To think we should all boycott John Lewis until they respect their female employees

This is a letter from a female employee of John Lewis's Cheadle branch. John Lewis told its female employees that they have to share toilets and locker rooms with trans identifying men. The employee says this is having a terrible effect especially on colleagues who have experienced trauma relating to men or who have religious reasons to not want to share a space with someone who is the opposite sex.

No. This is their employees' issue (and their unions?) to fight.

I think we should support other women when they fight for their rights in any way we can and often that might be choosing where to spend our money.

DF would be homeless if it wasn't for John Lewis. He worked for them for 20yrs and they have been amazing.

HelloMiss · 29/08/2024 17:38

You crack on yourself then op.....

skippy67 · 29/08/2024 17:39

I like John Lewis, so no thanks.

Well yes, I am not going to buy anything from them in the future obviously.

I wonder if this may soon apply to the toilets used by female customers?

I think you'll find it already does. And any changing rooms.

Radiatorvalves · 29/08/2024 17:42

No. Where I work we have some men’s, sme women’s and some mixed loos. No one here (large employer) has issues with this. Even if they did I do not think I’d be starting an online petition to boycott the employer.

LikeWeUsedToBe · 29/08/2024 17:42

Ugh. The boycott list is getting long. I will boycott them. I feel strongly about women's rights and dignity

Me too but gutted as I love JL!

Screamingabdabz · 29/08/2024 17:43

Wow. Abhorrent treatment of female employees. No respect or consideration.

I was in a big JL store at the weekend and it was tumbleweed in some of the departments so I think a fair few customers have already voted with their feet for their own reasons. I buy quite a bit at JL and this will definitely influence my purchasing in future.

EarthlyNightshade · 29/08/2024 17:44

Love John Lewis, what a shame.
But yes, I'll be going elsewhere until they sort this out.

It's worth writing to them to tell them why. Especially if you have a John Lewis cardm

It's so kind and inclusive innit, making a lot of women feel uncomfortable. I'm with you OP. To be fair John Lewis and their customer service has been on the decline for years so it's no big loss.

dayswithaY · 29/08/2024 17:44

Presumably the same rules apply to Waitrose staff.

Whatifthisisit · 29/08/2024 17:46

I’m with you OP.

Judellie · 29/08/2024 17:47

I already boycott them as they allow dogs in.

IDontHateRainbows · 29/08/2024 17:51

This is my local store. I don't care enough to stop shopping there. Maybe if I felt uncomfortable in the changing rooms, although they are always well (wo) manned with staff.

What, like guide dogs for the blind or other disabilities?

Sidebeforeself · 29/08/2024 17:52

The writing on is on the wall for this company anyway..might survive online but I think we’ll see all stores close in the next few years.

Abitofalark · 29/08/2024 17:52

John Lewis is a disgrace. And to think it's chaired by a woman! She's soon to be leaving, though. All credit to the employee / partner for her passion and commitment in speaking out and protesting on behalf of women.

Boomer55 · 29/08/2024 17:52

This is a dispute between employees/union and JL. Not my fight.🤷‍♀️

Whilst I understand you are upset about this, John Lewis is a major employer and retailer. If they have to close it will be devastating for the retail environment. We've lost debehams. I don't know how long house of Fraser is going to last, bhs - gone.
