To think we should all boycott John Lewis until they respect their female employees

This is a letter from a female employee of John Lewis's Cheadle branch. John Lewis told its female employees that they have to share toilets and locker rooms with trans identifying men. The employee says this is having a terrible effect especially on colleagues who have experienced trauma relating to men or who have religious reasons to not want to share a space with someone who is the opposite sex.

Why would i care who John lewis lets into which toilet?

That isn't a question for us is it - only you decide what you care about. What an odd comment.

CoffeeCakeAndALattePlease · 29/08/2024 18:41

Well, JL is an employee owned trust isn’t it and so their employees should be involved in key issues.

Suzuki70 · 29/08/2024 18:42

I've never been provided with a changing room in any of my retail jobs in the first place, let alone a single sex one. What's it for?

AsYouWiiiiiiiiiiiiish · 29/08/2024 18:43

I didn't know we get comments deleted for gender critical thoughts these days... it's a pity that MN is censoring concerned women.

BiggerBoat1 · 29/08/2024 18:43

You do you, but I will not be boycotting them.
Up to the staff to take it up with their union if they don’t like it.

ilovesooty · 29/08/2024 18:44

saraclara · 29/08/2024 17:29

No. This is their employees' issue (and their unions?) to fight.

I agree.

Viviennemary · 29/08/2024 18:44

No I won't be blocking John Lewis. Its up to the employers amd staff to sort this out, What a fuss about nothing. It's toilets with presumably private cubicles. I bought quite a lot from JL in the past but not so much now. I tend to go on a spree once in a few years.

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 29/08/2024 18:44

John Lewis has great breastfeeding facilities (better than most other shops) so I see them as a supporter of women. I will not be boycotting.

KurtShirty · 29/08/2024 18:45

No

Whilst I understand you are upset about this, John Lewis is a major employer and retailer. If they have to close it will be devastating for the retail environment. We've lost debehams. I don't know how long house of Fraser is going to last, bhs - gone.

Which is why they need to get their act together, and respect and consider female staff and customers.

otnot · 29/08/2024 18:47

Already boycotting them for dreadful customer service so can't help. It's annoying as many of the companies I would boycott for their attitudes to women, I'm already boycotting for something else.

You don’t know what a changing room is for?

Do you genuinely think that was my question?

ItsAShame2 · 29/08/2024 18:49

I am a huge John Lewis fan - but I will also be boycotting them and just sent them this - I used the contact page and clicked the product button as could not see a better option.

”I am a huge advocate of choice - live and let live - as long as no one is hurting each other.

I feel very strongly that not proving safe spaces to biological women is hurting them. I am a huge John Lewis fan and have been for decades - but I will not be shopping in your store or online until you ensure your biological women staff have guaranteed safe spaces.”

To be fair the op actually said locker room. That to me is different to a changing room and not something I would expect to be single sex . At my work the lockers are just in communal places on the open plan floor. It maybe I have misunderstood what a locker room is

Would fit right in Afghanistan with that attitude! Completely fine with women being excluded from public spaces - exactly like the Taliban.

To be honest, I have been boycotting JL already and closed my account with them. There is nothing that I cannot buy elsewhere and their customer service is not what it was. I believe that they are deliberately gaslighting women, there is some form of misogyny running rampant today that I cannot understand. Yet thousands of years ago, archaic and primitive religions worshipped.... goddesses! Can we go back to the Stone Age, please?

Dumbledoreslemonsherbets · 29/08/2024 18:53

The last time I was in jl the toilets were labeled women and men. No information that they were all mixed sex. That's consumer fraud. It's like saying a sandwich is nut free whilst in fact having nuts in.

I think there's a case coming up on these lines for a gym? It's one thing if the change in policy is clear and everyone understands, toilets clearly labeled mixed sex, it's another if you lie and don't give customers a choice whether to consent to using mixed sex toilets or not when it's a critical issue for them.

Thanks for that. I've done the same.

Thank you! The resignation letter mentions locker rooms which most retail jobs have, a literal room with lockers, but the letter starts talking about "female changing rooms". I've worked in a few companies with uniform and never been provided with a changing room. Everyone just arrived at PC World for example in their attractive lavender shirt. Is it a locker room, or a changing room?

This thread is specifically about how they treat their partners (not employees as I've previously said) Do you have any thoughts about the points raised in the letter I linked to or can you not be bothered to read it?

The rules about trans women in loos apply equally to partners and customers, and this is true in all high street retailers.

I read it. It all boils down to “exclude trans women from women’s loos,” without straightforwardly coming out and saying it.

Perhaps if you could link to a neutral source which explains the subtext of this letter, it might help.

But most shops don’t guarantee gender specific toilets. They put signs on saying who they are for but the don’t police it and check people going in and out. What do you expect them to do have a bodyguard on the door.

Lovelyview · 29/08/2024 17:33

I think we should support other women when they fight for their rights in any way we can and often that might be choosing where to spend our money.

Agreed.
But don't just boycott.
Tell them why you're not spending your money there.

LadyKenya · 29/08/2024 18:57

WomensRightsRenegade · 29/08/2024 18:23

In which case they shouldn’t be shafting their main customer base - by pandering to those with shafts.

How utterly miserable that so many WOMEN on Mumsnet who would be self-flagellating with barbed wire if John Lewis were discriminating against black people have no issue with this grotesque discrimination against women and girls.

Misogyny really is the oldest and deepest hatred.

Really? Do you think that this policy would not have any impact on some black women, and girls too, or are they somehow other to you? You should think before you write such nonsense.
