To think we should all boycott John Lewis until they respect their female employees

This is a letter from a female employee of John Lewis's Cheadle branch. John Lewis told its female employees that they have to share toilets and locker rooms with trans identifying men. The employee says this is having a terrible effect especially on colleagues who have experienced trauma relating to men or who have religious reasons to not want to share a space with someone who is the opposite sex.

Whilst I understand you are upset about this, John Lewis is a major employer and retailer. If they have to close it will be devastating for the retail environment. We've lost debehams. I don't know how long house of Fraser is going to last, bhs - gone.

In which case they shouldn’t be shafting their main customer base - by pandering to those with shafts.

How utterly miserable that so many WOMEN on Mumsnet who would be self-flagellating with barbed wire if John Lewis were discriminating against black people have no issue with this grotesque discrimination against women and girls.

Misogyny really is the oldest and deepest hatred.

You would think religious rights Trump trans rights?

Kath85 · 29/08/2024 18:28

Nope, not bothered by this at all!

Elbone · 29/08/2024 18:28

Yep. Happily.

Have you missed the tribunal case where NHS workers are taking their employer to court for this (illegal) policy?

I think sex based rights are important for women's privacy and safety. Some women have a religious belief that means they don't want to share a space with men, some women have trauma which means they don't want to share a space with men and some women simply do not want to share spaces like toilets and changing rooms with men and they should absolutely have that right.

Just because safe space on religious grounds intersects with the trans issue doesn't now make that right. Women being banned from male spaces in religion is misogyny as well. Having their own safe space comes from that, nothing else.

keeptalkinghappytalk · 29/08/2024 18:30

John Lewis falling victim to absurd American gender ideology that lets men ( married, with willies, etc) claim they are women, dress up as women and enter women s spaces. You re letting a lot of women down here, JL. Don t knowingly undersell us.

GailBlancheViola · 29/08/2024 18:30

I'll join you in your boycott and letter writing OP. I am sick and tired of how women and girls wants and needs are so easily dismissed and disregarded in favour of males.

The fact no female employee was even asked about this and it was just imposed on them says it all about who wields the power and exposes the misogyny and patriarchal control at the heart of this. There is zero respect or consideration for women.

They’re a protected characteristic.

As is sex.

Women are entitled to single sex spaces. Men, whatever they believe they are, are not entitled to access them. That’s the actual law. Stonewall may wish otherwise but it’s only a matter of time before that house of cards falls.

Chersfrozenface · 29/08/2024 18:30

At least 5 years ago JL said customers should use whichever changing room they feel comfortable with.

So men can use the women's changing rooms, meaning that I, a woman, don't feel comfortable with them.

JL doesn't cater for me so I don't shop there.

When two groups shave opposing wants:

  1. women having access to female-only spaces

  2. men having access to female-only spaces

What makes group one so easy to dismiss and group two so easy to prioritise?

Missmarple87 · 29/08/2024 18:32

The number of women on this thread who DGAF about the safety and dignity of other women just because they don't know them?! Who needs the patriarchy when you have women like that, eh?

It's going to be an interesting battle when it happens, and I think it it will happen eventually as the Muslims I know are very against mixed sex spaces and particularly by deception.

You could even say making all your facilities mixed sex without informing anyone is pretty Islamophobic (and discriminating against other religions too). Especially since having clearly labeled third spaces would be so easy and would accommodate everyone (well except those for whom the point is to get access to unconsenting women and children but as we know this never happens).

SophiaJ8 · 29/08/2024 18:33

I already boycott them as they use Royal Mail for deliveries and they’re never left, but happy to additionally boycott for this too

MinnieMountain · 29/08/2024 18:33

I’d boycott them if they hadn’t already shut our local store.

DF would be homeless if it wasn't for John Lewis. He worked for them for 20yrs and they have been amazing.

That was then and this is now. Your DF wouldn't have been working with men with fetishes. Well he may have, but they wouldn't have taken them to work. I am sure he would be horrified to think of men intruding in to women's spaces and exposing themselves.

I will continue to shop at JL...those female employees are strong and capable and don't need my support to fight for themselves. I have my own drum to bang.

ResisterOfTwaddleRex · 29/08/2024 18:37

There's an AGP in our local John Lewis (he works in the women's department and is very vocal about it) and I stopped using them once I realised that the James Esses account of their ideological capture wasn't just in one store, or one part of the company:

AGP for those unfamiliar:

This letter does not surprise me. Women deserve much better than this. We certainly don't deserve to be treated with contempt by our employers or as customers.

Loggialy · 29/08/2024 18:39

The Resigner raises interesting points regarding the situation. It does seem like a situation which is designed to appease ONE employee.
Really, a better boycott would have been for her to decide to wear a man costume to work every day. Saying she is a man, maybe with clown makeup because that’s her ID. Use mens changing room and toilet, demand a tampon machine, etc etc. Just act like a person who needs special accommodations and see if she is accommodated.

It's interesting that the woman who wrote that letter has just resigned from John Lewis (she says she is financially secure) the fact is that women who need their jobs often feel they can't speak out on this issue for fear of being sacked.
