware items

Know people who buy new baubles each year for their tree and chuck them out. My parents have a few baubles which are 35 years old. Most of the old ones broke (glass) or fallen to bits.

People buy too much crap & change home decor and furniture far too often.

The only thing i have thats vaguely themed is my tea towels - it was a set of 4 pairs of waffle tea towels with images on the borders - black cats, cherries, strawberries & holly leaves.

I tend to use the black cats in autumn, the Holly leaves for winter/Christmas, the strawberries & cherries in spring/summer

HowAmITheCatsGranny · 30/08/2024 17:24

I have some autumnal themed decor that I bring out each September / October.. I buy a few bits each year and some handmade stuff as well. A duvet cover isn’t something I’d go for, but I wouldn’t judge anybody else 🤷‍♀️

To be fair I think it was called that, it was me describing it as an advent calendar

PrincessSakura · 30/08/2024 17:26

Tk maxx had some gorgeous Halloween bedding! I’m very keen to grab myself one!

No, it isn't. It's a word meaning the coming or arrival of any person, thing or occasion considered significant. It has also been used in a liturgical context.

You can have the advent of agriculture, the advent of the steam engine, the advent of social media or the advent of the Modern Age. None of those require belief in a religious figure.

TeenLifeMum · 30/08/2024 17:30

It calls for a level of organisation I’m not prepared to aspire to! 🙈

I am guilty of buying Halloween pajamas for the dgc this year. But I don’t see why they can’t wear them all year round. Well all winter at least.

I read this as ‘for the dog’ and thought you’d really taken it too far.

CormorantStrikesBack · 30/08/2024 17:34

My dog has a pumpkin jumper and also a spider Halloween costume 😁

WalkingonWheels · 30/08/2024 17:35

I'm mostly housebound since I became suddenly disabled and as a huge outdoor person, this has been very difficult to come to terms with. I decorate my house with seasonal bits, which go away and come back out the next year. None of it is "plastic tat".

Autumnal bedding has been around for years. Again, I have a couple of sets that come out in September and are put away in November, then they come out year after year.

I enjoy my seasonal bedding and decor. I don't smoke, drink, eat out, buy stuff like clothes, makeup, get my hair done etc. My surroundings are what has to make me happy, so I have things around me I like to look at. It's not harming anyone else, so why the sneering?

SunshineonLeaves · 30/08/2024 17:35

I don’t buy throwaway tat but I love my collection of Autumn bits and bobs and other things for Spring etc - candles, cushions and so on. I get them out each year like you would Xmas decorations. It makes me happy to celebrate the different seasons, let’s face it life is hard enough at times.

ChipsCheeseAndGravey · 30/08/2024 17:39

I’ve actually just got two sets of Halloween bedding for my household, one is pretty seasonal but the other is just black with ghosts on. We are probably a bit of a weird household but for us this stuff tends to stay out all year round. My mother feels the same as you about it and thinks it’s silly, but I guess you’re just not the target demographic. I also find Halloween is prime time to get Christmas presents for my goth niece. I admit that it is mostly tacky tat, but I am admittedly a tacky person. One woman’s tat is another’s treasure.

RunSlowTalkFast · 30/08/2024 17:40

K0OLA1D · 30/08/2024 17:04

None of my Halloween stuff is plastic.

That's very selfish of you. How are people going to get their daily dose of feeling superior to people on mumsnet if you won't buy plastic tat?!

There are people on this very site who have said they do.

SummerSplashing · 30/08/2024 17:43

@RunSlowTalkFast

i don't have a link, I just googled Christmas (2024) advent calendar & they were there!

(2024) because I wanted this years lego ones

Butteredtoast55 · 30/08/2024 17:42

They actually say they throw a duvet set in the bin after a year? Or they sell it on, take it to a charity shop etc? I'd be far too cheap to throw away something I could get a few quid for!

minimadgirl · 30/08/2024 17:47

Got to love a bit of Halloween bedding, when else would our Gothy household get our bedding?
My daughter alternates between her Halloween Bluey bedding and her Grinch throw. Mostly as she's 4 and doesn't have a clue that themed bedding is just for certain times of year apparently.

Pretty sure my Halloween sausage dog duvet gets put on through out the year.

It's only tat if you use it once and chuck it.

SummerSplashing · 30/08/2024 17:48

Geosmin · 30/08/2024 17:01

Indeed.

I was a child in the 50s-60s. At school, we did autumn paintings and took in conkers, acorns, seed heads and coloured leaves for the nature table. At home, I used to make an "autumn box" with stuff collected from the hedgerows.

Now it's fake leaves, garlands and candles shipped in from China...

@Geosmin

it doesn't have to be one or the other!

I no longer have the inclination to make and appliqué /embroider my own duvet covers, but I love my collection of leaves/conkers etc

mo fake leaves or garlands here!

I've seen the error of my ways. I'm just stripping off my witchy bedding to throw away and buy some more

Boidont · 30/08/2024 17:52

This is the time of year that I’ve saved up for to buy homeware! 😂
