Halloween duvet sets. WTF?

Saw in Home Bargains today. Took no notice of sizes or prices.

This is worse than Xmas bedding and cushions.

I think having themed bedding is pointless and besides you want a Xmas free room to chill out

We live in a consumerist society, where vendors have to keep seeking new ways to separate individuals from their money.

Yes, and plenty of individuals are only too happy to oblige. I buy good quality items, and they last for years. That is how I live, but I understand that Society is set up, and geared towards us spending money, to keep the wheel turning, no matter the damage to individuals, or the Planet.

It's so wasteful! It's even worse than Christmas bedding because at least you can use Christmas ones for 6 weeks or so

You can use them any time

Pineappleprep · 30/08/2024 16:35

I have Halloween bedding, so do both my kids. They also have autumn bedding/decorations, Halloween decorations, Christmas bedding and their own Christmas trees in their rooms. I absolutely love decorating every room for autumn/Halloween and Christmas. It makes me happy and it's my choice what I spend my money on and how I decorate my home.

You can use whatever bedding you want, whenever you want. There are no rules.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 30/08/2024 16:36

I used to think any sort of ‘seasonal’ bedding was a daft waste of money - until I had little Gdcs coming to stay for Christmas. Now have a Father Christmas duvet set (they share a double) sitting in the airing cupboard and coming out for a few days a year.
I think I’d draw the line at Halloween sets, though.

HÆLTHEPAIN · 30/08/2024 16:37

I’ve got my eye on some ‘autumn’ bedding, though umming and ahhing because I know I don’t need it. I also have a few autumn decorations (candles, leaves, pumpkin ornaments) that we’ve used for years.

We do all have Christmas bedding but we’ve had that for years too, so plenty of wear out of it.

I spend a lot of time in my house and love autumn and winter so I like to have a few nice things that fit the seasons.

virgocatlover · 30/08/2024 16:37

Halloween/autumn homeware has become a big thing over the last few years, especially among gen Z and younger millennials. It's not just Halloween week, the idea is to embrace autumn from 1 September - 30 November (and then Christmas takes over). Many people decorate their homes according to the seasons (which is actually not dissimilar to what our pagan ancestors used to do).

If it makes people happy (and provides a distraction as the days get colder and darker) what's the harm? People decorate their houses for 3-4 weeks over the Christmas period and no one questions it.

MontagueMoo · 30/08/2024 16:38

I don't hate the idea of Halloween bedding but I do find it a bit wasteful and consumerist. It's just another way to get us to buy more things we don't really need and send more stuff to landfill (eventually). I say this as someone who is super into Halloween AND Christmas.

Not really because you could have it for years and there's no rule to say you can't have it out when it's not Halloween.

MontagueMoo · 30/08/2024 16:39

Yes, but our pagan ancestors didn't use excessive amounts of plastic that had been shipped halfway around the globe and made by slaves. This is not the same as a flower wreath or a holly branch.

No, but the idea behind it is the same.

The idea maybe. Nothing wrong with the idea.

But you asked "what's the harm?"

Well that's the harm. The slave labour, the plastic, the unnecessary carbon emissions.

SprigatitoYouAndIKnow · 30/08/2024 16:42

A pumpkin is for life, not just Halloween.

Beginningless · 30/08/2024 16:43

An advert came up for me today of a Halloween advent calendar! Wtf

Needmorelego · 30/08/2024 16:43

@Rory17384949 my daughter is a big Halloween fan so she is now switching her autistic obsessive mind from Summer to Autumn/Halloween. So any Halloween stuff is going to get 2 months of use before being put away until next year (November 1st she will go into Christmas mode).
People have seasonal clothes and things like summer weight/winter weight quilts etc. I like changing with the seasons. I don't want a life where everything is the same all through the 12 months of the year.

ProudScoutMum · 30/08/2024 16:44

Not quite sure why Halloween bedding is any worse than Hello Kitty, WWE, Ben 10 and the various Disney ones in the airing cupboard or the Sugar Skulls set currently on my bed.

They need lots of bedding because they have accidents there are nights when we have changed 3 or sets and I can only wash and dry it so fast, and sometimes they just like it.

We were given some when family members updated their kids bedroom, but usually I just buy it when it's reduced. There is definitely glow in the dark sets somewhere from when they went through a stage of finding that comforting. There is fleece stuff from the old house which was cold. Honestly some of it has been kicking around for the last two decades.

It was all quite useful when the kids wanted to build Dens during lockdown. Although given that I am currently using a set of nursery curtains as a sofa cover because they were the perfect size to do the job, it's probably safe to say I am not good at being tied into specific things for specific times.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 30/08/2024 16:46

We have different duvet covers for each of the 'festivals' throughout the year.
We begin on January 1st with the Feast of the Circumcision of Christ.

I have to admit it's not my favorite set as the pillow cases seem to be too short and consequently the pillow pokes out the end.

Even if it's just used at Halloween it could be used again and again for years. It's not designed to be used once and thrown away.

KerryBlues · 30/08/2024 16:18

The stuff I saw was very much pumpkin based Grin

@notedbiscuits

If YOU need a non Christmas bedroom, then look at how excessive your other rooms are.

I don't need a non Christmas bedroom.

I like Autumn so I have items that I like to use or display for a couple of months before the Christmas bits come out.

Thanks for the Morrison heads up, I don't usually shop there & hadn't considered them for things like that.

I found an Autumn duvet cover I liked in Matalan the other day, but didn't buy it as I've had issues with the dye running with a candy striped duvet cover previously.

must look at home Bargains too, I want a black cat for the lounge window sill.

Flanjango · 30/08/2024 16:48

My son was just disappointed they didn't have single sets. He's very into seasons. He has a collection of Xmas duvet sets and throws. He came home with a throw, door wreath, bug and beetle juice pants. Each to their own 😁

Flanjango · 30/08/2024 16:49

@TwoLeftSocksWithHoles hahahahahaah 🤣

LoobyDoop2 · 30/08/2024 16:23

Well, fortunately we have plenty of easy ways to dispose of endless mountains of disposable crap without any cost or damage to the environment, so I can’t see a problem.

@LoobyDoop2

Disposable crap? A duvet cover, mug, hand towel aren't disposable crap!

flymetoalphacentauri · 30/08/2024 16:52

Consumerism gone mad 🙄
They can never produce enough plastic crap can they?

UtterlyOtterly · 30/08/2024 16:53

misthios I entirely agree.

LouH5 · 30/08/2024 16:53

I love it!

I don’t think it’s wasteful as you can use it year on year, and disagree with the poster who said about only using it for 4 weeks, as last year I bought some lovely pumpkin bedding from Dunelm and I can’t wait to whip it out on 1st September and will easily get two months use from it, before the Christmas bedding comes out in November!

Each to their own, just don’t go down those aisles of you don’t like it! Whereas I have thoroughly enjoyed picking out all my pumpkin spice and halloweeny candles, ready for the season to begin! 🍂🎃👻🐈‍⬛🍁
